One of the oldest shoe companies in the United States, Thorogood is based in Wisconsin and is both employee owned and union operated.
Their moc toe is probably their best known boot, so what makes it so special?
** FIRST GLANCE **
A classic moccasin toe design is offset by an American flag, Thorogood branding, and a whole lot of stitching along the side of the boot. It’s not exactly subtle, but this isn’t really meant to be a dressy boot.
In fact, unlike a lot of other boots that claim to be work boots, these are boots that actually can be used as work boots. Although there’s no steel cap toe the sole is flexible, water resistant, grippy, and insulated against electric shock (to a degree), plus the leather doesn’t require much care.
** LEATHER **
This is full grain oil tanned leather. When compared to your normal veg tanned or chrome tanned leather, oil tanned is a bit more moist, water resistant, and easy to take care of.
Thorogood couldn’t give me any more details about the tanning process - some companies take veg tanned leather and then tan it with castor oil, pine oil, even fish oil.
Now, the leather isn’t incredibly good quality. It’s a little thin, there’s some loose grain, it wrinkled pretty quickly. But for this price, I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
COMPARE WITH THOROGOOD’S DODGEVILLE BOOT: • Is Thorogood's 1892 Do...
** LEATHER CARE **
Use KG’s Boot Guard on the toe if you want to protect it against scrapes and bumps. For general conditioning, Thorogood recommends KG’s Xtreme All Purpose Leather Guard.
** SOLE **
It used to be Christ Vibram but today this is made from Thorogood’s own polyurethane, which they estimate as being 25 percent longer lasting. The company also notes that they can withstand up to 18,000 volts. Some folks say the durability comes with sacrificing some softness and that the newer soles can be harder on folks with joint issues if they’re standing in them all day. I didn’t experience this myself.
After the polyurethane there’s a rubber midsole, some cork, a fiberglass shank, and a poron insole, all of which make for a very lightweight boot.
There’s also a Goodyear welt, which means the boots can be easily resoled and it means they’re pretty water resistant as well.
COMPARE WITH RED WING’S MOC TOE: • Review: Red Wing Moc T...
**FIT & SIZING **
Available in B, D, and EE widths, I found these boots to run a half size large. I’m an 11.5 in boots that fit true to size but the 11 fit me just right.
There was no break in and they’re really comfortable boots: lightweight, good arch support, and excellent shock absorption.
** PRICE **
$175 - $195 a pair. That’s very reasonably priced, especially given these are Goodyear welted boots with a shank and full grain leather.
** THE VERDICT **
PROS
• Reasonably priced
• Lightweight
• Leather doesn’t require much care
• Durable, grippy sole
• Functional as a work boot
CONS
• Leather aged sort of fast, but it’s fine for the price
• No steel toe
• Kind of showy
• Hard to dress up
• Not insulated

I bought a pair recently after a lot of reviews, including your own, so thanks for that. They are incredibly comfortable right out of the box, need very little break- in, and I chose them because of the harder crepe sole, mixed with the soft poron footbed and the insert, as I have worn out knees. I have worn them non- stop since buying them which is also a plus. I am a work boot fan as a rule and grew up wearing these types of boots as a small kid, when there were the boot type of the land. glad to see they have made a come back as the go to boots again, due to their ability to resole them. Highly recommend them both for actual workboot- required jobs and casual.

I've had my Thorogood Moc Toes for almost 2 years now. They were my first pair of American made boots. I got fed up with the poor quality of Clarks. Love them to death. They're comfortable, good quality, and reasonably priced ($180 shipped). The soles are great as well. 2 years now and still going strong. Great review as always!

I've had mine for 2 plus years now and have beat them up with constant wear. They look great and I don't have any foot fatigue from wearing them for hours on end. After I bought this pair and started wearing them, I went out and bought a second pair when they went on sale. Haven't even taken them out of the box yet because the first pair is holding up really well. Thanks for putting up all the videos that you do.

First day in 814-4600. Took my girl Christmas shopping and I was amazed how comfortable they are. The only part that was a little uncomfortable was the heel is a bit stiff at first. Highly recommended these great boots. Thanks for the review. Now to find a watch strap to match.

Didn't realize they where "stylish".... Whatever... I've been wearing Thorogood boots for about 10 years now... My 4600's are my latest pair... They are pretty much the same as these boots but are waterproof... been wearing them for close to a year now every day at work and they are awesome... If you actually use them for hard work I highly recommend them... Cut the flag off if it bothers you but if you work hard in them like I do you won't even recognize it after a few months... Keep them clean and use Obenauf's for cleaning and conditioning... I expect my pair to last a few years of hard use... Your mileage may vary...

Hi Nick, would you like to do a video on how you got into boots? I started with Nike Hiking 🥾 shoes, into Timberlands and when I saw my first Red Wings I was mesmerised. I knew immediately then I’m a boot guy. Also, really like the outdoor shots here, especially with the nature and greens, I know they’re work boots, but leather boots in a nature setting is 👌🏻. Good job with the video Nick!

