This video is comic gold from start to finish. just another sporty hater. Ridden my sporties thousands of miles. Never ran out of fuel, Ridden through rain, wind, sleet, hail, and the best sunshine the sun could offer. no snow though. Only wobble I've ever had was when I'm taking a deep lean, peg scraping curve, without fork braces. You may have purchased a bent framed bike. I also ride two up on occasion and I'll admit, the passenger takes a beating on her vag during long trips, but I always kiss it and make it better later. bottom line... any sportster is as good or as bad as your comfort level. some ppl need a Cadillac, some are just motorcycle riders.

ikane1 definitely not a sporty hater, I actually miss a lot of things about my seventy-two. HD put a 2.1 gallon tank on it, all the other sporties other than the 48 have 50% more range with the 3.3 gallon. try taking a 2.1 gallon tank on a road trip, to an area you are not familiar with, there is a good chance you will run out of fuel! regardless, one day I'll buy another sporty for bar hopping.

I had a Sportster 883 with the 2.1 gallon tank. Every 80 miles, I was looking for a gas station. But, that one had the solid mounted engine so it vibrated my teeth out... So, stopping every 50 miles was a good thing. My brother-in-law went from the Bay Area, in California, to Sturgis (South Dakota) and back on that same sporty. When you buy one of those bikes, you just get the short distance bike with no ability to ride double (if you are over 200 lbs!). You're right with your assessment and some people will disagree, but that is life.

Bring a plastic, legal, 2 gallon gas can, secured with bungee chords if you know you are going on a long trip. Common sense.

PeterDad60, sounds like you are an old school rider who makes things happen. I have been riding since 1974 so I get your extra can of gas. The new riders don't even change their oil, check their tire pressure, do any servicing so putting an extra can of gas on the bike is like them carrying a map instead of using their GPS. It will never happen. Me? I like your idea and have used it on my old 1976 XL1000 with its 2.0 gallon tank with its stroker motor that had a range of 65 miles! Northern CA to Sturgis and back on that teeth breaker. No wonder why my teeth are chipped!!

it's amazing what a spoked rear wheel and flake paint job does for the overall look of a Sporty. I tour North America on my Sporty chopper and it's dead stable and reliable.

congrats on your new bike. I traded my sportbike for a 2016 sportster 72 about 6 months ago. it's my first HD and after riding sportbikes for 5 years I was ready for a change. the look of the 72 definitely won me over from all of the other HDs even if the bike I traded was a gsxr1000 which I knew speed was not going to be even close. definitely the tank was a drawback but I swapped it out with a 3.3 and that resolved that issue for me. I've heard about the wobble but I've hit 100 on this one multiple times and haven't had one yet and as far as comfort, I'm from New Jersey and rode all the way to Maine with my lady on the back and besides the general leg stretches it was like heaven compared to my sportbikes. obviously it comes down to the rider preferences but I really haven't had any regrets on the 72.

I've had both a 72 and a Dyna. The only thing I agree with you on is the small gas tank and limited range. Never had a problem on even my 883 Sportsters with two-up riding, and I never experienced any wobble on the freeway. That said, the Dyna was far more comfortable on the freeway and could ride all day. Excellent bike.

I have an 04 Sportster Custom, 4.5 gall tank. Mine came with the skinny 21" front tire, but now have a fatter 21". In either case never heard of any high speed wobble on any sportster. I have been on highway road trips many times where we cruise steady at 80mph smooth as silk.

After having been away from bike ownership for over 30 years, I bought a 2004 xl1200c last year. I got a really good deal on a great bike. I didn't buy a full-size because of cost and wondering if I'd want to keep riding. If anything bad happened, I wouldn't be out very much money. None of what's in the video has been my experience. First off, I have a 4.5 gallon tank. That's just smart shopping. Second, my bike has a 5 position rear shock setting for passenger adjustment. The owner's manual also says to increase the air pressure in the back tire. Stuff like this makes a difference, and if it doesn't, the wife needs to drop some serious poundage. And third, wind happens. The complaint is that the poster couldn't speed by 20KPH in a wind, which is not the fault of the bike. We have to ride the conditions. I had my bike over 70 MPH on the interstate last weekend and it did just fine, as always. All of this said, I'd prefer a Low Rider this year.

Your wobble could be improper air pressure between the tires...suspension especially rear shocks set to soft or not set up for riding style or rider weight.

