That Tribulation album is probably one of the two catchiest records I’ve heard all year, with the other one being Kanonenfieber’s incredible album. Great list, Nick!

Necrotic Nick- Tribulation, Unto Other and even Cemetery Skyline reminded me how much I still love goth rock this year. Tribulation just flat out nailed it though right down to the production. It's so lush and dark. I'm going to be converting a lot of Sisters of Mercy fans to that one if I can get them to listen to it.

Fantastic top 10! I'm on board with you on five of these, and I just checked out that Suffer album. Really like that and will most likely purchase it. Glad to see Better Lovers here. I haven't seen that on any other lists at all. Wish you guys would have reviewed it, because it was blowing my mind that weekend (and continues to). Love the High on Fire and Blood Incantation too! The Opeth album has some tracks that are still bothering me a little, but I really dig most of it. And, of course, Nile. That is my #1. Holy shit, they knocked it out of the park. This does blow Vile Nilotic Rites away. Way faster and more aggressive. Absolutely incredible. 1. Nile-The Underworld Awaits Us All 2. Blood Incantation-Absolute Elsewhere 3. Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Suffer might be my favorite death metal hidden gem on this list. Pretty underground band and we're happier than hell to promote that absolutely sick album. Better Lovers was my big surprise this year. That album packs a vicious punch. It was a legit battle for number 1 this year between Blood Incantation, Nile, Judas Priest, Crypt Sermon, Opeth and even Suffer for bit. I like a good challenge though.

I enjoyed your list Nick. You put a lot of work into making this. To me, 2024 was the year of the debut/sophomore release. Iotunn, Mur, Cistvaen, Modern Rites, Void Witch, Sovereign, Avmakt & Vicious Blade put out incredible albums. I think the future of metal is bright and that bands like these are given a chance at metal festivals etc

For me the deciding factor was that Blood Incantation really pushed themselves creatively where I think Nile just executed what they do so well to damn near perfection. I've got nothing but good things to say about both.

I have the same number one you do. I found Absolute Elsewhere without any reviews or recommendations. It just popped up on KZbin one day and I clicked play. I kept listening to it, and then I bought it. Then I started seeing other people saying they liked it too. Can't argue with that. I hope everyone who loves that album is buying it and not just streaming. Send those guys some cash. Let them have an avalanche of merch sales. They deserve it.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, Blood Incantation has definitely been doing its rounds on the year end lists and honestly it's well deserved. I've been a fan since Starspawn and I think this is their most ambitious, creative album yet. It's good to see an underground band get some measure of success like this.

I totally agree with all your picks but the standout for me this year was Slimelord "Chytridiomycosis Relinquished". I love this thing it's dense, complex and full of creepy accents. I feel like I'm transported to some strange dimension as depicted on the cover, like a bad acid trip but in a good way 🤯

Necrotic Nick- Slimelord was close to making it on my list. 20 Buck Spin in general had a great year with pretty much all their releases honestly. I didn't come back to that one as much but I do think it's a killer release. That atmosphere on that album is so strange and unsettling. Definitely makes for a fun listen for sure.

My top 10 personally: 1. Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere (no explanation needed) 2. Eidola - Eviscerate (like a darker, proggy, slightly heavier Dance Gavin Dance) 3. Swallow The Sun - Shining (Controversial pick, but I think it's a great catchy goth metal album. It's like a better version of HIM. Maybe not better than Venus Doom though. That album is great) 4. 200 Stab Wounds - Manual Manic Procedures (one of my favorite current death metal bands for a reason) 5. Fulci - Duck Face Killings (one of my favorite current death metal bands for a reason) 6. Leprous - Melodies of Atonement (lots of great song, even though it's not of my favorite leprous albums overall) 7. Bilmuri - American Motorsports (a really fun catchy mix of pop, country, hard rock, and djenty guitars. Super fun band to see live as well) 8. Tribulation - Sub Rosa In Æternum (one of the most consistently great bands. Their songwriting is killer no matter what they try) 9. Spectral Wound (Wasn't listening to a lot of black metal this year honestly, but I always check out Spectral Wound because they always give me what I want out of black metal) 10. Fit For An Autopsy - The NothingThat Is (my deathcore pic. I like deathcore, but very few deathcore bands can make whole albums that i don't get bored of about halfway through. FFAA is one of the exceptions) Honorable mentions: Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon Poppy - Negative Spaces Vola - Friend of a Phantom Fellowship - The Skies Above Eternity (My power metal pick, this was close to making it to top 10) High On Fire - Cometh the Storm Full of Hell - Coagulated Bliss Nails - Every Bridge Burning Thrown - Excessive Guilt Undeath - More Insane Jeris Johnson - Dragonborn (another one a lot of metalheads definitely would hate, but i thought it was fun. Haven't liked anything else he has done, but this was like a mix of Avenged Sevenfold, Nickelback, and trap music with Skyrim/viking inspired lyrics, and I get down with it)

Blood Incantation is probably my favourite album of the year, but really pleased to see Suffer being mentioned, their album has been a consistent favourite of mine since it released in January. Necrotic Nick- I love that new Nile and honestly I haven't been that blown away by a Nile album since Annihilation of the Wicked. It's got a more crisp production but it definitely didn't sound plastic to me. We all hear music differently.

