This is probably the first "real" action scene in this season and it's depicted as what it exactly is: pointless atrociticies with no purpose whatsoever. It's not enjoyable, it's not "cool", it's more reminiscent of a horror scene. Even though we should be rightfully mad at these bullies, that doesn't make the moment any less horrifying.

It's worth noting that in the value system of their culture Thorgil hasn't done anything wrong here. There was serious fighting breaking out between warriors, so of course one side ended up dead, and what preceded was a duel over an insult. We see a ton of that happening before that, and you'll note that most of the time you'll have bystanders watching and cheering with no consequences if one party dies. That's why he knew immediately that they'd been set up when they attempted to arrest him and his families; While technically illegal, as he said this law so far only really existed on paper with nobody bothering to enforce it. So what's being shown here is not Thorgil specifically doing anything wrong (again, he was acting exactly like someone of his status ought to behave), what's wrong is the entire value system that normalises this behaviour of glorifying might and violence and downplaying the significance of life. --- As to Thorkell, if he's still alive chances are he's still in england. He's not part of Canute's personal entourage. --- One thing I think a lot of people miss at this point is how big of a moment this is for Olmar. Up to this point he's had fantasies of violence. This is the first time he's really confronted with the reality of it.

Thorkell will destroy him mate, Thorgil just had weaker opponents. Wulf called Thorgil a good subordinate so I'm guessing they are similar in skill. I'm sure that Askeladd and prime Thorfinn could comfortably take care of both Wulf and Thorgil as well.
@vince7520 Жыл бұрын
@@nischay4760Thorgill is basically a weaker Thors. Same physical structure, same fighting’s style and they use Thors theme for Thorgill later in the season. It’s a good parallel, Snake is a Askellad who find that humanity isn’t only disgusting and Thorgill is a Thors who never understand what a true warrior is. Thorfinn never meet Thorgill too. It’s very complicated to make a hierarchy but Thorgill is definitely on the same level as Askellad, even stronger.

19:12 The song is "Somewhere Else", I believe. It kicks in right as the line "Why did you allow Olmar to win?" is voiced. Then the guard reveals the truth. This is the pivotal point in the Farmland arc where shit hits the fan and a chain of events that affects many begins. But more specifically for the scene, the music, I think, is reflecting what Ketil is feeling. He was set up and betrayed by his king. His wild, foolish sons unintentionally gave Canute an excuse to destroy him. He and his family are now criminals. Everything he's worked for is going to be taken away. Ketil's world is collapsing before his eyes. I think the song represents Ketil's devastation as the scheme is revealed and the inescapable reality sinks in. It also is a moment for Olmar, who realizes he's been manipulated and used against his father.

Seriously the only person in all of that bloodshed that was in the right was Thorgil, he lived by a code of honour and responsibility. If Olmar had run Thorgil would've killed him for that insult to him and his family. Yeah it was brutal, yeah it was violent and yeah he enjoyed it, but he was not the bad guy in any of this. Canute was. He sacrificed a member of his own guard to have an excuse to seize the land of a person who was already loyal to him, who would've given more if asked, it scares me how painful the point is being here on how disconnected we are from the world they live in. Thorgil was prepared to be killed in battle for defending his family's name and reputation and people shouldn't look on that as a bad thing.

Thorgil doesn't care about protecting his family. If he does care, he should've stopped Olmar and let everything pass through. Thorgil even encouraged his young brother to attack despite knowing that his brother will never win and will die. Thorgil knew that his young brother would die and yet he still encouraged him to attack. He even seriously threatened his younger brother. Pure evil. He interfered not to protect his brother but to satisfy his bloodlust and allow the "bigger play" to continue when he realized that someone helped Olmar win.

I don’t mean too much offense but AOT doesn’t have an original thought in the whole show. Every aspect of it is “borrowed” from much greater stories with a few shock moments that mostly fall flat. The author at least tried to come up with something interesting at the end but it is just ruined by the fact that it doesn’t fall in line with what he stole from greater writers.
