A person uses the knife they have with them in an emergency . A very high percentage of people--probably vast majority--will be carrying folders. Emergencies, thankfully, don't happen often, but when they do, you want to be as prepared as possible. So I don't want a knife with a second grade locking system when the absolute best system is available at a very reasonable price. Therefore I have stopped carrying folders that don't feature the Tri-Ad locking system. Thanks for a great video.

I’ve heard more than one CRK fan cry that the Sebenza in the Cold Steel test must have been altered. Bullshit. Why would CS even entertain a notion of doing such a thing? Every frame lock maker can have a knife fail by hanging forty five pounds off the blade. I’ve owned a few CRK’s and Cold Steels. Each maker has their pros & cons. An undeniable pro of the CS triad lock is strength.

Every survival expert will tell you the best survival knife is the one you have on you.. If everyone that ended up in a life or death survival situation knew their day would end up like that when they walked out the door that morning and had a liner lock, a frame lock, and a Triad Lock to chose from every single one would have packed out a Lawman, or a Recon, or a Finn Wolf, or a Voyager XL. Most days i carry a Hold Out II, sometimes its one of my other CS AUS8 Triad folders.. Some days its my Spyderco Manix II XL.. I have had both liner and frame locks fail on me.. Im an outdoorsman, hiker, camper, mountain biker, hunter, fisherman, surfer, and motorcyclist.. I want the strongest folder i can get for the weight im going to carry and i dont want to cry if it gets lost or confiscated.. I lost a 125.00 Benchmade Leopard at the beach back when that was a shitload of money to me.. Actually its still a lot of money when you consider its the cost of an assembled AR Lower from PSA.. The second was a 140 dollar Spyderco Millie confiscated by Homeland Security on a trip to the Statue of Liberty of all places.. I have two of my Hold Out II's and both were bought like new on ebay for under 25 dollars and the one i carry almost everyday locks up like the day i got it, its razor sharp and easy to keep that way because its easy to sharpen AUS8, and it got ran over in my driveway while working on a truck and the only damage was some deep scratches in the pocket clip that ive now come to love. Its going on four years and i would put it up against any 500 dollar strider with the same blade length any day of the week. If none of you own a Recon XL clip blade or the Voyager XL clip you do not know what your missing... Its literally a folding Kabar, same length when open, better handle shape, and probably stronger since the stick tangs on those knives are notoriously weak links in the design. It's as bomb proof as folding knives get.. I would put either up against any folder at any price point.

Demko probably don't want others to use the Tri Ad Lock because they may do something wrong and screw up its reputation with a small design error of some type. He would likely need to approve the knife and design to make sure everything is done correctly.

My opinion is it's your money, buy whatever you want. It's nice to have choices but its also nice to know what these knives can do and if they live up to the hype or not. Obviously we now know that if you require a hard use folder a Sebenza is a pretty poor choice.

I love my Triad Lock Cold Steel knives and for extreme hard use there are few equals.. But i also very much like my Manix II XL and have a lot of confidence in the ball lock.. I sold off all of my remaining BM axis locks save my 940 and only because it has sentimental value to me..
@jimboethefirst74186 жыл бұрын
Its understandable how come knife enthusiast feel they must defend fram ,liner, compression, axses and other locks because of the nice knife style that can be designed with them ,but once one fails when in uses ,,then fancy looks and high priced materials well not matter no more,,just how reliable is the locking device on the folder. And on a knife with good steel that fails,,it will only cut worst.
@jimboethefirst74186 жыл бұрын
We all know that a knife can be used for years and years with out strong locks,,but that takes awareness of that factor like for instance a slip joint knife as long as you are aware that its slip a joint knife you will be careful with it in uses,even as a defense knife if necessary you will be careful,,the Tri Ad Lock takes those worries away.
@huejanus55058 жыл бұрын
I agree with all your points on your video, BUT........If you look at several of the testing videos, the sebenza would have lost to almost all the framelock and linerlock knives. The lowly leek would have crushed it in head to head testing. I just want to know why it did so badly for arguably the best machined knife out there. Some will say it needs a breaking in period to get better, but that goes for all the other knives in these videos.

