Thought Process of Bringing Two Toddlers to Hawaii
AMazon list of items I bought or thought of buying: www.amazon.com/shop/heyshayla...
As parents we over analyze ALL of our decisions around travel. How can we make this the MOST enjoyable experience EVER?! Well first, we need to change our mindset and let that go lol
Do we fly direct or do a layover? Do we take advantage of a "lap baby" where we don't' have to pay for our (not quite 2 year old)'s seat? Do I schedule the flight during nap time or do a red eye? What gadgets do I need? Do we bring a stroller? Where do we check the carseat? Airbnb or Hotel?
Welcome to my stream of consciousness as I navigate all of these questions as I prepare for our trip to Hawaii with Two Toddlers!

I heard from a friend that taking kiddos shoes off will help them not kick the seat since it hurts them more than with shoes on. Haven’t tried it with my little one but worth keeping in mind

Love your videos, first and foremost! We actually went to HI with our toddler last year for a month from the midwest also and the only thing I regret about travel is NOT keeping my stroller for the airport(s). Our connector got delayed by like 8+ hours and I had no where for my little to comfortably take a nap that wasn't strapped in my Tula. She took the nap finally but it's so much extra stress than just being able to give them a space that's familiar to chill out in especially if things take an unexpected turn. Once there she was a total champ - as always, its always easier got west than coming back east, that time change coming back home was the bear I didn't think about. Oh and totally get the mini van, for surfboards/umbrellas/cooler for picnics all the things, we were SO glad to have it! Have a great time!

We travelled home to the UK from Thailand last year with our then 18month old. I dreaded it. It's a 24 hour journey door to door. It was so much easier than I expected! He slept most of the time as we chose night flights, for that reason. He loved running around in the airport. My husband and I took it in turns to chase around after him. We set up a nest during our layovers with our snacks, toys and drinks. Expecting to do it all again this summer!

I traveled alone in October with two kids ages 3.4 and 1.2 (nothing fun like Hawaii, just wanted to get them out of the middle east) and then traveled back with them in December. I brought some coloring books and workbooks for my oldest, the "water coloring" book for my youngest, some stuffed animals, and most importantly: an entire bag just for snacks. Seriously. Bottles for my youngest so he could have milk if he wanted, boxed juice, boxed milk/ chocolate milk (plant based so i wouldn't have to worry about anything getting spoiled), raisin boxes, fruit squeezies, veggie chips. You name it - anything that was shelf stable and safe for both of them to consume, i brought. They didn't finish all the snacks obviously, but i was happy to have enough on hand so that i could keep them both happy for the whole trip (two flights with an overnight layover layover). Also, one change of clothing for every 3-4 hours. Seems nuts, but I used almost all of them! Also we chose two favorite books to bring along which read to them on the plane and while we waited👌🏻

We flew from Australia to US when my son was 8 weeks old, when he was a very mobile 11 month old and 12 month old. Traveling with a newborn is really easy cause they are just an extension of you and don’t really have a circadian rhythm yet anyway. I was super nervous about the 14 hour continuous flight, plus connecting flights in Aus and the US making a 30+ hour travel day when he was 11-12 months old because he was super mobile but too young to really understand what was going on or the concept of sitting still. It was totally fine though, you reach your destination eventually, you recover from the lack of sleep and jet lag after a few days and the memories/time with my family was so worth it. I’d do it a million times over.

We cloth diaper too, and I also have horrible allergies to things in most conventional laundry detergents, but my laundry and travel savior is laundry detergent sheets! I use earth breeze brand laundry sheets, and you can pack SO MUCH LAUNDRY SOAP in a tiny ziplock! And add almost no weight to your bag.

Please do a video when you get back about how everything went. We live in Illinois and have debated taking our four kids, but think it would be a nightmare/not worth the cost.

The car rental place might have car seats you can rent. Traveling to Hawaii in October with my 8 month old so I’ve been looking into that 😊

We’re in the same state! How wild lol 😂 I hope your travels go well ❤stay safe and have fun! It sounds a bit stressful, because of you I got into solo traveling and I still love doing it. I’m currently pregnant and I know I want traveling to be a regular part of their childhood & I’m watching in preparation for a few years from now lol

I don't have kids yet, but I really really want to figure out traveling with them. I want them to have childhood memories of experiencing VERY different worlds from theirs! The vastly different cuisines, cultures, languages, climates, they'll notice all of that! I know it will be really really hard... but I really want to put in the work for their sake. Even if it's not a vacation at ALL for me. You're such an inspiration, Shayla!

Loved hearing about this! I currently have zero interest in going travelling with my 20 month old. Staying close to home where our daycare/ family is for the 3 days of support a week, and where everything is setup for us trumps everything at the moment.

We just got back from my baby moon in Hawaii and took our very rambunctious 2 year old. It was a success so we (crazy or not) are likely planning to take both our boys next year at 3.5 and 1 years old. He loved the blow up toddler seat extender and napped for almost 2 hours on both flights. He more so leaned back against the corner of the window seat with a neck pillow behind him, rather than lying totally on the blowup. It depends on the airline whether they allow them or not but we had no problem with Alaska Airlines - we just checked with a crew member after boarding. Just a heads up that it’ll have to be set up in the window seat so it’s not blocking any other seats. I also sneak diapers, wipes and floaties in the car seat bag! 😅 We also brought a baby beach tent which comes in handy especially in Hawaii as not all beaches have shady areas. That went into the car seat case too.

We are from the Midwest, too, and are in Hawaii with our three kids as I type this. (We stopped at your very nice Minneapolis airport.) Our kids are 18, 15, and 13. Prior to this, we would always rent a house in Florida. Now that our kids are older, we started doing more adventurous trips. (Last year, we took them to Turks & Caicos.) I commend you for taking on such a huge endeavor being pregnant and having young kids. Enjoy your time with them, but it does get so much better as they get older. Also, Hawaii (as I’m sure you know) is super nice!

If your car seats are lost, your airline *should* have free rentals, then they drop yours off when it's found and pick up the rental simultaneously.

Hey I think some airlines only allow small (umbrella) strollers so you may only be able to bring 2 umbrella strollers unless you pay to have it as a checked item.

One (comforting?) tip, once youre there youll just go into adrenaline mode and even if it gets hard youll just push trough it. There is no going back once youre on the plane anyway 😂 thats what i tell myself everytime i fly with my baby/toddler. In may im flying for the first time alone with baby and toddler, and im terrified. Send help 😂

We bought the Cosco car seats to take to Hawaii and ended up checking them (it’s just too long to be contained and comfortable). But it was nice they were light and we took a mom clip and attached them to our backpacks to carry through the airport. I love our double umbrella stroller but I’ve seen all kinds of strollers checked at the gate. Especially if you go through LAX or SEA - they are too big imo without a stroller. We also hang our bags on our stroller handles with mom clips or whatever. Bring all the snacks, more than you need. I forgot baby powder to get sand off and I was regretful when we had to get back into the rental car. Unless you are going to like Oahu, you will want a jeep. Sometimes Costco has good rental deals but they are so $$ these days it seems. Blue Dolphin Charters was great with kids if you’re going to Kauai. You’re going to have the best time! My oldest was almost 3 when we went and talks about it all the time.
