Why urinal ice? Well... 1) It can decrease odor because it's cold and the volatile compounds are less volatile when cold and because cold air sinks into the urinal. 2) It works as an autoflush - diluting the urine and letting it drain away more effectively. 3) It's cool to watch ice melt, so it encourages better aiming. 4) Random angles mean less splashback... all who have worn shorts while using a urinal know the horrors of splashback.

I guess my only question now is, how often would you have to replace the ice?
@ghuegel

Kyler Thatch Maybe once every few hours? With an ice machine, it shouldn't be a problem.

ghuegel It could also be automated by measuring the weight of the tray, and if it gets below a certain point, more ice is automatically dispensed (when it detects no one is using it that is, having ice randomly drop down in front of you while you pee could be... disconcerting...)

I like to think that Hank was in NY (a place famous for things to do and see), and he spent a large % of time making that face. Katherine: "Hank, I'm sorry honey, but we really have to get going to the movie premiere. You can make that face again when we get home..."

Katherine only needed one thing to take her from really pretty to totally beautiful, and that was to offer up a line like "I feel like there's a bead of sweat rolling down my back -- headed for my butt crack."

As a musician, I can totally connect with the whole "hidden systems" thing. Sure, when my amazingly talented friends perform at recitals and on concerts, it's beautiful. But it's even more beautiful when you see and hear them practicing for hours a day trying to make every single nuance perfect. When I hear them absolutely nail a technical passage that they've spent a lot of time on, I'm more than happy for them. I'm proud of them. I think that when you see the work that goes into something, you appreciate it more. And that's why I loved the TFIOS movie.

Your point about seeing inside of things and understanding how they work adding to their beauty struck a chord with me. I'm a music theorist, and sometimes people wonder why I would be interested in analyzing music. They think it would detract from the experience. It absolutely does not. It adds so, so much to be able to understand why something is powerful, not just to feel that it is powerful.

Sometimes it does take away from the experience. For me it is very obvious when I play games. Once I started creating my own maps and understood that everything in games (especially shooters) is based on invisible boxes that trigger once you run through them, it took away alot of the immersion. Once you understand the technology behind it, the magic is gone.
@nadiact-ie5hy

RemizZ Interesting point. To talk about creating music, practicing and performing by yourself or with your friends also adds more (in my opinion). Particularly when performing with other people, there's a joy and a sense of connectivity in creation that I've never experienced doing anything else. While I'm very critical of my work, there's also a great sense of pride in putting something together when you know how difficult it was. I don't really seem to view this from the same perspective you do. Perhaps it's because of the mediums in which we work? I'm glad you brought up a different perspective.

Interesting you should say that Hank because in architecture, you'll find (especially in the post modernist sense) the processes and inner workings of a building are actually celebrated. One of the buildings famous for this is the Pompidou Centre in Paris, which shows service ducting and piping outside of the building to celebrate the complexity and beauty that is the processing. Yes, I am an architecture undergrad :P

My friend has a skeleton pocket watch, which means it is a pocket watch that has a clear lens on it so you can see how everything works. I spent a good hour looking at it, and every couple of minutes I would look at a different gear or some other facet and be amazed at it. This thing had so much complexity and wonder in this tiny little space, and all it did was tell the time. Understanding doesn't just enhance beauty, understanding IS beauty.

TFiOS strikes me as a really important movie, but more so than that, the vlogbrothers strike me as really important people, who are doing a pretty darn awesome job at increasing world awesomeness. More than anything I love that you both have so much love for what you do. You've made nerding out, beyond the constraints of textbooks or pseudo-intellectual conversations with pseudo-intelligent people, just a really cool fun thing to do. Thank you for all the years of the vlogbrothers empire you've brought to the world :') I'm very proud to call myself a nerdfighter x)

