He really is Van The Man. It's hard to think of another singer who has the knack for knockout horn sections, horn arrangements. The horns come in and they just pump this song up, and they keep pumping as the trumpet and tenor sax make it swing. You should give a listen to "Domino."

Never stayed in and just hang at the house, no we were out and about all the time. no personal phones, no internet, no cable tv for a lot of us. but we had cars and stayed out until we had to go home. we went skating, bowling, band practice, movies, out to eat etc. Always up to something.

Please remember and take into account that Van grew up in Dublin listening to his traditional music AND to USA 50s 60s urban doo wop street singers. In this song he's painting that kind of urban ethnic picture, translated to a kind of late 60s early 70s Woodstock, NY context. Just look at the album cover. And listen to Van, "sheee's/you're as sweeeet as Tupelo honey, sweet as honey, Baby, from the bee..."

I didn't really get to know this song until I was in college in the '80s, when I started exploring Morrison's music. This quickly became one of my favorite songs of his. That journey began with my getting to know "Domino", which would be a good choice for your next song by him. That's one of his most popular songs. One that's more of a favorite by people who are really into Van is the Astral Weeks version of "Madame George", which is a more challenging song, but very much worth the effort. I hope you eventually hear both songs.

Saw him live in 3 decades, 70s, 80s, 90s. Saw him perform this live 1974, which he said “gonna play an oldie”, this was considered an oldie by then. This came out in 71😳 Mellencamps version doesn’t even come close to being as good as this, the original. The bass line in this is killer. By 1974 his catalogue was larger than Mellencamps entire output for his whole career. Van is still on tour. Great little vampy song by Van “Cleaning Windows” is autobiographical from his days in the 50s Belfast Ireland 🇮🇪.. he was learning the music craft.

Typical Saturday night out in the Seventies in Northern England started at 7 PM in the Social Club for a few beers and dancing until it closed at 11:30. Then out for a late night Chinese until about 12:30 when it was time to hit the late night club for a performance by any number of touring rock bands, all the famous names, and late night disco till about 4 AM. Often times I spent my taxi money on a nightcap and walked the 2 miles home. Wild Nights indeed. ✌️

Just finished watching a couple of your old videos reacting to Whitesnake. You both had forgotten about "Still of the Night". Jay, your reaction to Adrian Vandenberg using a violin bow during the guitar solo was that of astonishment and you wanted to know who he was. A little about Whitesnake. They are a Supergroup composed of artists from other famous bands. The line-up for that particular album was David Coverdale - vocals (former singer of Deep Purple), Tommy Aldridge - drums (also played for Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers Band, Ozzy amongst others), Rudy Sarzo - bass (was in Quiet Riot and many other bands to include Ozzy), Vivian Campbell - lead guitar (was in Dio and other bands. He now is in Def Leppard after replacing Steve Clark in 1992 after he passed away), Adrian Vandenberg - guitar (had his own band called Vandenberg). Vandenberg was originally approached to join Whitesnake in the early 1980s, having impressed David Coverdale with not only his guitar skills, but also with his songwriting talent and his ability as a band leader. He initially declined, due to the success of his own band Vandenberg and their Top 40 hit, "Burning Heart." By 1986, however, with pressure from the record company to become more and more commercial and their success hitting a plateau, he relented and finally disbanded Vandenberg, agreeing to join Coverdale in Whitesnake. Initially he was hired as a session musician, helping to complete their eponymous album Whitesnake (known as 1987 in Europe) after a mass-firing of the original band members by Coverdale. He contributed the solo to their No. 1 hit "Here I Go Again," but guitarist John Sykes (Thin Lizzy and earlier Whitesnake) played all of the other lead and rhythm guitar on the album. The scene in the video for "Still of the Night' in which Vandenberg uses the violin bow on his guitar was nothing but showing off for fans. Unfortunately, it was fake playing in the video. Although said feat has been and can be done (Jimmy Page), the sound of the violin or cello, whatever strings are in that song, live are done by picking on the guitar as shown in the clip I've sent you along with possible help of a keyboard. Although, in the 1987 MTV Music Video Awards, he is seen using the bow while playing live. Again, he's not really doing it and is just for show. Hope all this info helps some. Thanks for your reactions to some great tunes out there. Stay blessed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqWqiWCVZdmKisU

Hanging out with my buddies at the pool, the ballpark, or just on main street in our small town was some of the best times I remember. We talked about sports and girls and cars. What could get any better than that?

A friend of mine toured Europe with Van, I think around 2008 (not sure I recall the exact year, I may be way off). Van released a country record and my friend, Sarah Jory, played steel guitar for him.

You know early Springsteen and the E Street Band were picking up on Van the Man. Tenth Ave. Freeze Out has the same horn harmonics.

You have to do the 1960s group The Buckinghams. The five members grew up together on the north side of Chicago. In 1967, for 2 weeks, their song, "Kind of a Drag" was the number 1 song in the US. Their musical arranger created the horn sound copied by other Chicago groups like Earth, Wind and Fire, The Ides of March, and Chicago. Ironically, they didn't have a horn section and added it to the group.

John Melloncamp covered this song with Me'Shell Ndegeocello. The video was about a female cab driver . . . played by Cindy Crawford. . . how awesome is that.

I first heard this sung by John Mellencamp and Meshell Ndegeocello (sorry if the spelling is wrong I copied it from wikipedia) and thought it was cool. Then I heard Van Morrison's version and it is HOT! Also Amber you raise a good point about the scenes painted by the lyrics. I sometimes think if my parents were like that in the 70s before they got married.

My grandpa Rusty was a truck driver, and wasn't too much of an affectionate man. We had a thing where he would always buy me White Castle for my birthday. (YUM! And if you know, don't judge me! lol) But he used to play this song a lot in his truck! I also remember hearing for the first time in his car, Stand By Me by Ben E King! OH! AND, check out the version of this song by John Mellencamp and Me'Shell Ndegeocello! Really makes you wanna dance!
