So mkbhd doesn't seem to fully understand the fediverse. You don't have to have all your stuff in one app. You can have it all separate but we your followers can choose to have all your content in one place if we choose to.

You should try to join the fediverse and learn how it works. It's great Your instance tracks your followers, content and stuff. If you post it gets federated to all your followers and they can reply, like and boost. All these interactions will be federated back to you. So everything works like it should. Users can choose what they want to see by following. You can have multiple accounts per thing you want to do or you can do everything (posting/viewing) with the same account. It depends on your preference. I think most people use a social media platform because of the people that are there. So please join and people will follow you!

History repeats (maybe)! The hockey/TV analogy is particularly insightful. The Fediverse if it ever fully matures, will turn posts into "programming" and apps into "cable TV stations". Instead of Facebook and Twitter, you'll have the Cooking App and the Sports App to collate all the content. Will it make things "better"? I dunno. But it'll make things different so that might be fun.

the email protocol came at the right time for it to succeed, whereas this fediverse thing seems like it's two decades too late for what it's trying to accomplish.
@KOSAMAGAMES Жыл бұрын
Email wanted to succeed while AcitivityPub is trying to empower. You can tell people seek private server and public with the rise of discord. But as Discord grows it's cost is blowing up, they permanently host content indefinitely, one day the bill will be due. You can't escape, export, and move over so easily. In the Fediverse your content is yours, if you make your own server could cost like $5 a month and just have your friends on it. Personally when I joined I did it to have a place for my friends and share stuff, I got tired having to move my stuff or lose my stuff like when Myspace died and broke. Now if I wanted to I can export my stuff and run a Mastodon off the Internet locally at my house if I wanted. I think others realized this and it's success is just an extra.
@HonoredMule Жыл бұрын
Open, decentralized platforms, open source tech, open standards, etc. are always super late to market and only succeed after proprietary systems teach a whole new generation of tech enthusiasts just how much they cost in the long run. They start late from way behind and often have a technically harder objective to implement (at least if you discount the lock-in and monetization schemes of private platforms). But big tech will always _always_ eventually burn _every shred_ of good will and even tolerance the market affords. Doing less would be leaving money on the table, and that's not how (especially publicly traded) businesses operate. Then, those projects that just want to provide a public good are around reminding us that community and cooperation are actually pretty cool. It's such a slow burn because the primary pipeline to building those projects and communities _starts_ with people who've already been burned too hard to return _even in the face of no real alternative,_ learning from either the current round of big tech abuse or a previous one. The fediverse is right on time. I might even be willing to try out something like facebook or twitter for the first time soon. 😉

My problem with this connected audience thing is I use different platforms for different things. I watch MKBHD on KZbin, I think I follow you on Twitter too. I don't want you on Instagram. That's not why I use instagram. Same for myself. My instagram personality is NOT my Twitter personality and that's not my Reddit personality. It's probably a great idea for creators, but I'm 100% certain most consumers would hate it. Unless it was voluntary and you could keep everything separate, then I definitely wouldn't want to be a part of it. Also not sure why any social site would want to be a part of this. They're already losing money, now you want to decentivize people using your app because they don't need to open your app, they get everything they want from one app? What's the benefit? And now Instagram has to deal with the bandwith from every tweet from 8 different micro blogging sites? What's the point of that...

I like how decentralized something like email is like how a user with an @iCloud email domain can communicate with an @gmail user without problem - but if I were to subscribe to MKBHD's "email" and he posts all of his yt, twitter, insta, and TikTok into this "email inbox" sorta deal then I would hate that. I'd much rather just go to each platform for all that content and see it where it's supposed to be.

@mapachw Жыл бұрын
ActivityPub is not the same as cross-posting everywhere. At least as of now, to get people from different platforms in your feed you need to follow them. But yes, moderation would need to scale up real fast. And we would have to trust Meta to actually do something about the bigots in their app to prevent malicious interactions cross-platform.
@ScottMStolz Жыл бұрын
It's no different than different websites having different content. Bad sites and users can be blocked by moderators or users, and you avoid a lot of crap by simply not following people who post crap. Basically, don't subscribe to content you don't want to see. And if something does slip through, you can block them or ask the admin to block them.
@CeruleanDerpo Жыл бұрын
No because if there is a social network (let's call it an instance) in the fediverse where this stuff is allowed or that is poorly moderated, other instances can defederate from it, essentially blocking their posts and interactions out
