I feel for Jack Owen. He was outside the venue chilling with the folks in line at a Deicide show. Genuinely seemed like a cool dude. Have to feel he could be doing something better with his time than playing in Six Feet Under.

@@tainted_lord87 FACTS. The only reason I've heard (from one of Karl Sander's interviews) is that they're label mates. Aside from that convenience, I'm just so sad for them....they've been getting shitty tour positions for a while now. I would die for the recent setlist the European fanbase got.

It was fun to see this video please do this again next year! Only ones I disagreed with were Darkest hour and Linkin Park. While I wouldn’t put it in my best I thought the DH was a big step up from migrant flora which I found really bland. Linkin Park I really enjoyed brought me back to the first two albums and I thought the album has a lot of energy and memorable choruses

It really did feel like they tried to tackle every era of their sound in one album but not as well as they'd done it before.

New subscriber here. I really like the way you talk about all the albums and reflect on them from different angles. Plus, you're freaking hilarious! Zeal & Ardor "Greif" was probably my biggest disappointment this year. I really tried to like it but it's just an absolute snoozefest, too subdued and boring. As if they got rid of almost everything that made the previous albums stand out and memorable.

Enjoyed the video, think it is interesting topic, and for me a lot of these albums were very underwhelming, maybe unrealistically high expectations (Gaerea), also think there seems to be a few bands trying to fill the headlining void that seems to be happening across the metal world, and as a result bands are becoming more accessible to a wider audience. As i lay crying, dust bolt, six feet under are all horrendous and happy to never hear again. Cheers!!

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! When it comes down to the disappointing ones I don't think my expectations were that high especially in the case of bands whose previous albums were killer like Gaerea and Darkest Hour. I have no problem with bands broadening their sound but ultimately it comes down to execution. As for the bad ones... yeah, I can't be disappointed if I'm already disappointed the band is still around lol.

Necrotic Nick- I've seen other people give that album high marks but it just didn't click with me. I felt like they leaned on the symphonic element too much and the music underneath just became kinda bland. It was definitely missing the intensity and technical play of their earlier albums. I still love Septic Flesh but I think their music overall shines and the symphonic elements are more of an atmospheric thing to add to the music. They're killer live too if you ever get a chance to see them.

It was your original review of the Motley Crue EP that persuaded me to listen to it, just to see if it was in fact as bad as all that. It was even worse than that. So bad, it makes the Bullet Boys sound as sophisticated as Opeth. I used to quite like Motley back in the day (Feelgood and backwards) - but now they really should just STOP.

Necrotic Nick- Man, I almost feel bad that the review made you want to check out that EP lol. Yeah, there's nothing redeemable about it and I don't think you're far off with the Bullet Boys dig lol. I grew up on a lot of 80's metal and Motley Crue was in the mix for sure but they've aged like milk compared to a lot of 80's bands in my opinion. I'd love for them to announce their retirement (again) but I have a feeling they'll just comeback like a case of musical herpes.

I agree with pretty much all your picks but I've grown to like the Swallow The Sun and God Dethroned albums, especially the second half of that God Dethroned album. As for Swallow The Sun I do hope they get back to more of their older sound on the next one despite liking a lot of the newest. When I listen to the Kerry King album it just makes me wish Slayer were still making music, Jeff had never died, Dave is BFFs with the other 3 and they're still Slaying (bad pun) live. But that's not what From Hell I Rise made me feel, not awful by any means, it was just....there. As for that Anvil album, they should have quit long ago. Their newer albums are all cringe.
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 4 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- If that new Swallow the Sun was under a different banner like a side project I might have less of an issue with it as my expectations would have been a lot different. Who knows if this is just a one off shift for the band but I guess we'll see with the next one. God Dethroned did get better on the second half but not enough to save the album for me. King essentially just branded a lot of Slayer leftovers as new music and you can tell sadly. It's just mid and honestly I doubt people would even talk about it if it didn't have Kerry's name on it. Anvil doesn't know when to quit sadly.

In a sense of the word, nightmares of the decomposed at least had an unintentional entertainment value due to the eeeeeee thing. To me, it always sounded like if eric cartman from south park tried to imitate a death metal frontman. The new one doesn't even have that, it just... exists. But yeah, arguing which SFU record is worse is a pointless ordeal. What I would argue about instead is the new darkest hour record, which I found to be amazing! Great video, as always!
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 4 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Thanks! Yeah, you hit the nail on the head with Nightmares of the Decomposed. It was at least memorable in the sense it was hilarious. This new one, it's just kinda regular bad. Neanderthal offered some laughs but most of it was pretty damn basic and the fact that the internet scared the "EEEEEEE" out of Barnes kinda ruined some of it. For Darkest Hour, coming off of Godless Prophets, I just felt that new one was pretty safe overall. There's still some good songs but it's nowhere near the banger the last one was in my opinion.

