Just found your channel - thanks KZbin! I did my first thread graft 2 years ago on a Trident Maple. A month later I decided to rub the buds off the approach side to avoid wasting energy where it wasnt needed...but for some insane reason I rubbed them off the 'active' branch end. How could I be so dumb!!! I couldn't believe I had done that. Anyway - loved your instructional style and am definitely going to be looking through more this winter. I always think of Melbourne (Upwey) when I hear that accent. Cheers, Xavier

Hi Scott, it's great to have you back. I'm always envious as you guys in the southern hemisphere get into spring. It's late summer here in the UK. I'll certainly reference this video in 6 months time aha. I've been thoroughly enjoying your bonsai podcast as always. Thanks and take care, Alex

Hi, thanks for the great tutorial. Did you drill through the centre of the trunk/heartwood, or off to the side?

Thanks! I try to drill straight through the middle of the trunk.

Hi, Scott!! I’m a big fan of ur KZbin channel AND of Bonsai Stuff the podcast. Both offer excellent info that I have put into practice on my own trees. I have a random question…… I understand that we have completely different climates (I’m on the west coast, zone 8b, in the United States) My question is: about how much sunlight do u give ur Japanese and trident maples? Less than 6hrs? More? I feel as if I am constantly moving my trees around trying to find the right balance of sun and shade. I tend to error on the cautious side and would rather have my trees get not enough light vs too much light. Overall I aim to give the trees roughly 3-5hrs of full direct sunlight and dappled sunlight the rest of the day. I have only been practicing bonsai for 3yrs now but plan for it to be a life long passion! So any and all info that ur willing to impart on me would be hugely appreciated!! Take care, Scott and keep them great videos and podcast episodes coming!! Happy Bonsai!! Much respect from the west coast of the United States

Excellent tutorial Scott. Do you think a Dawn Redwood is a suitable candidate for this process. Like seeing your spring videos to give me fodder for my spring work next year here in Canada. Thanks

Thanks Jonathan! I would give it a go. Just be careful not to damage the buds when feeding the branch through.

Why did you angle the thread downwards, instead of upwards?

Hi Bob. There’s a bud the will bring the branch up so there will be really interesting movement in the new branch.
