Fear and Loathing is no masterpiece yet it is an underrated film which I love very much. I think Gilliam;s adaptation of Thompson's novel is excellent. An absolutely brilliant film if one is open-minded and interested in the story, characters and subject matter. A rare, funny and thought-provoking movie. And for for those who think it's just about drugs it isn't. It's about much more than that

Nobody is better at telling a horrifying story than the man, the myth, Hunter S. Thompson. He was thrilling while being entertaining and comical at the same time. His books were genius and his ideas were original. Fuck the American Dream! Find your own high in life...but not from drugs always.

it's not comedy dude, it's the tragic of a sick nation, overwhelmed from the feeling to find the truth, peace and freedom. These two dudes are clearly victims of this time and don't want to accept reality so they escape and on their way, they just gave a fuck, Nothing to like, it's tragic, but unique. But okay everybody has his sight.

When I recently went back and read critics' reviews of this film, when it was originally released, I couldn't believe that every. single. one of them missed this point entirely. Critics either liked it for it's depiction of drugs, but disliked its lack of structure. or they absolutely despised both of these things. People fail to realize that the Vegas book -- according to Hunter -- contains a lot of truth, but it's still only about 40% true. He crafted an absolutely brilliant farce, in the vein of Don Quixote, based on a very wild time in Vegas with Acosta, and nobody seemed to understand the film's (or the book's) thesis when the film was released. It's a complete foil to -- and rebuke of -- the Leary/Hippie movement. With all the drug use in the film, not one single moment of it is depicted as anything but an irritating obstacle or an intense, lucid nightmare. Whereas Leary's experience with LSD was in strictly controlled settings, designed to be influentially peaceful during LSD administrations, Hunter asked "What if the setting were different? If LSD can really fix all of America's woes, than certainly taking LSD in the very heart of the American Dream should produce transcendental beauty?" It's a tale of taking the drug of choice of the Hippy movement -- arguably the very fuel of it -- and combining it with the most exaggerated aspects of real, mainstream America, and how the two were never likely to peacefully coexist at all. But it's not just a criticism of the Leary/Hippy era: It's also a eulogy for it. There are certainly comedic aspects to the film, like Don Quixote is quite hilarious at times, but you're absolutely right that, at the heart of it, this is absolutely a tragedy.

wow you just don't understand the point of this movie. It describs the time after the 70's revolution of peace, love and freedom and a lot of people just couldn't pass the step to another society and kinda hanging in the 70's and thats the tragic note from this brilliant movie. They took their own path of american freedom, enjoyed life full and went over the borderline of human mind and existance. you must be such a naive fool and ultimately boring to hate the characters.

This movie was lame. The novel was funny, not great but a good read. It had depth and was able to look at the drug fueled chaos objectively. This movie is just obnoxious and one note.