@meatblade34908 жыл бұрын
No one buys a Sebenza to hang weight off the back of it or use it in a way that requires torque on the knife like that. It isn't advertised that way from CRK as far as I'm aware and isn't designed that way at all. Have never had mine close on me through a week of processing thousands of boxes of product, a few dozen zip-ties and endless plastic wrap and tape. It's possibly the only knife I've seen them test where it simply didn't make sense to subject it to their tests. You can tell from the video that Demko really didn't want to. Spine-whacking and weight hanging a Sebenza is like taking a stock 911 offroading - it might make around the first corner, but you'll be out every dollar you spent fairly quick.

Check out some of solo's other videos. He opens a cold steel knife to explain and demonstrate the triad lock. It's probably just a burr or the spring lever slipped a little. The lock slips into a slot on the blade with pressure from a levered spring. Quite easy to fart around with.

Pocket lint is a problem for lockbacks. If that’s your friends problem, a toothpick or blast of air should get rid of the obstruction. Tri Ad is actually designed to compensate for wear based in the locking surface angles. Send it in for warranty. The usual failure points are loose screws, stripped screws, and worn out pivot washers.

The Sebenza is a fine knife. It's overpriced compared to a top of the line ZT or Spyderco. CRK made top of the line stuff... 30 years ago. Unfortunately they've basically sat on their ass for most of that time and haven't innovated anything since the frame lock. Besides resorting to magical thinking and saying it "feels" a certain way, you can't tell me a Sebenza is "better" than a Liong Mah Remedy. Reminds me of when 10-15 years ago the BMW 3-Series was considered an unbeatable driving machine. Until the B7 Audi A4 or G35 came along and did everything a 330i did for $10,000 less. Finally Car and Driver and Motortrend outright awarded an entry level sedan comparison test to something not from Bavaria.

and can't deny aesthetic value. That minimalist look, simple looking mechanism [I'm sure it was anything but simple to invent & perfect -- using the handle materials own shape memory, stored energy to engage rather than a spring, etc].

If you don't expect to use your pocket knife to chop down trees or de-bone a moose, to me it doesn't seem like a major selling point that your knife could do that without breaking. My knife breaks down a few boxes, opens letters, whittles sticks, and might be used for some food prep when I'm camping. Do I "need" a high-end tactical folder? No, but I like them. and, in an emergency, a good knife might save my life. A discussion of relative lock strength is kind of irrelevant when, in any quality knife, what's there is so far beyond what you'll ever need.

I think that if anyone looks at a sebenza for ultimate lock strength, they have completely missed the point of the sebenza in the first place. You pay for a sebenza for its fit and finish and EXTREME quality control, tight tolerances, and clearances. You buy a tri-ad lock cold steel because they have the best strenght to weight ratios of any folding knife without quesion hands down. (and what amazing value for your money as well... from both companies)
@huejanus55058 жыл бұрын
It's not that someone looks at a sebenza for ultimate lock strength, but for all it's qc and tight tolerances and $, it should perform better than all $30 to 50 frame locks. Which it didn't. It faired about the worst of all of them. I just want to know exactly why this happened. For $400+ I expect more than just a brand name.
@braidyfisher8 жыл бұрын
You are paying for extremely tight tolerancing and precision of machining and hand finishing, NOT for strength, as i have already stated. Watch theapostleps crk vs. sebenza video. He will explain what i am saying better than i can. ✊
@huejanus55058 жыл бұрын
+Braidy Fisher I kind of figured I wasn't paying for strength, as it did the worst of all the knives tested. As for hand finishing, I am wondering why there are so many videos out about how to smooth and polish your washer so the knife opens and closes better/ smoother. I also wonder why there are so many sebenza videos talking about a break in period of 6 months to a year for a knife that is machined to the highest standards of any (.0005"). I watched a video by jbdavis88 (I think), a sebenza lover, where he did a cut test with a cold steel versus his sebenza. A cut test that Chris advertised the knife as being able to do. The cold steel aus8 passed, the sebenza's s35v deformed. I'm not any knife producers fanboy, I just like good value for my money and am a little sceptical of paying $400. plus for a sebenzas..
@braidyfisher8 жыл бұрын
Michael Demers , You dont have to buy one then man, value is in the eye of its beholder. I carry and use my sebenza 21 just about every day, its my favorite knife. I still have all of my fingers and cant really complain about the edge retention/toughness. ( And You know... from about 600 bc up until about 55 years ago, folding knives didnt have locks at all, and people were fine with them, as am i)
@huejanus55058 жыл бұрын
+Braidy Fisher I agree about the beholder part. I don't have access to a sebenza around here and would prefer to hold, play, flick one before buying or not. I'm just trying to get objective opinions on them but they're awfully hard to come by. Seems everyone is firmly planted on one side of the fence or the other. Love, like hate is blinding. Just watched a video where a guy complained about the flaws in the finish of his sebenza, about the linerlock creaking on the blade when disengaging and the less than smooth blade deployment. But he goes on to say he'd get another. I bring up points I see in these videos not to be a shit disturber (ok maybe sometimes, but some people deserve it) but to question why. I've always said the sebenza is like the Mona-Lisa, not pretty, kind of a plain Jane, but something about it draws you in.