Beauty lies in knowledge, magic lies in the unknown. Many tech companies, especially Apple (following with the example in the video) try to create a sense of magic when using their products by enclosing something completely and removing simply things like screw holes and I think in this case it often works; in terms of awesome user experience, but it reduces the number of people who have knowledge of a system. If you can see how it works you will have a greater understanding and appreciation for the design and become more educated as a result - and then one can actually begin to understand the beauty in the design. In my opinion, designers need to think carefully about their responsibility to educating their users and but at the same time providing the optimum user experience - as that is what they're paid for.
@danheidel
@danheidel 10 жыл бұрын
This is why I don't buy Apple products. They make excellent hardware and software but they are extremely hostile to people having the ability to use and modify the hardware they have purchased. Also, their policies with regard to constantly changing charging adapters, screws, etc are horribly environmentally wasteful.
@rlamacraft
@rlamacraft 10 жыл бұрын
They're no more hostile than most of the industry now, they just laid the road that all tech companies are now walking. As for cables and stuff; most people will get new cables with every new device anyway so I've never seen the argument people make there. I'm not advocating for Apple nor against, however. I think an important balance between beauty and magic is needed to provide the best user experience whilst also giving the user an insight into the workings of their magical metal boxes. Too often designers want to provide a magical experience (as Hank said with escalators) and so they forget about giving the user the opportunity to awe at the often stunning design beneath.
@danheidel
@danheidel 10 жыл бұрын
Robert Lamacraft I would have to disagree with Apple not being worse than average. Having worked in hardware, it's pretty clear that they design their products to be actively hostile to an end user that want to do things like replace a battery or fix a broken jack. Every Android phone I have ever owned or seen at least uses standard screws and fasteners and are mostly pretty good about using standard USB and audio connectors. The hardware industry was actually moving towards a more open and inclusive attitude and Apple has, IMO set that back a long way. Also, let's not forget Apples use of open source software as the basis for their operating system which they never reciprocally contributed back to the community for. There are certainly other crappy hardware companies out there and Apple is not the worst by a long way. However, they, more than anyone else, push the walled garden philosophy to their products. There are certainly positive aspects to that approach but it's not one that I agree with. Treating your customers as passive consumers of a pre-packaged experience and actively fighting the ones who want to customize the hardware they now own is not something i want to reward with my business.

TFIOS (no spoilers...but a really cool thing) Brilliantly written and beautifully adapted. Absolutely loved it. I saw it at the Night Before Our Stars screening. I had this crazy double moment happening for me. I am a 47yr old woman. I sat on a row next to 8 pre-teen girls. Every scene with Augustus elicited a collective swoon. I couldn't help but laugh and smile. As moving and touching and overwhelming as the movie was, right next to me was youth and dreams and all the hope in the world. Young girls dreaming to one day be as adored by a boy so wonderful. My heart grew three sizes last night.

I saw the movie this morning. The bad thing about going to the reduced-price showing on a Friday morning is that the theater was almost empty. Or maybe that's a good thing. Either way, WOW. Shailene and Ansel were fantastic. Unafraid to be ugly and wholy devoted to imparting John's story. Although I wouldn't say that the movie gave me any more understanding/insight than the book did. The movie was really a companion. A very faithful and well-made companion, but a companion nonetheless.

I definitely feel that beautiful things are more beautiful when we understand the complex systems behind them, or maybe our understanding of things deepens our experience with those beautiful things... for instance, i know a lot of people who really love TFiOS, but they're not nerdfighters. They just read a great book and liked it. But for me, and much of nerdfighteria, reading TFiOS means more to us and is more beautiful to us because we watched as John talked about writing it, saw how his ideas about life carried over into the novel, and understand how his experiences with Esther informed the writing of the book. Our experience with the beautiful thing is richer, in a sense. Maybe?
@Kyasakoamy
@Kyasakoamy 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I like this. It's not that the beautiful things can't be enjoyed without an understanding of the things behind them, but in some ways seeing all the thought and effort and even flaws that they are made up of deepens the experience, because it seems more true somehow.

I saw the movie at the 9 pm showing the night before, it was terrible. Not the movie itself, that was a solid 7/10, but seeing it with so many people is a definite negative. It didn't help that I was sitting directly in front of a group of 12-14 year old girls who had never heard of whispering, or silent sobbing. They couldn't have been more annoying if they tried. I'll definitely have to redbox this to see if it gets better when not surrounded by loud strangers.

I read this, then the comments below. I don't think I had to be there to understand how annoying those girls were. I remember a ton of Tumblr girls at my school screaming about how awesome this book was and how awesome the movie was going to be. I'll be honest, that kind of deterred me from watching it and enjoying the book as much (although, let's be honest, it was pretentious as all hell).

djyofu72 To a certain extent I feel like pretentiousness just comes with the territory a lot of times. Many intelligent people like to use lots of fancy words and sentence structures, not to sound fancy, but to get more subtle meanings across. It comes off as pretentious, and in some cases doesn't work out in favor of certain characters that you're trying to portray, but it just kind of _happens_ I guess. This is coming from a super pretentious acolyte, and I've learned to accept that I just can't help it. Being pretentious on purpose with other people that are doing the same can be a hell of a good time, though that's beside the point... or maybe behind it, I dunno.

