The two Grants items, peaked my interest. W.T.Grants was a department store chain, that went out in the late 60s, maybe early 70s. They may have had a store line brand of tools. Never came across any, myself, but the name took me back. The store was in Chelmsford, Ma. For three bucks, you got quite a haul! Thanks for taking me back, to a time long gone!

I think you found the sister to my tool box find. My Craftsman tool box was found in a pile of branches at a lake house in Maine. Considering the weeds surrounding the tool box it had been outside for many years. The contents were similar to your find. Twelve inch Riggard pipe wrench, twelve inch Crescent wrench, Vietnam era military pocket knife, various Craftsman wrenches and sockets, etc. I saved about half of the tools (some too far rusted to be safe again). I can't help but wonder how someone would lose a complete tool box full of quality tools, left to the elements in northern Maine. I enjoyed your video.

@@357magdad I found a cigar box once that was crammed full of machinists tools -- a taper gauge, inside/ outside templates rulers of all sorts. Feeler gauges in metric and SAE Lots of stuff I don't even know what they are for. The lady was only asking 5 bucks for the whole box. The taper gauge alone is a Starrett, probably worth 75 bucks alone. A good find

Great haul!!! 3 bucks!!! Grants was a department store chain mainly located on the east coast. They were located up and down the east coast and were in business for about 70 years until they went bankrupt in 1975. Treasure!!!!! Dunlop used to be the British Goodyear. Used to make every type of rubber product you can think of. Those beautiful Jaguars and Aston Martins James Bond used to tool around in had Dunlop tyres on them. I can't remember there being tools made by Dunlop but it's possible. Stanley used to make tools in Britain too and they were very good. I have a few still and they are very jealously guarded. I'd have been over the moon with this haul there some great stuff in there.

I saw a Craftsman tool box sitting in a driveway at a garage sale. It had 10 or so drawers. I asked how much and the lady said $5.00. I whipped out 5 and bent down to pick up the box and couldn't move it. She told me she had a dolly if I needed it. I got the box to the back of my truck and a man from across the street saw me struggling and walked over to help me load the box. He said she must have had someone just put the box out because it wasn't there a half hour ago. He told me the Lady had caught her husband and was selling all his stuff while he was at work. The neighbor had bought guns, tools, and lots of stuff for a hundred dollars. The Craftsman box I got was full of high dollar tools that were all like brand new. Cordless tools of all kinds. Air impacts, drills, socket sets, everything imaginable.

Hello Again, 357magdad! As I rather said in my previous reply, a few of those other tools also caught my eye, & I wanted to comment on those as well! The 1st of those, is that yellow handled Screwdriver Set. My Grandpap bought me a set of those, in 1986 or 87' (along with some other lower-quality tools), from a little discount tool store, in a plaza in Charles Town, WV; near where my family lived @ the time. He'd just given me an old car of his, & knew I didn't have but very few tools of my own yet, at that time, & thought I ought to be carrying some tools on the road with me. I never did like those Screw drivers much! LOL! I always felt that their handles were way too thin, & prevented me from being able to apply enough torque to loosen even the simplest of screws to properly crack 'em loose! Plus I always felt that the tips on the Philips Screwdrivers, were way too blunted!! They actually wouldn't go into a lot screw heads which I tried to use them on! Even though; they were actually the correct size, otherwise!! The last tool I want to comment on, is that miniature pair of pliers! My Grandpap always kept a set of those in his tool chest, in the various Auto-Body shops where he worked, & he also kept a pair either in the pants or shirt pocket, of his "everyday clothes" at all times!! :-) He swore by 'em, & told my Dad & I more than once, that a guy should always keep a pair of those on him, as you could be sure you'd end up needing them for something, at some point or other! After Pap died, (at age 76), in the Altoona, Pa. Hospital, from Cancer; on July 20, 1988, my Grandma found a set of those little pliers in his pants pocket when she finally went thru them shortly afterward! I ended up getting those pliers for my own, when I was permitted to claim some of Pap's things, about a week or so after he was laid to rest. I cleaned them up a bit, & tried always keeping them in my pocket as he did, but that became uncomfortable at times, so I eventually just began carrying THEM, (as well as a couple of Pap's Pocket Knives), in a large Hand Tool Box of my Dad's which I restored around that same time. Unfortunately, that Tool Box & all of it's contents, were stolen from my Dad's shed in 1993 or '94, by either a "sticky-fingered" neighbor kid, or sibling of mine!! Both my Dad & I, kept watch at the 2 or 3 Pawn Shops in that area, for several months afterward, but they never did turn up! However; my Dad & I both, got the feeling that one Pawnbroker was lying to us, when he said he'd never received the box, nor the tools! Grrr! Well enough of my "rambling on" LOL!! (as my Grandma would call it)!! :-) Again, I sure enjoyed this video, & seeing those few particular tools, & have sure enjoyed all of the memories which each "conjured up" for me!! Thanks So Much Once Again! Ron H. Abilene, TX. I