The 2 albums of Slayer that are my least favourites, Repentless and Christ Illusion, are Kerry albums. I've decided to pass on it and Category 7, even though I love all the players involved. There are too many thrash artists from the 80s who just need to retire. I don't want these guys up there thrashing away still in 10 years looking like Rob Halford. But every year I'm finding it harder and harder to enjoy newer metal. Everything is so clean and over produced now, it grates on my ears. Hell, even album covers look too clean and over produced now. The only new band that I feel happy for is Bloodywood. They just feel fresh to me.
@thrallsofmetal

Necrotic Nick- I still like Christ Illusion but Repentless was pretty bland in my opinion and I can tell these Kerry songs came from that album. Category 7 had potential given the line up but most of the songs were kinda generic. There's still tons of bands that go for that old school production and even with the art. You just have to keep your ear to the rail. I've heard some Bloodywood and it's interesting in terms of the cultural elements they blend in the music.

Category7 and Kerry King were two albums that I just couldn't get into. Super groups are tricky for sure and as much as people like to glamorize "bands", I think there is something to be said for having a primary songwriter surrounded by role players who can do their part. Songwriting is such a different thing that playing an instrument and this album suffered from no one reigning in the guitar noodles and drums being "overkill" haha. Kerry King was just forgettable in every way. Nothing really stood out enough to make we want to jam this album. Also, maybe I missed it, but did Vomit Forths album Terrified of God not make your top 40? Maybe I just missed it, but that one was fire and probably one of my faves of the year.

Necrotic Nick- I tried with them but at best I'd just say they were pretty meh. I agree with you on supergroups. Generally it can end up being a roomful of dudes that are songwriters in their own rite and it can be a war for who's stuff they use. It's a tricky dynamic even if there is one principle songwriter because then it can feel like a solo project with top tier hired guns. Vomit Forth didn't quite make it but I do dig that album.

Necrotic Nick- Hey, we all hear music differently so I can totally see where certain albums will appeal to others. I really like Fleshgod Apocalypse but that new one just didn't hit for me. I feel like the scaled back extremity and scaled up symphonic elements did not work. As for Kerry, to me it was a collection of Slayer leftovers from an era of Slayer that I don't see as particularly that good. It's OK thrash but I don't think anyone would be talking about it if Kerry's name wasn't on it. For me Catagory 7 got off to a rocky start and I'd like to see if they chose to write as a band rather than just having one main songwriter this time.

Slayer has been boring for decades now, just like Metallica. They are simply legacy bands. Talented musicians but as song writers, they lost it. And this is not an elitist statement, for the most part only Met. I'll listen to today is a few select songs on Load/reload and Divine is my favorite Slayer album. But everything after that for both of them? Meh.

I feel like folks sell Kerry's contributions short because many have some personal grudge against him. Yes, I agree Jeff wrote many of Slayer's classic songs, but Kerry did co-write a few of them (like Raining Blood) and wrote many good songs on his own. He was also the business/PR guy for the group (like Lars Ulrich and Scott Ian are for theirs) and did play a big role in the band's success.
@ProfJasonC

@@TheMrHavish I think it's also a factor that Kerry King has total "Get off my lawn" energy. No one can deny his contributions to Slayer, but yeah, Hanneman's songwriting, Tom's vocals, and Dave's drumming were what made them great. And his claim that Tom isn't a great bass player and that he, Kerry, actually played a ton of bass parts in the studio might be true, but it was a dick move to announce it like that.

This video finally made me decide to listen to the Mötley Crüe EP just to see if it’s as bad as literally everyone says it is. I grew up listening to my sister’s and older cousins’ hair metal tapes, so I figured it might be enjoyable on a nostalgic level. But holy hell, what irredeemable trash. I was writing better riffs and lyrics when I was 13. That’s not a brag, my lyrics and riffs at 13 were awful. This album, made by pop metal legends, is just somehow even worse.

That Evil Dead album is truly something awful. That’s a perfect example of what NOT to do after a decent comeback album a few years ago.

Necrotic Nick- It had a few moments where it mustered up some energy but overall it was a pretty lethargic listen for me. They came back with some fury on that last one but this new one is just kinda flat and by the numbers.

Necrotic Nick- I really dug that one despite it not making my top 40. I think it might be one of their best honestly.

That’s one of the best of the year, those guys are on a whole other lvl compared to most, them and malignancy are the kings of the technical side of brutal death, in a league of their own