Hey Nick, my top ten (fuck it, top11 - didn’t want to leave any of these off) in some kind of order (could change at any moment, particularly the top 5.). If you feel it’s not real music with all that horrible growling, then probs stay away from this list. 11- Kruelty- Profane Usurpation. Just an EP, but holds its own. 10 - Job for a Cowboy - Moonhealer. Technical but not overloaded with wankery. Great album even if they do have the worst name in all of music. 9 - Nails - Every Bridge Burning. Amazing HM2 grindcore. Called an album but an EP in terms of length. Just an absolute brutal punch to the face. 8 - Ulcerate - Cutting The Throat of God. This seemed to have disappointed a lot of people who see it as a weaker retread of their previous masterpiece, Stare into Death and be Still. I don’t agree. It’s not quite as good as that, but that might be these NZ technical death metal gods best album, and this is still amazing and does incorporate some new ideas too, including blackened passages and even some more straightforward, almost headbangable sections. I loved it. 7- Warlust - Sol Invictvs in Vmbrae Satanae. Black metal with death metal production values. Quite a change from their previous rawer sound. Like Mgla mixed with mid-period Behemoth and something melodic like Imperium Dekadenz. 6 - Thou -Umbilical. Perhaps the heaviest album yet from these southern US anarchi-sludge fiends. Shorter songs, more stripped back than earlier releases. Despite the heaviness, I think the love for Nirvana they have shines out more in this than in their other releases. 5 - Antichrist Siege Machine - Vengeance of Eternal Fire. How can two guys make such a thick, extreme racket? Probably the most extreme release on this list, absolutely mental. Not necessarily the heaviest, but the most extreme. 4 - Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere. Pink Floyd meets Morbid Angel with blackened elements. If that sounds weird, well it kind of is, but it works so well. Even Time magazine had this in their top 10 of 2024 number 7). 3 - Oxygen Destroyer - Guardian of the Universe - Kaiju- themed death thrash. Super fun, full speed ahead. I have a blast every time I chuck this on. 2 - Ripped to Shreds - Sanshi. Death metal with elements of grind and heavy metal too. Awesome band with no misses in their discography, the best HM2 music of the year. 1 - Nile - The Underworld Awaits Us All. Such a vicious slab of top tier death metal. Just gobsmacked by the ferocity and the energy they continue to bring.

Can’t believe I left that off, comes of trying to type one handed on my phone while pretending to be engaged with the conversation going on around me. Slot it in at 4 and shuffle everything else down one rank.

Necrotic Nick- Solid list, man! The only one I really wasn't a huge fan of on here was the new Antichrist Siege Machine. I just feel like it didn't hit as hard as Purifying Blade. Kanonenfieber was a solid listen but I think it might have been a tad overhyped by the time I got around to jamming it.

@ Fair enough, man. I’d been waiting for the Kannonfieber one and listened to it as soon as I could, also I’m pretty insulated from the hype machine, so was able to enjoy it on its merits. Not actually very familiar with Purifying Blade, been meaning to go back and give it a good listen, but haven’t got around to that yet. Cheers to you, Jon and the other Thrallers for all the reviews and laughs throughout the year. Looking forward to the other fella’s lists and then to see what 2025 holds for us in metal.

Necrotic Nick- Actually, that Blood Incantation isn't a vinyl. It's a 3 CD 1 BluRay set. It's got the album, the Luminescent Bridge EP, a Live BluRay and All Gates Open which is the score to their making of the album series I believe. Yeah, I dug the fuck out this album. It really is their best work to date and I'm not surprised it's popping up on a lot of lists out there. The new Judas Priest held the top spot for awhile but other stuff crept up but man is Invincible Shield a banger.

Hey Nick checkout NECKBEAKKER'S debut album Within the Viscera - It dropped pretty late in the year this month so likely wont make anyone list but it's just Great Death metal from a young Danish band. The album I listened to the most was Fit for An autopsy the Nothing that is.

For me Nick, it was going to take something special to knock Ihsahn off of my number 1 spot, and Blood Incantation done just that. Truly an incredible album, and as a fan of both prog and death metal, it was a dream come true. Opeth and Nile's were amazing and Cemetery Skyline was an unexpected bonus too. The Blood Incantation album would probably be my number 1 as well. You are spot on, the dynamics are amazing. Morbid Floyd/Pink Angel indeed. The Nile album is also amazing. It’s so good, I’m still considering going to the upcoming show here (despite certain, um, impediments on that line up) to see them play these songs live. That show would be the ecstasy and the agony for sure. 😆

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, that album flat out blew me away. Nile was a mazing too but I think they just did what they usually do at a high level while Blood Incantation really pushed themselves to make something that pushed them creatively. Yeah, I'm missing that Nile tour next year but I am catching them at MDF next year so I'm all good on that tour package lol.
