I have two Delica 4, one with VG-10, and the other with ZDP-189 steel. Today I sharpened the ZDP 'cause I wasn't satisfied by the Spyderco factory edge. I chose to regrind it to 30° all-inclusive. I did the work using Spyderco Sharpmaker; it took me close to an hour, a bit of stropping, and the result was a shaving sharp knife. I'm delighted.

Nice video solo. I am in love with s110v. Absolutely incredible stuff. My family & I own and operate a large recycling center. Corrugated cardboard is our #1 money maker. I make thousands of cuts a week and 110v holds up better than anything else I've used. Now that my collection is well over 300 different blades, I'm greatful for modern metallurgy. I used to do all my cutting with a freebie gerber knife that my dad gave me when I was 10. The soft steel was easy to sharpen, but that's about it. The blade is about 1/2 it's original size.

Huge spyderco fan here. Thinking about my first zdp blade. Thanks for the real world info. This is the kind of thing i was looking for to help me decide!

Thanks for the information. I was considering the British Racing Green Delica in ZDP, and I think I am going to go for it.

Combo-edge blade really come in handy and I used to buy them more. Many times, the plain edge just would not get the cut started on some things, but the serrations would bite right in. I get some very resilient fibrous weeds in the yard that my weed eater will not get through but the serrations zip right through. I have not tried ZDP-189 yet, but it is on my "buy when the price is right" list.

I'm glad I found this video. I'm a carpenter and a knife collector, and have been researching a new work knife. I don't like using utility knives because it gives me a chance to use my stuff more than the average collector. I normally use my Spyderco Tuff at work but I've been wanting something with a thinner blade, that will have a good enough steel to stand up to the work, so a ZDP sounds like a good match

Let's admit it guys. Most of the knives we have we don't even want to cut tape with.

Tape? Who said anything about said weapons being exposed to air, when out of their glass encasement(s)?!

Hey thanks for the video. I was on the fence about the native 5 in s110v or stretch in zdp. I'm gonna give zdp a try now. Thanks man!

excellent video on very good subject..... I am partial to ZDP as well, terrific steel.

I have to try this steel. Ive been happy with the S30V and I find Spyderco is superb in how it treats all its steels. I noticed a guy who said something about how his ZDP chipped after opening a tuna can with it..who uses a knife to open tuna cans though?
@tralphman4 жыл бұрын
I have never had a single chip on my zdp Endura, I actually plan to cut something with it soon, just building the courage!

I picked up a used ZDP Strech. Looks like the tip had been broken off and reground. But I got it cheap.

I think 110 should have a course edge on it to get the max performance out of it. Think you would see a big difference if you gave those vanadium carbides a little more room

My favorite knife back when I was doing construction for durability, cost effectiveness, and ease of cleaning, was my Boker Subcom in titanium wit ha 440C blade. Used to cut open concrete bags with that all day long and only had to re-sharpen after about a week of that. I'd never use my Lionsteel M390 blade for such things, hahaha. My upcoming Spyderco in ZDP will probably be the same. I just can't stand trashing a nice knife worth more than $50.

ZDP-189 In spydercos are probably 64-65 HRC which for the record is basically the lowest hardness that is considered a "working" hardness for zdp which I find kind of amusing. Damn tough stuff for such a hard alloy.

I like to go the whole hog and go M4. Longest held factory edge ever. I had a chippy Dragonfly 2 which put me off ZDP a bit
@frederickj.71366 жыл бұрын
Try the sprint run Urban Leaf in K390, Pete. I have to believe my own little beast is the super slice-y vanquisher of the Dragonfly ZDP! Mine weighs 54 grams = 1.90 ounces (!), and it has a filled out, four finger grip using the choil.

my Benchmade barrage is 154 cm. I've always used 154 and been happy with its retention. I know 154 is nowhere near as good as this stuff but how much better is the zdp? is it really a "super" steel? thanks for info.

I don't particularly like the ZDP-189 in my Rockstead Higo. Very prone to microchipping. I think I would appreciate it run a little softer.
@CedricAda8 жыл бұрын
They push the rockwell all the way up so its probably pretty prone to that. Kudos on actually using your crazy awesome knife!

Bought a stretch in ZDP189, carved a piece of pine. Microchips It's still sharp though and takes and holds a great edge.

Randy I respect you opinion would you buy zdp189 Dragonfly or frn version of the Chaparral with cts xhp both are about the same money ... Thanks in advance ...
@brewman62184 жыл бұрын
Get the Chap. xhp is way tougher than zdp, and the chap is a tougher higher quality knife.

i have a tiny ZDP delica but since i broke two endura locks i am damn afraid to use it
@frederickj.71366 жыл бұрын
The backlock on the Stretch 2 is a monster. It is very tough and NOT very springy at all; and it releases "late". Not so good for EDC in my view -- my Stretch v.1 lightweight is more user friendly for EDC level tasks -- but I have to think the "2" in ZDP-189 could be the still-lightweight (104 grams = 3.67 ounces, VG-10 version on hand) tough job champ for something with a thinner, very, very slice-y blade.

what's your number 1 edc steel? number 1 tactical " folder steel?
@rekozma8 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the person. I myself like s30v or s35vn steel some will say s90v others will say v10 others yet will go with CTS XHP and so on. With so many choices of blade steels out there now days you can had what you can efford. I say if you have a good sharpening system spend a little money and get a nice super steel. Lay the edge down a bit and enjoy having a great knife that just needs to be maintained. If you don't and you not looking to spend a ton of money but want a good steel that holds a edge and is reliable and easy to sharpen on hand stones. I suggest D2. I find it to be a good steel for that. But this is just one opinion. There's over a million out there and I'm sure quite a few that will say I'm totally wrong.

Ouch, I would say superior but I really like it. Seems to be either love it of hate it steel, I wonder is a few bad batches went out? Honestly I go ZDP for most heavy use projects around the house. Appreciate the honesty!

+SolosKnifeReviews I love your work and your view on serrations but I cut a LOT of cardboard (since 1975) and nothing seems to hold up?
@asleepyinsomnia8 жыл бұрын
+SolosKnifeReviews complete opposite view, I use 440A sharpened at 220grit. this is so if it ever gets dull-ish, I just find the nearest brick for touch ups. plus if you pry and break the tip, 440a is pretty cheap. but.... pretty much going to try your recommendation haha
