Most early 19th-century rural New Englanders were farmers and agriculture was a large sector of the overall regional economy even as the Industrial Revolution took hold. In a typical New England town at the time, some 250 farms might have been scattered across the landscape. The 1830s were also a time of transition and innovation, as new ideas and new products flooded into the region from around the world, impacting all facets of the economy. Three particularly fascinating agricultural crazes during this decade include merino sheep, mulberry trees, and rohan potatoes.