That's a really good point- the containment of complexity. It's been ingrained into me since a child; as a young pianist, I was told to make my playing sound effortless. And yes, there's a point to that, but somehow, that idea has spread to parts of my life that shouldn't be hidden. And you reminded me that I should show my complex nature- that I shouldn't be ashamed of it.

As a dancer, too, we are told that are dancing should seem easy. Although this makes sense in the context of storytelling via movement, I, too, have seen it spread into unwelcome parts of my life. I do however try to be complex not because its important for people to see me as vulnerable but because its important to me that they don't see me as plastic. Hank reminds me why I should want transparency, and why I find it so fascinating.

However, I just finished my first John Green book, Paper Towns, and it was so much better than I was expecting that I'm going to have to read the book first. The movie may be awesome, but I want my first time to be with John. That sounded odd. LOL

I can really recommend Looking for Alaska and, yes, TFIOS. I'm personally not a big fan of Abundance of Katherines and Paper Towns, because to me, they feel like inbetween-books. Don't get me wrong, they were not bad, but sometimes you get books that feel like the author wrote them for the sake of writing anything instead of because he had an inherent need to tell that particular story.

I truthfully liked An Abundance of Katherines. It's definitely very different from his other books and might not be everyone's cup of tea. I definitely say you should read it because independent of whether you like it or not, there's a lot to be learned from it.

I'm reading a book by Richard P. Feynman, and you talking about the complexity behind beauty reminded me of a quote from this book: "I have a friend who's an artist and he's sometimes taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say, 'Look how beautiful it is,' and I'll agree, I think. And he says-'you see, I as an artist can see how beautiful this is, but you as a scientist, oh, take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing.'"

I'm also reading "surely you're joking, Mr Feynman". I'm reading it really slow, since Feynman is my greatest Idol (a big reason for my motivation to keep studying physics) and it makes me sad to realise he's dead. The book is great!

Sexy scientist It is a lot, I totally feel your financial pain, but you have to remember that people have families to feed at DFTBA and so really $22 is actually a quite respectable price. Also, John Green is the author of the book, and so he has a right to sell merchandise that is derivative of his own book, the art of which (such as these t-shirt designs) was already being distributed and sold well before the movie. Maybe you could make your own t-shirt, as long as you don't sell it to others I *think* that is okay? (Okay.) DFTBA :)

WARNING: TFIOS SPOILERS Okay, so I was watching TFIOS with my friend, and it was awesome, and then the very last line came up: "Okay, Hazel?" "Okay." So I started screaming and singing Undigested Lump (no... not really... I exaggerated) because that left a terrible last impression of what otherwise was an exceedingly faithful adaptation. The last line is "I do, Augustus. I do." French The Llama, they couldn't get something that important right? Oh wells. Still was awesome.

WARNING: CONTINUED SPOILERAGE I felt similarly at the time, but now that I really think about it, it may have been a side effect of dy... er, a side effect of the translation to the screenplay format. I mean, with books, you take things at your own pace, and (depending on the author's style) you're encouraged to take your time and process what you've read. You get to take the time to think about the implication of using the words "I do". A film is usually more of a visceral "sit back and let the feels wash over you" experience, which encourages something with more immediate impact. Particularly for people that haven't read the book and/or just didn't know it was a thing (and let's be honest, these people exist), I think that the exchange of okays was the choice that would better resonate with the audience, because they already recognize the significance of those words from the previous scenes.

Everybody in the theater cried when I went to see TFIOS, including my 23 year-old brother. I cried for about the last 15 minutes. XD It was very accurate to the book, almost verbatim from how I remember it. For all the people bemoaning the fact that Nerdfighteria may change due to the new fans, I say this: TFIOS is unlike any teenage romance these teenagers have ever read. It's bleak and beautiful and very down to earth. If anything, it's going to inspire them to think about mortality and their role in society. Be glad for them that they've discovered such an awesome thing. Don't begrudge new fans their feels. They might decide to stay around and talk about science and economy with you. They might just change the world. :)

I'm mainly hesitant to see the film because there's a good chance that it will be cheesy and cliche-ridden that it would destroy one of my favourite books. TFiOS had a rather generic plot but was made great by extensive dialogues and monologues scattered throughout, each of them filled with subtext, wit and dry humour. I don't see that being well translated into a movie. But hey, I could be wrong, and I hope I am.

