Lol nice one On a serious note, can you imagine the kind of stuff toshers could find in the sewers? Stuff that could be incriminating for some people would surely find their ways into the sewers and end up in a tosher's hands. Blackmail material. If I were such a person I'd want toshing to be illegal too.
@starrchild7186

@@selinnazsur2328 it was actually because the rich people decided toshing was stealing. They would have rather the valuables were lost forever than allow someone who badly needed the stuff to feed their families have it. I tried that once when I was younger on beach houses on the Gulf of Mexico and honestly between that and digging through shit looking for little valuables for $50 a day I'd seriously consider, and probably take the digging through shit. Seriously it would EASILY hit well over 45C (over 113F) on top of those houses with NO shade until lunch, which is usually 6 hours after starting, then work until dark after an hour break. I worked until lunch telling them I was going to BK for burger. They knew what was up and said, You get paid by the day, half days don't count. I left and said fuck the paycheck and didn't go back. lol I went to trade school and became a mechanic. Later in life I got a job in private security in Iraq and it STILL wasn't as hot a on top of the roof. lol

I remember reading Voltaire's Bastards by John Ralston Saul and he talked about the faites divers, ie. Paris and other French cities pre sewage would pile dung in the middle of the road, cart it off in wagons, throw it in bogs, and the faites divers would dive in those bogs for - as stated at the beginning of these videos - precious metals. It's amazing what kinds of pressure life can put people under based on where they started, I think more people need to familiarize themselves with this before assuming that things sort of just 'work out' if you live right.

In terms of seeing pigs in the sewers, when I worked for a council years ago, one of the painters/repairmen went off sick for months as he'd been cleaning a toilet and had eaten his lunch without washing his hands (I know, it's disgusting and a stupid thing to do). He developed some sort of nasty brain bacteria as a result of the fecal matter and hallucinated all sorts of stuff before almost dying. Wading around in all that human fecal matter probably left a lot of them with brain problems and also it would be interesting to know if working in those conditions for a prolonged period would lead to life shortening problems

I saw a rat the size of a chihuahua in an abandoned camp in the ozarks of Missouri. I saw and shot a rat the size of a cat-a bit smaller maybe-and it had the biggest, most disgusting nest I’ve ever seen. I still remember being awe struck. This was about 4/5 years ago.

“…left ‘ *nothink* ‘, but his bones.” Very interesting, seeing the word spelled that way - thus also PRONOUNCED obviously differently, even if just the last letter…one that changes the pronunciation so LITTLE, that it really just sounds nearly the same when spoken in passing or quickly in conversation. Sometimes, it MAY even sound EXACTLY the same depending on one’s accent & regional dialect &/or local speech patterns. Just find that pretty interesting, as I was unaware this particular word was ever spelled THAT way.

Another interesting discourse on Geogian, Regency and 19th century London. Henry Mathew is worth reading as is Peter Ackroyd’s ‘a Biography of London’ and his book which covers the whole length of this river. Arran, there are a few minor inaccuracies in the video, but they don’t really matter too much, with the exception of your statement that Joseph Bazelgette’s engineering masterpiece took the effluent down river where after some treatment it does indeed flow into the Thames - but certainly NOT upriver! You might also mentioned that the modern introduction of the flushing toilet. played a large part in overloading the old seeers. The embankment also made the river narrower causing a faster flow of the incoming and ebbing tides. Many of the flash floods you mention were a deliberate flushing of the sewers in an attempt to clear accumulation of solids which would build up periodically when/there was the flow of water in n the tributaries and rivers was low, or a osmall obstruction became a virtual blockage as more and mor solid material built up. I doubt toshers would have been issued with timely warnings from the authorities. Interestingly there are people employed to walk through the sewers these days, to check for buildups of solids which I believe aero called ‘fat bergs’r, a more recent phenomenon due largely to the waste from soaps and other materials which we put down our drains.

16:14 I've been there! That river-gate is now about 100 yards away from the river bank and at the edge of a small park. Queen Victoria built a big embankment there in the 1800s. I read all that on an inscription I saw when I was there. It's cool to see it how it was back in the day.

An interesting story, but there's one fairly obvious error. You said at least twice that Bazalgette designed his sewers to empty the waste UPstream. If he had done so, the dumped liquid would have flowed right back down past London again. If you look at the Wikipedia article "London sewerage system", you'll find this: "[Bazalgette] and his colleagues, including William Haywood, designed an extensive underground sewerage system that diverted waste to the Thames Estuary, downstream of the main centre of population."
