He wasn't the sole antagonist in Avengers, The story was about Thanos' agenda, not Loki's. In THIS movie he totally overshadowed the supposed villains in the dark elves. They could have been better, but Loki just stole the show. (Even moreso in Ragnarok) They just made Loki TOO awesome.

After I saw Infinity war and Endgame, I finally understood the Aether in this movie, It was the Reality stone all along and the reason why it looked like slime, was because it has the ability to mess with reality, which explains all the cool stuff it does. I would also like to see in Marvel's What If show on Disney+, a version of Dark World, where Thor and The dark elves failed and Jane became evil with the Aether.

All three ranging from disappointing to misunderstood to controversial. I remember historically people liked thor the dark world a lot when it came out specifically movie reviewers on KZbin like John campea. But then winter soldier came out and it became clear what was dope and what was just okay. That being said I actually love man of steel and Ironman 3 and all the Loki thor team up in Thor the dark world. But yeah people liked this one when it came out largely because people were dissatisfied with the twist in ironman 3. Also in terms of what comic book content dominated that year it was probably Arrow rofl oh boy do times change. Later the same year agents of shield becomes incredibly lit. There is so much to unpack with just the year 2013.
