Thoughts on the Canon R5 MK II

It’s a great topic, and as you said, the key for everyone is “is it right for me?”. 20 fps vs 30 fps is a big deal in sports, but the point that was left out (or I missed) is that of the sensor. The R5 MKI has a sensor readout speed of 16.3, vs a sensor readout speed of 6.3 on the MK2. This is Huge for sports that struggle with rolling shutter (golf, baseball, etc). With the MK5, there may be only 3 usable frames as rolling shutter makes you ditch them, and the camera is only running (electronic) at 20 gps. With 30 fps and the faster sensor readout speed, not only will you have 30fps, but you also basically eliminated any rolling shutter effect. This is huge. More usable than having an R3 because the MKII has 45 megapixels, and with golf, you’re often back further than you want and need to cleanly crop. Again, that’s “my” argument for ordering mine. Excuse any typos!!

I guess it depends on the sport? I use my R6 MK II for diving, rugby and football. I have not noticed an issue with rolling shutter.

I recently took advantage of Canon's refurb sale and got a refurb R5 for $2,299. I also have the R6 Mark II. I am a wildlife photographer, and the R5 is perfect for me. I was considering getting the Mark II, but for right now, I don't think I see a $2,000 reason to get it.

I managed to get an open box one on Ebay for around $2200. VERY worth it right now. I don't need the mkii. It doesn't do much else for me. The is already great for wildlife. If the mkii had been a higher MP or something, I'd say "maybe". But man, the price disparity between the two right now is great.

Just watching the video - one feature with potentially a big benefit to you is the IBIS wobble. You're vlog style recording now, if this is the R5, is really exhibiting that annoying wobble. Now, they aren't saying it is completely eliminated on the R5 II, but it is significantly better. You also stated you do a lot of 4k120. If so, the 4k120 in the R5 II not only is said to look better (it isn't oversampled from the 8K sensor, but they seem to have made it look better) as well, the 4K120 now can have sound and not have the slow-mo baked-in. So, you can actually watch it play back in 30fps if you choose, then slow it down in post. You may not shoot a lot of stills, but I never use the 20fps on the R5 because the rolling shutter for many use cases just ruins the photos, so rather than risk it I always shoot in the 12fps mechanical shutter mode. With the R5 II, I will now be able to leverage the electronic shutter for 99% of what I shoot and that includes sports. The autofocus improvements are actually going to help portrait photographers too. If you have the subjects moving at all, spinning, etc the autofocus will now do an even better job of locking on and not getting lost in those instances where the eyes can't be located. This applies to street photography and any use case with groups of people. I know it is a small thing, but I am glad they introduced the dedicated photo/video button to switch modes. I often switch back and forth between photo/video and this will make that process 100% easier. Lastly, the codec options are also a huge, but largely overlooked, enhancement! Many people struggle to edit much of the R5 video, especially the 4K/8K high bit rate versions. This offers a bit of relief and aligns the codec terminology with the cinema line modes. Obviously, it is a smaller subset of users that also have the cinema cameras, but I know that is a welcome change for them. I there are other important upgrades as well, for me, but I understand how many people will not necessarily be able to justify the extra money. it also may be in need of a firmware update, I had really bad wobble with my r5 until i realized they put out a camera firmware update that adressed this issue.

I had the R5, and I never realized how much it bubbles when it is handheld with IBIS. But your video bubbles too much. This would be much better with the R5MKII.

Back in 2020 you youtubers were beating the hell out of the r5, now you’re saying is good enough? Hell, an r7 is plenty fine for most people, so isn’t it wise to spend even less? But I do agree that we have reached “Peak Camera” and most of them recently released are more than good enough for most people. However, for me, I really need the improvements in the mark ii over the mark i, so I’m buying it (I’m a wildlife/bird photographer). My mark i will be my backup/landscape/macro camera. Take care.

I'm torn between r5 and r6 mark ii. I will usually use it in Basketball. Still thinkking since r6mii is way better in AF catergory

I have both, the AF in the r6ii has better tracking options but the r5 AF is just about as solid if you're used to it. I'd say the R5 is a significantly better camera overall and if I'm only using one body that's the one every time.