Don’t take ANY liner lock or frame lock to a theater of operations. Ironic since the most popular combat theater folder is the Emerson, a classic liner lock. BTW I’ve had one lock back fail in every day use (not a Tri Ad).

i think the secondary stop surface has nothing to do with the lockup strength. cold steel has just gotten the lockback right! look at the old school lockbacls from cs, they lockup rock solid, too. the thing is the lockbar just bites really really deep into the tang of the blade, which makes for a solid lockup.

Those frame locks knives are not a new idea, They have dug up Roman spring metal combs, knives and other tools, C shape tongs are often referred to as Roman tongs, And of course Roman scissors etc, But if you pay a lot for a pocket knife what you are paying for and really after is high quality materials and precision build quality, Titanium is two hundred times more expensive than equal size sheet steel, It takes six months from mining the ore in a wet mill to finished bars and sheets, A lot of it is taken for space and aircraft industries only what`s left is for public commercial use, Parts are also often milled from solid pieces rather than cast or stamped out, And then polished where others would not bother and actually honed and sharpened straight from the manufacturer, And that`s often surprises people when they try the knife out for the first time and realise that it`s had just a quick grind to create the bevels, That said, They are working on making titanium in larger amounts by using different methods, And you could say that Opinel make a very strong locking mechanism on a folding knife for little money, And that you will eventually need to sharpen any knife anyway

You can argue all day long that the Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock and a framelock has advantage and disavantages to each other and you would be right but the thing is that the Benchmade Axis lock is better than a liner lock and a framelock at every way possible.
@sputumtube8 жыл бұрын
+PowerMadHeadBanger The weak springs in my 940 failed after just one year of very light (fruit cutting, pencil sharpening etc) use. The excellent Benchmade Lifetime Warranty came to my rescue (I'm in the UK by the way) and the springs have been replaced with much stronger ones free of charge.
@PowerMadHeadBanger8 жыл бұрын
paul greenwood Someone can argue that the omega springs on the Benchmade break and render the folder useless but the difference between an Axis lock and a liner lock\framelock is that the last ones also break\wear off, but when they break\wear off you have to exchange the whole liner\frame to fix it. Now with the Benchmade it's only two tiny omega springs. The Axis lock is much more cost efficient to fix.
@sputumtube8 жыл бұрын
PowerMadHeadBanger Agree with you completely PMHB. Not being a skilled knife person, my best option was the warranty. I liased with a lovely lady at Benchmade called Cate who gave me constant email updates and there were no problems. I'm delighted with my 940 now. My only outlay was £5 for postage. Top result. :)
@sharpdad338 жыл бұрын
There is a test somewhere on KZbin I think by Benchmade themselves where they break the lock after many pounds per pressure. I can't remember if cold steel did a comparison test between both but the axis lock for me is strong enough to make me easily choose it over cold steel any day. I do think for value lock and steel CS for sure has great value now but for some of us it's not always nest bang for the buck. It's nice to have variety.
@sputumtube8 жыл бұрын
TheAidansdaddy17 The Black Class Benchmades are probably as tough as a (folding) knife gets.Have a look at the Contego for example. However, they are really expensive whereas the Cold Steel line are much cheaper (not so much now with CTS XHP of course) and if I were a soldier it'd be the Cold Steel's indestructability that I'd know I could rely on 100%. For civilian use my 940 (and Endura's, Delica's, SOG's and so on) are more than enough. I've seen the Benchmade test you mention and it's impressive. Have a look at Andrew Demko's comparison tests here on KZbin for a more detailed comparison.