This is my fear as well. I normally get bored with plots that are too romance-driven but the book was so much more than just a love story, it actually made me think about things and I'm not sure if the movie format is as good a medium for that as the book. Still, John says that he is very happy with the way the movie turned out so I would like to give it a chance. If the movie turns out not to have the elements that I liked so much in the book, I can always re-read the book and enjoy it all over again.

For me, understanding the processes that we have been shown through these videos of you and John from the moments where the book was in the process of being constructed to the final moments before the movie was released, it makes the finished product (book and movie) so much more rewarding, even as a fan. I honestly started crying when I saw the trailer because yes, it was so amazing as a fan of the book to see that become a thing, but also because we've seen you both talk about this so much for the past few years, we knew where it came from, and I remember thinking, "Damn, he must be so happy and proud." Understanding origins and processes is important to me, it makes the finished product so much more rewarding.

As a person who is involved in the hidden complexities of art (I am a stage manager and occasional SFX makeup artist), I find that knowing what went into the beautiful thing to make the thing happen deepens my connection with the thing, allowing me to contextualize it more fully. This makes truly beautiful art all the more beautiful, and makes sub-par art very apparently sub-par. I take it as a win.

Going to see it today, and I must say, I'm super excited! I'm so proud and happy for everything having to do with it and the green brothers and the actors and everything and it's just so awesome! We definitely have not forgotten to be awesome lately, and neither have you Hank. You're still awesome even if you don't say things right in front of the camera, you say it right here, in front of this camera.

I love the type of pocket watch that has a window in the back so you can see the gears. The sight of a watch face is something I can take for granted, but the clockwork that actually makes a clockwork clock work is still a wonder to behold!

PrimevalDragon Wait, seriously? Were you that excited to see white asparagus in the Fault in Our Stars? Does knowing that white asparagus does not make an appearance make you less able to enjoy the film?

No I just was kinda upset because it related to her being a vegetarian and it was just so meaningful and just cut completely out ( at least they never mentioned it)

***** No, I'm not that excited about white asparagus. I really loved the book and I know that movie adaptations tend to not be 100% like the book, so I wanted to figure out the differences on my own. I'm not angry, and my life will go on just fine. I just tend to be anti-spoiler. Didn't mean to sound pretentious or anything, it's just a thing of mine. River Koritko Fair enough. I totally understand that reason.

River Koritko *Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen it yet* They cut far more important things out of the movie - for instance, Augustus's dead girlfriend, or the swing set thing. Hazel was a vegetarian in the books so that she could say that one line about how she wanted to minimize the suffering/death she caused in the world (an important facet of her character). It's not in the same context, but I recall her saying that line (or something very similar) to Gus at some point.

I liked the book but didn't find it as emotional, amazing & inspiring as everyone else seems to have. I still enjoyed it and will see the film, I just don't really get the hype (no offence to anyone. Personal taste.)

You know what? That's okay if you didn't like the book. :) That's the joy of books, they are like people in that you don't have to enjoy every single one you meet. That's not a fair expectation. DFTBA my friend. :)

I can understand that. My mum did not enjoy the book. I liked it (I even cried quite a bit), but 1. the hype can set your expectations much too high, leaving you disapointed and 2. John is a good writer, but he definitely has his flaws (as every writer, or rather, every human being does) and not everyone will like/understand/enjoy the thinks he writes. I personally prefer his KZbin videos to every one of his books, even though I liked TFIOS as well as Looking for Alaska.

And this is why I love Nerdfighters. A person says they didn't like something, and everyone is okay with it. No one attacks anyone. No one is a jerk or sarcastic. People are politely supportive. I have yet to find this in other places on KZbin.

I was in NYC 2 weeks ago, and I remember walking by central park and seeing the "permanent installation for TFiOS". I definitely took pictures and was really excited... then realized it wasn't actually for TFiOS. Oh well.

I absolutely adore Hank and Katherine's relationship. It's just so sweet and adorable and beautiful. I love how they still appreciate each other and see each other as beautiful and stuff like that. It's such a great relationship, and I love how you see them arguing like normal people during video games. Hooray for complex relationships.
