Skateboarding is a spectrum. On one end you have "Artistic Expression" and on the other end you have "Athletic Performance". Pros that call their skateparks "training facilities" and are accused of being robotic skew toward the Athletic side of the spectrum. Pros that ooze a unique style, perform unconventional tricks at unconventional locations/obstacles, and incorporate novel fashion or music into their skating skew to the Artistic side. Some stay on one end, most of us fluctuate somewhere in the middle. Athletic, artistic, young, old, male, female... there is room for everybody in skateboarding.

I hope his mentality can reach a large chunk of skaters and remind them that we do this for fun. To be expressive and creative, to show our unique aspects and styles. Yeah, you can make it about competition, but that almost damages the core of what skating is. Thanks for the vibe check on skating, Mark.

it's always so crazy to see MA get skated by high-key people in the culture, just cuz NY is a couple hours south. even some of the street footage is stuff i've seen 16-18yr old locals just getting really into skating trying to hit. little 2 stair flips and shit. hitting Charlestown, Lynch park, Chinatown gate, and AQ...but no Orchard birds nest footie. nuts. thanks Gonz and Thrasher and all the other people in this. showing that the suburban locals can commit just as much positivity to their nothing spots, and still be there just to have fun. you ain't gotta be the next Naijah to skate.

I just feel that the people who skate only to be competitive in X Games and the like, have forgotten the roots and simple purity of what skating is. Self expression and a release. Don't misunderstand - I don't look at all competitors this way. Just the ones who pursue skating only for getting medals. I have met and skated with some incredibly talented, creative people who have a vision of "everything is skateable" that you have never seen on a podium but blew people's fucking minds. That's what I love about skating. People who build the community and share with it.