I have had lock-back knives fail on me and a friend. My friend almost lost some fingers while carving initials in a tree. Granted these were cheaper, less expensive knives that failed, but they started out with solid lock-up, but over time the friction of metal on metal when opening and closing will cause those locks to weaken, and at the most unexpected moment. One advantage to the frame lock is that your hand is wrapped around the lock-bar and it will hold the bar in place. Something the Cold Steel test didn't account for. Given Cold Steel's reputation for stealing knife designs and other unsavory business practices, I wonder if they didn't manipulate the Sebenza or use a Chinese knockoff during testing. Regardless, there are better knives to own for my money than CS. The Fallkniven A1 is a way better knife than the SRK, and a Buck 110 can do everything a Code 4 can do for a third of the CS price.

I am sick and tired of these "A liner lock\framelock never failed on me", "A liner lock\framelock are strong enough" and "Get a fixed blade" types of arguments. First of all we all know a fixed blade is not so comfortable and discreet to carry as a folding knife so it's not practical saying "Get a fixed blade". Secondly I started EDCing a knife a short time ago and I already experienced two lock failures, if you never experienced a lock failure with a liner\framelock you are probably only using your knives to open letters. Thirdly, we could see in that Cold Steel video that you are referring that the Sebenza was failing by minor hand pressure so don't come with this "A liner lock\framelock are strong enough" bullshit.

TheAidansdaddy17 First of all, your first sentence it's just regurgitating the "Get a fixed blade" type of argument again. I have fixed blades. I like fixed blades but as I am actually carrying my knives there are situations where I do not want to carry a fixed blade. Then what you gonna? Gonna be stuck with an underdeveloped inherently weak liner lock\framelock? No sir, I will get a Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock because I rather have a stiff lock that is strong than a weak lock that's easy to open and close. Secondly, I forgot to address the "We use our knives differently" bullshit. It doesn't matter the task a strong lock it's always needed and good. You said a lot and nothing at the same time.

citygreek1 What was very well said?! He just used old arguments that I heard a million times.

Now YOU make a great video sir! I just subbed! If u get time, check out some of mine?

The tri-ad lock may be the strongest folding lock out there, but for most edc purposes it's just not needed. And let's be honest, cold steel knives are just flat out ugly.

Smithguy50 that’s subjective, some are ugly in my opinion but not all.

I guess my only problem with these videos, that have people spine wacking the hell out of a knife, or cold steel's lock failure testing, is who the hell needs a folder to cut a fucking tree down? Use the right tool for the job. I understand that some knives are made for hard use, but take it to the extreme?

Personal taste, but I wouldn't give a dollar for all those knives. There's nothing as useless as a single blade tactical style pocketknife. Give me a ten dollar box cutter any day.

Sounds like you've found the perfect knife for someone who opens a lot of boxes every day.

Spine wacking is for amateur knife users

I agree, Demko has done a fantastic job with this lock...

Cold Steel or Emerson?
@Grodd705 жыл бұрын
I'd put my money $$ on the Cold Steel. I had an Emerson Commander years ago and loved the ego's, loved the blade but the liner lock was thin and did not instill a lot of confidence.
