Sima Yi is right....zhuge liang is one in a millennium. He is one, if not the most loved characters in this series. If only he did not die broken -hearted.

I really like Zhuge Liang, except for three times, where I really hate what he did. 1. Didn't listen to Wei Yan for a surprise attack of 5,000 troops on Chang'an - success would mean Wei defeated. Failure would just mean 5,000 troops lost. 2. Put Ma Su in charge of Jie'ting instead of Wei Yan or another general. 3. Killing off Wei Yan, arguably the last great general of Shu.

Zhuge Liang ain't a military genius like he was portrayed. He committed A LOT of strategical mistakes. He made Ma Su as his escape goat for being defeated by a vastly bigger army.

Yang Yi was hopeless, after he successfully framed Wei Yan, he was reduced to a commoner, arrested and died disgracefully.

Wei Yan might not have been right, but he was definitely not wrong either. Too bad the DW version of Yan is so far fetched. I'd love to take this version and fight across the lands, beating ambushes and using the elements of surprise.

I can't believe they killed Wei Yan. I would've gave him the post of Grand Commander. He deserved it, he was a hair away from the rank of a tiger general. How sad they killed a loyal servant to the state like that.

It was not really like this, but Yang Yi managed to frame Wei Yan as traitor and had all his family and him been executed so that he can control Shu. But alas people trusted Jiang Wei more and Yang Yi was eventually been stripped into commoner, arrested and committed suicide after said he should have defected to Wei instead if he knew he can’t control Shu.

The test here was when Wei Yan was told to not enter the tent... and he entered anyway. He failed that test of respect and loyalty... and he probably didn't even know it. So, if he himself is this disrespectful, then how much respect can he truly expect from the generals and the soldiers following him? In the end, his rule is only based on "I am the strongest here". Wei Yan is not a real general. He's an overglorified bandit leader.

Zhuge Liang should not have gotten rid of Wei Yan. Without Wei Yan, Shu has lost all its experienced generals, and Wei Yan really did have a lot of credit and was loyal to Shu, though not to Zhuge Liang's successors (who shouldn't have been installed in the first place).

No one doubted Wei Yan's prowess. But his personality was a big problem. Wei Yan finds it hard to respect others, even if he himself demand respect. He has the makings of a corrupt leader, one who demands others to follow law and order while he himself is free to do whatever and is not subject to those rules. Sure sure Zhang Fei was like that too. But Zhang Fei has no designs for more power. Wei Yan however, always has his eyes to seize more power, more importance, more authority, all the better for him to bully his way to success. He's always ready to sow dissension in the ranks and use that to bolster himself, at the expense of the whole cause. He's still useful as subordinate if there are many people who are stronger than him, to keep him in line.. He's best when working alongside the old guard. But as the grand commander, and with everyone else his junior, and without anyone else to keep him in check, he's a disaster.

My favourite characters were Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi, Cao Cao cause he cracked me up, Sun Jian for his bad assery and Sun Quan because of how tricky he is. Watching Sun Quan and Cao Cao was like watching the comedy duo or something.

I would trust Jiang Wei over Wei Yan any day. Wei Yan only follows orders 50% then Zhuge Liang has to come up with another strategy due to Wei Yans abilities.

Sun Quan, Sima Yi and Cao Cao were all practically the same character except that Sun Quan seems to be a bit more innocent. When compared to Red Cliff though Sun Quan was the only character in that movie that had any real depth. Everyone else just seemed like a one dimensional stereotype. So you can really compare this series to a movie and see how every character has more depth than the ones in the John Woo film.

That being said... 5,000 is 1/10 of his army. 2. You are correct. Zhuge Liang, while knew the ability and talent, put too much trust in Ma Su because he was too close. That really was a disaster 3. This is really debatable. It is true that he was not rebellious against Shu itself as the novel describes, but he never got along with Yang Yi, who had control after Zhuge's death. So internal conflict could have arisen between them two.

I agree on some part, but I do not agree with some parts 1. Wei Yan's surprise attach at Zhuge Liang's point of view was too dangerous. For Shu Han, every single battle is critical. 5000 troops lost? How about loss of Wei Yan. In terms of being a good general, Zhang He was as good as Wei Yan. However, did Wei get in trouble seriously after Zhang He's Also, novel over-exaggerates the number of solders in Three Kingdom period. Zhuge probably had about 50,000 to do Northern Expedition. 2.

Indeed. In February of year 354, Huan Wen of Eastern Jin decided to launch Northern Expedition to reclaim Luo Yang and Chang An from Former Yan. General Sima Xun (stationed at Han Zhong) studied Wei Yan’s Ziwu Valley attack, and asked Huan Wen to adopt this strategy. The attack failed with catastrophic defeat and Huan Wen lost 10,000 troops out of 40,000. According to popular legend, Sima Xun got so humiliated with this defeat, he has ordered to find tomb of Wei Yan, then destroy the tomb. Zhuge Liang worked hard to rebuild Han’s military after death of Liu Bei. In just 5 years, Zhuge Liang raised 200,000 troops for the First Northern Expedition. For final expedition at Wuzhang Plains Zhuge Liang raised 100,000 troops.

I felt Wei Yan fell victim to every other officers greed of ambition and taking control. And Zhuge Liang wish was not to persue (Wei Yan does not even kowtow to Kongming and insults him at death - orders are not needed when you are dead). Wei Yan always felt sad and wanting Zhuge Liangs affection in this series, you can tell Wei Yan always wanted merit from Zhuge Liang, many times Wei Yan did not listen to Kongming precise orders... No wonder Jiang Wei was more trusted by Zhuge Liang than Wei Yan. Remember Zhou Yu and Lu Mengs obsession in obtaining Jing. And Lord Sun always said not to persue. Officers automatically do not listen to orders and rather do what seems fit to them and blame it on excuses of "oh they are dead, I am on a mission so my Lord can not stop me ..." The only reliable loyalty I have seen is Lu Meng to Zhou Yu / Sima Zhao to Sima Yi / Jiang Wei to Zhuge Liang / Zhao Yun to Zhuge Liang also Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang to Liu Bei. Every other officer seems to take advantage of situations... Based on this tv series.

If you recall how Wei Yan submit to Shu, he betrayed his former lord to surrender to Shu. Zhuge despite that and foresee old habit cannot change. He knew Wei Yan will betray Shu. In the mist of battling with Wei, internal affair must not occur. All rebel from within must be eliminated to focus on Wei. Wei Yan dare not to rebel when Zhuge was still alive. A sly fox will show its tail if opportunity given. His death is inevitable.