Thank you @Stridewise for doing this review. I have been looking for a pair of work boots and was wondering about these thorogoods. I also know that redwing has their 1907's which are also moc toe. Which would you recommend for construction?

go with thorogood save the 100 bucks off the redwing heritage boots and furthermore save your feet, heels, pinky toes and ankles from Redwing Rub. The 1907s are modeled after a mid 30shunting bootre extremely narrow and long. Check out some thorogood 814s before pulling the trigger on the redwings. I do believe you'll be much happier with no blisters on your ankles and your pinky toes not rubbed raw. Thoroggods are 180 bucks shipped from midwestboots.com

I had the boot stretched twice and after hitting it with mink oil it was wearable. now the pair is super comfortable. btw, I've read reviews of others complaining one boot was too tight. gotta say when I called Thorogood they weren't too helpful. still I love the boots and would buy them again but if fit isn't perfect I would return them for another pair.

Bought my pair in 2013 when they were still around 130 USD. Got me through four Buffalo winters, and I still use the same pair occasionally when I shovel snow now that i'm back in Brooklyn. Wholly recommend them, and I think they look more beautiful after oiled up with mink oil. I actually enjoy the American tag, although that may be due to some jingoistic bone in my body.

I bought an 8.5 non-moc version and it was painful, especially near the first eyelet where the stitching comes together. Returned. (This is a multi edited reply, after reading-reading initial comment I made, I felt it was confusing). First, I work in construction, grew up on a large cattle ranch in New Mexico and I am also a retired Airline Pilot and Flight Instructor. Leather boots, work boots and dress military, work military, and dress civilian leather shoes have been an important part of my life. Good quality shoes that are well maintained can last generations. Case in point we had saddles on the ranch that were over 100 years old and are still in use with other ranchers today. Leather that is maintained and occasionally repaired is a lifetime material. I have owned several pairs of Thorogood boots. I’m actually trying to purchase 2 more pair as a replacement and a “worksite” dress as I comment but my size is evidently popular and sold out everywhere. Quality. I completely agree with the review video. So much depends on how you use the product on how it will perform long term. But with a little care, these boots will last your lifetime. I’d say they are about as good as this price point and style gets. The oil tanned leather is very easy to keep. NOTE, each pair will vary due to differences in the leather from the individual animal it came from....... there is a big difference between male and female hides, less so between a female and steer. My boots, over the years, have had very noticeable variances in the leather grain and how it wrinkles or doesn’t wrinkle. The shoe companies do their best standardize the hides but it’s impossible to have quality leather not have some internal variation in structure orientation. Preferences: I prefer the black wedge sole version for heavier work, it’s easier to keep clean, however, it is only offered in a wedge on a couple of boots. I prefer the white with the light oil tanned and black leather for less demanding use.... for dressier times ie meeting with a client, finalizing contracts, going to meet with potential clients at their homes or job sites ). It’s sometimes difficult for tradesmen to understand but appearances do matter. As far as maintenance, I prefer non darkening neatsfoot oil (once every couple of months depending on usage....) and I use a tan colored wax about once a week, you don’t have to but I can keep the boots looking almost better than new by doing this..... the partially clear tan wax will slightly darken the boot over time and creates a rich sort of patina. (If you really want to add some depth, use a dark brown every month or two to add some rich tones. I get about a year out of the sole in hard work, same for laces. I get about 5 years out of the uppers. Could get the uppers to last indefinitely if I were to have the stitching repaired but prefer just to replace once the stitches begin to wear out on the shoe body. Why wax? It fills in deep scratches. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t hurt leather to become soaked with water. But it’s important to dry them thoroughly before wearing them again. You’ll be able to tell when they need a neatsfoot oil treatment by the looks and feel. When I see the leather on and around the soul chaffing, I apply the oil. If I haven’t worn a pair for months, I only apply the oil if it appears to have dried out. Great review and I hope my experiences may be useful.

I Love the Flag and the Logo.....Both of which, 90% of people will Never notice. Neither is a reason to not buy a pair of Good boots. The sizing is weird though. I will clarify that with, my Left foot is about a half a shoe size bigger then my right, compounded with have a steel plate and screws for an ankle on that same foot. The screws protrude some also. It is from a 30 year old accident, but it is still very sensitive, when something rubs on it. When I bought mine I tried a 8-1/2 D which felt too tight, and a 8-1/2 EE which felt way too loose. Ended up buying the 8-1/2D. I have to lace them loose at the top, but they still hurt some. Still to tight on my left little toe, so I am going to have to get them stretched some. The right one however feels like I'm wearing a cloud, LOL. I bought a pair of Red Wing Irish setters a week later, and they really run large. I got them in a 8D, No rubs anywhere except on the ankle at the same spot. In Doc Martens I wear my regular 9. Shoe sizes are all over the place anymore. I don't know how anyone ever orders online without first trying them out..Then again, of course, I see a lot of brand new shoes for sale, because "I ordered the wrong size", lol.....
