Three Cliffs Bay sits on the southern coast of the Gower Peninsula near Swansea, South Wales.
The Gower was the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and when you visit, you’ll understand why.
The bay takes its name from the 3 limestone cliffs which jut out into the bay.
There is no road access to Three Cliffs Bay but there are a number of options in the area where you can park and walk.
On this trip, I parked in the National Trust carpark in the village of Southgate and walked along the Wales coastal path to the bay itself.
If you walk upriver (Pennard Pill) from the bay you get to Pennard Castle. Like most castles in the area, it was built by the Normans in the 12th century. The castles and the small settlement which surrounded was finally abandoned in the 1500s due to the encroachment of the surrounding sand dunes.
Although, the beach is beautiful because of the cliffs and the river swimming isn’t recommended due to the strong currents. If you do want to swim then nearby Oxwich Bay is a good option.