@Ron-vq3zl 2 жыл бұрын
You're Very Welcome! Yes, I sure hated losing that toolbox for sure! The 1st reason of course; is because I'd put a lot of sanding time into it, plus 1 can of primer, & 2 cans of spray paint, (1 can of Red for the tray, & 1 can of Gray for the box). But also, at just 24 or 25 yrs. old, it was only the 2nd item I ever attempted to restore, & without a whole more training than simply watching my Pap, & my Dad, while they did paint jobs on both Cars & Trucks, but also smaller items, such as that box. Even so, that box, as well as the Push Mower Deck, I restored first; both turned out perfectly, & I was proud of them, plus; I hadn't gotten much use out of that box before it was stolen from me! :-) The 2nd reason was obviously, because of those tools & knives of Paps that had been in it, plus a few other small, specialty tools that either folks had given me, or I had found & bought cheap @ flea markets, which were NOT CHEAP, to replace NEW!! A 3rd reason, is because that box had been my Dad's. He had acquired it, along with various tools, while taking a "Heating & A/C Correspondence Course" from ASI, (Advanced Schools Inc.) in the early to mid 1970's. Dad never finished that course, as he began taking it/paying for it, using funds from his G.I. Benefits, (from serving in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964), & unfortunately, when he went to sign up for either the 3rd or 4th part of that course, he was notified that limit of his military funds had run out! Anyway, after that, the Toolbox set around in our house, virtually untouched, about the next 15 to 17 years! Then around 1988 or '89 or so, Dad began putting a lot of his other tools in it, & using it regularly. Shortly after that time, I went to spend some time w/my folks, one weekend, & while there, I helped Dad do a Brake Job on either he or my Mother's Car. Unfortunately, I've gotta "tell on myself" and admit that when we finished, I forgot and left the box's tray behind one the car's wheels!! You can imagine what happened next! Yep! Dad ended up backing right over 1 end of that tray, & squashing it, pretty good! LOL!! A short while after that, I noticed that Dad had emptied that box & wasn't using it; so I took it home with me, and very carefully, & laboriously, pounded that tray back into shape, stripped all it's paint, then brought it back to Dad for some welding that it needed. I then took it back home, & proceeded to restore both the tray & box! If I recall correctly, I went to give it back to Dad, & he was quite impressed, & proud of my work! He then told me that I could "hold onto" that Toolbox, and use it for my own tools, as the only Toolbox I had of my own, was a small, very shallow one, that wouldn't hold all the tools which I'd accumulated by that time! So anyway, that's total significance which that Toolbox held for me. Besides that, up until it was stolen, I still felt that- that Toolbox, at least partially, STILL belonged to Dad, & so I REALLY HATED to see it stolen, from HIM, as well as from me!! To this day, I search ebay, in hopes that - that ol' ASI Toolbox will turn up on there, & hopefully still be in decent shape, & that I can bid on it, hopefully; get it back! :-) Ron P.S. I neglected to mention that I found an expired ebay posting of one of those same ASI Toolboxes, just the other day! It wasn't MY toolbox though, as I could tell that it had never been restored, as even though that box was a bit rusty, I could tell that it still had all of it's original paint, plus there was no hint of weld, at the one end of the tray's handle. If it hadn't already been sold, I'd have likely did some bidding on it though! :-)

I was buying Easco tools from a local independently owned auto parts store ( when we still had them) to turn wrenches on the '61 DeSoto I owned at the time, now some 40 years later I still have, and use these tools along with many others. I buy every Easco I see at the flea markets, they have stood the test of time. You will find some with the NAPA name on them that otherwise look like any other Easco, and they did make some tools for Craftsman, but these will look like any other Craftsman wrench except for the codes. Evaporust will clean all that up, I paid more than three bucks for the last V series Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet I bought, didn't need another, but it was all alone on the table with an idiot who let it sit out in the rain.

I've been looking for a 1-1/16" box wrench to dedicate to my table saw and you just pull one out of that box. Clean them up and you have some gems there. I call that a box deal. $3 for a box deal is good. And yeah you did good with that one. Some crap and some keepers. I knew that was a Kamp-King knife right off the bat. I keep one in my shed for opening bags. They're actually somewhat collectable.

I think Grant’s is or was a store chain like Woolworths. The rocks reminded me of “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” when after stopping at each house the gang would compare what they got and every time Charlie Brown says “I got a rock”. My favorites are the Yankee style push drills and screw drivers, sort of like cordless drill/drivers that never need recharging.

You have got tbe the luckiest guy in the world getting that box of tools for 3 dollars I couldn't buy those here for under 100 dollars . Just 1 rusty ratchet here is about 30 dollars. If I had those I would wash them in soapy water put them in a plastic tub put 4 gallons of white vinegar in it and 1 container of salt let them soak for 2 days wash them with sos pads dry them oil them and bam new tools. I loved the cutter with the fulcrum thing. I would restore that and use it to trim small branches, rose bushes etc. I have a straight fulcrum one that I like because the cutter bottoms out on an "anvil". I am sure this tool box refugee would have a lot more cutting leverage power. I would like to find a new on like it. It is made anymore? Good question.

Get yourself an old storage tub or cooler and put a couple of gallons of white vinegar in it. Drop those rusty tools in there and let them soak for a few days till the rust is gone. The vinegar used to be about $4 a gallon at Walmart but don't know now. Cheap and effective rust remover. After that some WD-40 and you're good to go.
