I figured this comment would already be on here before I put it. That is exactly why they did it, supposedly. It's funny because they were clever enough to somehow get out of the grave without disturbing the earth, or at least had a way to put it back so it didn't look like it had been disturbed. But they weren't smart enough to just flip themselves over when turned upside down, like they couldn't figure out that they were facing the bottom of the coffin and not the lid. lol

Incidentally, Colorado Springs, Colorado has a dry climate. It's cold in winter, and moderate in summer. It had a major TB sanitorium where they fed people well as they breathed the dry air. My great great grandmother died from tuberculosis at age 36, leaving five kids behind. Her husband died from an accident the year before. None of the kids luckily seems to have caught the TBC from her though - they all lived to old age. Unlucky kids anyhow, losing both parents at such young ages. Oldest one (17) ended up raising her younger siblings, so they were fine in the end. (Edited for spelling.)
@Elora445
@Elora445 3 жыл бұрын
@Red Dwarf Maybe, maybe not. I think it's most likely that my great great grandmother just got healthcare quickly enough (died at the hospital), so none of the kids had any chance of catching the disease, I suppose. Haven't found any signs of the kids catching the disease at least - but, then again, I haven't really been looking. Genealogy is a bit tiresome at times.
@Elora445
@Elora445 3 жыл бұрын
@@worldisyours86 Haven't said anything about genes. But yeah, I'm sure there are many ways TBC can flourish and spread. Not quite how it does (too lazy to look it up), but it sure is a scary thing how many got it and either died or got damaged by it. Horrible disease. Just glad that barely anyone in this particular part of my family/ancestors got it. They were lucky and unlucky at the same time (becoming orphans). I'm also glad that it's rarer (but certainly not gone!) nowadays. Many things seem to flourish in the right circumstances (for an excellent example, see all kinds of mold). Certain houses are therefor really bad for our health. Hopefully, people are, generally, better informed today.

I grew up in western PA. Every morning I'd go to my grandparents house while my parents were at work. My grandfather was always showing me things. He taught me to ride a bike, a skateboard, we built kites together, and he let me help with tools while he worked on his cars. We'd go on long walks sometimes. And one day, when I was around 6, he took me for a walk I'll never forget. We drove about two miles away from the house, to a little side road next to a farm that was built on a hill. On that road, where the farm ended, the rock was exposed. It was a nice flat face. And in that rock face, there was a small hole. That's where my grandfather took me. Holding a flashlight, he lifted me up to the hole and instructed me to climb inside. The hole was just big enough to squeeze through. And what was inside? It looked like a man made catacomb. The rock was smoothed out, and there were small chambers leading left and right. It was extremely tight though, even at six years old I couldn't stand up. But in the main room, shelves were carved into the rock. And on those shelves were human skulls and leg bones. At the time, I thought nothing of it. But I'm 33 now, and I can't help but wonder why my grandfather pushed me in there. Clearly he knew it was there, but what purpose did he have making me go in? We didn't take anything. He simply asked me to tell him what I saw. And after that, we never went back. We never even talked about it. It was just like any other uneventful walk we went on. He never made it seem like it had any significance. He died when I was twelve. And still to this day - I wonder why he took me there.

This is why we put dead bodies through a wood chipper before burial in my town. Sometimes they'll say things like, "I'm not dead yet! Untie me!" - which is kind of scary. Burying someone upside down in the grave was meant to confuse the potential vampire, as they'd have no way of knowing which way was up or down in the coffin.

Except the fact you feel pressure from the gravity and know you're lying face down in the ground, plus you have this hairlike structure near your ear, filled with fluid, helping you with balance, orientation etc. So no matter how they'd place you, you'd know your way up, or those were some seriously stupid vampires (colonists).

Every few years I had to have a tuberculosis test in order to continue teaching. There was always the chance of a positive test. It was strangely worrying 😟 and I was sort of absently stressed until the skin test was read. Never examined my forearm so intently for the couple of days it took. I'd have less to worry if local people weren't in the habit of spitting everywhere. It's also disgusting, and it was my habit to talk with my students about the dangers, etc. I've no idea if it changed anything, but I tried 😅

This reminds me of what had happened two centuries earlier in the Austrian Empire: they sent out doctors to investigate why in the eastern most province (partially present day Romania) peasants died like flies. Since those were dangerous times, they had soldiers accompanying them. They found a fresh corpse with a bloated belly and bloody lips and it started making weird noises (from the gas escaping the corpse). The soldiers freaked out and decapitated it and burnt it causing mass hysteria... And in no small part start the vampire mania!

At 5:00, that reminds me about a book I read during my adolescent years; The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Dalaney. In the book, there exists a profession, a Spook, that deals with the supernatural and one such being was a witch. In order to contain such a being the Spook would bury the witch upside down so if she were to try to come back to the living she would dig further into the Earth. Perhaps that’s why they flipped the dead (as mentioned in the video at 5:00).

@@lamepotato3407 Mass hysteria (and likely rabies). What would happen is someone would fall ill, villagers think it’s spirits, events would occur that managed to make them think a wendigo spirit is involved. Then mass hysteria and panic would ensue. And you gotta remember the person in question is generally very ill and out of it at the moment. The fact that everyone is convinced and constantly screaming about how he has a man eating demon in him is generally enough to make him actually believe he might have a man eating demon in him. And so he behaves as tho there’s a man eating demon in him (hysteria is powerful like that) Combine that with the added aggression and lack of awareness of rabies and you get man eating demon guy.

If a genuine Victorian era house, there may have been dead bodies in your house for up to a week. Turning the body face down was so they would dig deeper into the ground instead of to the surface. Graves with iron cages over them were to contain the occupants and keep them from getting free should they wake up. Wooden stakes for vampires weren't to kill them but to hold them down while their head was removed and buried elsewhere.

As someone whose family came from Southern RI for several generations and was raised in Northen RI, I was raised with the vampire scare as part of our culture heritage. I often think about how my mom's grandfolks and great grandfolks lived through this time in the tiny village in Clayville. I wonder whether they would have genuinely thought it was vampires or just some crazy culty preacher a couple miles away. Seeing this makes me regret not asking Gram about whether her parents her parents ever mentioned the scare before covid hit, though tbh I'm not sure I ever knew her before the memories started to go.
