"Jeremiah was a bullfrog!" I knew that once you discovered Three Dog Night you would eventually find this song. We used to sing this in grade 7 music class at my elementary school when I was 12 years old back in 1970 when it first came out. Us kids loved it and yes, it was a unifying song! We all had a gas in music class! Our school principle would come into our music class and stand at the back of the classroom, where none of us would notice him, and he would just hum right along with us belting our lungs out for joy! What wonderful memories! His name was Mr. Sellinger and he was a great guy. He demanded we behave and learn our lessons but he loved to have fun, too, and had a good sense of humour. Ah, the good old days when music was great and people had their heads screwed on straight! 😎💖🎸💖💖💖

Written by Hoyt Axton, “Joy To The World” was originally recorded in 1970 as part of the album, “Naturally,” then subsequently edited and released as a single in February 1971. Chuck Negron is the lead singer on this song. I was 12 years old when I first heard this song, and was intrigued by the lyrics to the song, especially “Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog.” Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, and with the great DJ’s of 77 WABC radio, such as Cousin “Brucie” Bruce Morrow, Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, playing this song in their rotation on a constant basis, I ended up memorizing all the words to this song and would sing it aloud. “Joy To The World” topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Charts at number 1 for the year, and was the #1 song of 77 WABC’s Top 100 of 1971. What great memories!

Yeah, it was an old Aboriginal habit when traveling across country. It got colder at night and, if it was just slightly cold, you'd generally dig a hole to sleep in and spoon with a dog for warmth. If it was a bit colder, 2 dogs and, as the saying goes, if it was very cold, 3 dogs. The correlation between them and the band is you had 3 singers, so, if you wanted to hear a good song, 1 singer, something better, 2 singers and if you really wanted to rock the house down, 3 singers. However, again you two bring happiness into my life ... love the dancing 🤗😉👍!!!

Yes, that's the origin of the saying three dog night. It's from the Inuit people in the arctic circle, who used their sled dogs to stay warm at night in their igloos. And a bullfrog is a very large species of frog with a very loud croak.

A three dog night originally was a term used by shepherds or similar, up in the mountains letting the sheep or goats just forage in nature, sleeping under the stars, maybe away from home until cold weather comes. So a small fire to cook and 3 dogs to keep you warm. No letting them in the house. Think about the story/movie Heidi up in the alps. 😎😎😎😎

I'd love to talk Home Free into covering this, which I will absolutely do the second I meet them. "You guys ever do Joy To The World?" "Sure, come to one of our Christmas concerts." "No, no, I mean the REAL one." Tim Foust opens with "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" in his patented 8-octaves-below-human-range voice (you know what a bullfrog sounds like now?), and Rob gets "you know I love the ladies" with his patented hip-swivel that will drive said ladies mad. It's a clapper and a crowd pleaser.

In this song frog is a very old slang word referring to a person of French ancestry. The delicacy of frog legs originated in France and is why that particular slang term came into being. This goes decades back in the long bygone days when there were slang terms for pretty much every nationality. Some of them pretty mean. Hoyt Axton changed the word to bullfrog--probably to Americanize it. But he was definitely referring to someone from France--which explains the lines "I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him drink his wine. And he always had mighty fine wine." The French are well-known for their quality wine production.

Never had 3 dogs in the bed but I have had 2 cats and a dog but I don't think that would make a very cool band name. By the way a bullfrog is a large breed of frogs that can grow to be the size of a saucer plate and even bigger. Mostly found around large ponds. My brother's used to fish for them as you can fry the legs in flour and oil and eat them. I never tried them but they always said they taste like chicken.😂😂😂❤❤❤
