Warning! Explicit language! But I figured it out!
Check out position 12:09 minutes in and tell me what you see wrong?

I know every lathe is different. I zero out the cross slide, move the compound. I ways disengage the half nuts, and engage them on a number on the thread dial. Have a great day.

Love it. I'm not a machinist but I have a few guesses based on time index 12:53. If your compound's scale set to 0 moves the cutter parallel to the work piece as you advance the compound's handwheel, and then a setting of 5° from parallel would cut a gentle taper, then yes you would have to turn it 60° from parallel to get 30° from perpendicular (complimentary angles). The other videos you watched may have mounted their compound with 0° as perpendicular, instead of parallel, to the work piece.

Apparently the Chinese use a different convention than we do here.

Super sweet once you had the compound angle set right ! The Chinese do it the same as everyone else btw. (😁) It's just that the angle scale on the compound is more for turning tapers so it's a bit confusing when it comes to setting it up for threading. Someone else got caught out here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5iZhIqGqceSq7s So glad my lathe has a spindle brake when I have to cut threads with the half nut engaged all the time...

It has to be 30 degrees off of 90 degrees to the ways which should reas 0 on your scale. slow your spindle speed down also and get quicker stoppng that half nut and backing off the cross slide. Wire brushing the threads will clean them up and a little cutting oil wont hurt.

ummm i think maybe you will find these tips are designed to cut on both edges at once. you trying to do single point thread cutting use HSS its much better for this technique of thread cutting personally i never used the compound slide set to anything other than 90 deg to long travel maybe im old school

chinese compound have the zero set parallel to the ways and the rest have the zero set perpendicular to the ways that's all that is. It doesn't read double.
