Hello friends. This video demonstrates three different ways to teach addition to young children. Addition is a very important concept in math. If a child does not understand addition it can affect their confidence in math. Because children learn in different ways this video goes over three different ways to teach addition a child. If you child does not understand the way they are being taught in school trying an alternative method may be helpful.
Background info: For those of you who are new to this channel, hello I am Dr. Theo Nyame. I am a full time surgeon who strongly believes in early childhood education. I have two children who learn in the home and currently attend school for social purposes. I am excited to share the lessons I have learned in educating young children.

Brilliant work sir, new subscriber redirected from your Instagram page. Thank you for showing spending time with your kids no matter how busy you are is important. For the number line method, I found (as an Electrical Engineer and eldest of 6 siblings) it’s best to teach through Hopscotch, or snake like maze drawn on the floor with chalk or laminated paper with numbers , principles being start the game at the first No (eg 2) of the first problem, your team mates says to jump (eg 3) denominator times to get the answer which is the numerator of the second problem. Etc till the end. Then when you teach this put a stick figure on the starting point, and if you ask the kids how many times should the figure jump they know since they have had practice. (Since your son hasn’t done it have your daughter tell him how many times to jump, should be fun )

I’m a board certified neurosurgeon. I’ve been in the international space station implanting chips inside chimp’s brains. Elon musk and I are friends if it wasn’t clear already. I also cured cancer twice but was paid good money to keep hush. Anyways, just making sure you knew, I think this is an inaccurate learning method. I had a 5.0 gpa in Medschool. The trick is to cram in as much information as possible to ace the tests. I don’t remember a thing since then but the concepts stay in tact. The caffeine helps too, happy learning!

😅 my son is three years old and he has been obsessed with skip counting songs from the time he was 18 months. He can skip count from 2 to 24 easily. Currently I’m struggling with getting him to understand the difference between multiplying and adding any tips? He multiplies everything. 😔 multiplying appears to be his happy place.

My daughter is 3 and I ordered numicon to work through with her. Do you know of that way to teach maths? It is very visual and hands on. Love your videos by the way. I am homeschooling.

Maybe allow the kids to do the jumping while using the number line method...I think my daughter would enjoy that.

Loved this. My daughter is 3 and she understands addition using your 1st method but now working on memory which is taking longer as she always tries to count her fingers. She is also easily distracted or just being lazy. If I ask, what is 2+2 , she may say 3 or something silly like 7, like she is not actually thinking about it logically. Any suggestions please?

The way you are teaching her may not be her way of learning. Each child picks up on different methods as well. Some may get it quicker through color and some way get it though regular play and some may get it just by memorizing it u til they can understand what they’re being taught.

I’m concerned and I have a 4 year old. Another thing, she may not like hoe much time is spent on it or maybe the light force (if any) you put on her is overwhelming, being that, the method being used may not be her way of learning. I find that if she is being silly, she wants to do it but the method isn’t interesting enough for her to have fun with it! Try doing it through play, kids her age learn a lot through play, mix it up a bit, maybe she’ll start interacting more. Just because his kids caught on to it doesn’t mean any other kid won’t catch on early but it may take more time and patience, being that you have to learn the way your child takes information in, basically their way of learning. Good Luck Mammas🥰
