Great for people that can afford a house with three garages but I'd like to see more videos about how the rest of us plebs are supposed to deal with EV's.

Why does the use of a 3 phase charger depend on having 3 garages?

@@deang5622 It doesn't but only the sort of people that can afford a house like that are likely to be able to afford getting a 3 phase supply put in along with all the other associated works.

@@mfx1 Of course it doesn't depend on having 3 garages. I just wanted to expose an error in your statement. But you're not entirely right in your thinking. The typical car battery is 100KWh. You can feed at most from a residential supply 23KW if you put in a dedicated circuit. Now that wouldn't leave any capacity left for anything else to be powered. So let's reduce that to say 15KW. So during the course of the night from 11pm to 7am, you can push in to 120KWh. So installing a dedicated circuit running on single phase, it is possible to fully charge a single EV vehicle. That, is you don't need a 3 phase supply. You could even charge up two cars to 50% of capacity, giving half their full range in miles. Which is more than enough to get people to work and back.

This is what we did in our UK home. Upgraded to 3 Phase free of charge. Then added:- 2 x 22kW home chargers (Grid Tied) 1 x 7kW home charger (storage battery & Solar Power) 2 x Tesla Powerwall batteries & Gateway 7.2kWp Solar Array Smart Meters & Ev Tariff 2 x Electric Cars Heat Pump, Induction Cooking & Electric Showers

Yes, although almost all only charge at 11kW on 3 phase AC. There are some model S that charge at 22kW I believe.

Yes, I charge my 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance on a 22 kW 3 Phase charger at home. But the maximum charge rate is 11.3 kW...

Not much point in three phase 22KW is there as most EVs only have 11KW AC to DC charger?

But if you do need a small car (with a range of about 200miles on the 50kWh versions), the Renault ZOE does charge at 22kW, so faster to charge at home than far more expensive cars.

If you have a 3 phase unit, you can pull 16A 3phase for 11kW, 32A 3phase for 22kW (Zoe & old Tesla) or if you’ve got a car which can only charge single phase you still get 32A for 7.4kW. If you restrict it to 16A needlessly for 11kW you’ll only get 3.6kW single phase.

We have 2x22kW fast Grid tied chargers at home. Both charge at 11kW without load balancing... so it's quite handy. We've also got a 7kW charger connected to Battery Storage & Solar for Summer & during blackout use.

No local isolator seems crazy, and an almost completely unrepeatable house and set up. Some in the UKcan ask for 3 phase upgrade but it costs 💰💰💰 and is only possible if cable in the street is suitable. And did Joltify pay to come on? I think Joe and a lot of Efixx’ videos are first class but some are just a mediocre semi hidden ad.

Wish you people in another country identify country because electrical vidios very seldom pertain to anything in the USA. As a life long electrician that worked in hundreds of homes NOT ONE ever had a three phase service so this vidio is 100% useless. Never heard of a single electrical ultility company that would even provide three service. Maybe if you had a 50 Millon dollar mega all electric mansion they might offer it but not to the 99.99% of the rest of homes .

Three phase is rare in the UK, but the norm in many European countries.

It's 100% useless for you, but then again you don't have to watch it. There are, but "another country" doesn't mean just US. In the Nordic countries 99% of the detached houses, all new apartment buildings and commercial buildings run on three phase 400V. We only install three phase chargers. There are one phase ones they are more temporary movable chargers

The expand on eFIXX's reply here yes 3 phase is rare to your average residential dwelling in the UK. But i can pretty much guarantee you that it is present in close vicinity to 99.99% of properties in either the under ground or over head supplying cables in the street. You can have 3 phase to your premises if your network operator (DNO) will allow it and you are willing to pay for it to be installed £££ / $$$ 😉 plus you will have a higher standing charge for a 3 phase supply. Indeed its probably the future for UK housing developments eventually as it will help with load balancing, premises micro generation equipment (or will it be 10A 3phase with a hybrid inverter a load of micro gen and 48v dc for everything in the home, some turbines in a local field along with battery storage to smooth outgrid capacity/ peaks troughs variations all designed in by law as part of the housing development 🤫 who knows time will tell!). eFIXX have looked at this in another video. I have been in plenty of UK detached homes with 3 phase granted they are larger homes for the UK but not mansions by any means probably only bit larger than your average detached USA homes 😉 🇺🇸.