Owned a Sportster 1200 XL back in 2003. Traded it in on a Road Glide the very same year. Kept the Road Glide till 2016. Although I had it for years, I sold it and bought another Sportster. Sportsters are fun man. Got older and tired of pushing a barge around. Sportsters are just awesome. Everybody loves a Sportster. My average trip is 200 miles on a weekend. Not a problem. Take it back and forth to work as weather permits. Can't beat it for the price either.

You can install the 3.4 gallon tank. You can tell the wife to ride her own, and you can relax when riding at speed, in order to decrease "wobble." I ride my 72 twenty five miles one way to work, and twenty five miles back home. Not once has she wobbled. Tire pressure set properly. Wheels balanced properly and you shouldn't have any issues.

I own a 2016 72 14 or 16" ape hangers, shortys, fuel pac and I agree about the gas priblem but heard they make bigger tanks..been through a rain storm gone 100mph on the freeway never had speed wabbled. With the adjustable shocks shouldnt have any problem riding double...

I own a 2002 Sportster 1200 with a 3.3 gallon tank. I don't know if it would fit but I think that would be the perfect solution. It adds another 30% capacity and actually looks better imo.

Fuel injection was standard in 2007 so it would have to be a 2007+ 3.3 gal tank. That's what's on my 883. Doesn't matter if I baby it or ride it hard, I get a consistent 45mpg (120 miles) before the fuel light comes on.

You could probably get more after market parts for a sporty than any other bike on the highway. They say the hardest bike to find is a stock sportster. I got a wide glide fork , chubby apes , mustang touring seat and adjustable shocks. Rides and handles great , with or without a passenger. 55 mpg with a carb.

I rode a motorcycle by myself for the first time in the mid 60s. It was a black Honda 50 - not a mini trail, pit bike style or moped, but a street legal black Honda 50. As I got older and bigger I became hooked on Harleys. I went in the Army in the 70s and got out in 1980. As soon as I got a job and saved a little money I bought a 78 Sportster from a friend. Early 80s? That was long before all these "Johnny come lately" riders realized how cool Harleys are. AND in my area, it was before the RUBs started buying up everything Harley Davidson produced. Mine was a good bike and had been on some LONG trips by the previous owner. ***Now the gist of this post*** I was NOT a long trip motorcycle person and these days, for medical reasons I'm still NOT a long trip motorcycle person! That is fine because I prefer looks over comfort and just want a bike to look good - whether practical or not. Think minimalist, bar hopper, bobber. etc... My preference for looks comes from friends that I had before going in the Army. They were serious Harley enthusiasts. These guys all rode bikes built the way Harley riders used to build bikes in the early days of chopping. They found old HD rigid frames (wishbone, straight leg), Panhead or Knuck motors, old factory springers, etc.... and built bikes. They did ALL of their wrenching!!! Anyone ever seen a drunk biker on a chopper built with a "45" motor and trans from a servicar? Think 2 wheel motorcycle with a reverse gear taking off backward from a traffic light! LOL Most people these days don't understand the old days/bikes like that. I have known old guys over the years that rode old rigid bikes all over the country. They realized the compromises and gladly lived with it! ***Now this is key info*** For riders these days, it should be common sense that if the seat is about an inch thick, the tank holds less than 2 gallons and there is a 21 inch Avon Speedmaster up front, then the bike is NOT made for comfort or suitable for long trips without compromises. Most all of the Harley riders these days bought their bikes because "everybody else" had a Harley and they wanted one. Then they added every bell, whistle and spinner doo-dad hanging on the wall at the HD dealer. They bought shiny covers to hide everything that could be covered up. They kept the bikes because they are fun and draw attention. In the 70s and 80s, if those same ppl had bought a Harley, they probably wld NOT have kept it very long! If they had bought one of the old rigid bikes, with points (anyone reading this still have a small feeler gauge on your key ring?), kick starters, carburetors and "ill manners", like the old school riders (I HATE using the term "old school" and absolutely refuse to call something "sick") had, they would not have ridden those bikes but a time or two. One flooded carb or fouled plug and there would be a For Sale sign on the bike!

I run an almost stock sporty XL1200C, not the 72, but still has slim tire in the front (but with the big tank). Never felt any vibration except maybe a little something when I go above 170 km per hour, and that doesn't happen everyday. I also put hapes on it aswell, never had any problems with my sporty.

Aluminum fuel canisters can mount on your 72, or install a larger tank? Your suspension handling issues would go away by just pulling back at higher speeds. And get your wife a nice bike too so you can have your own fun and not stress her life every second you’re riding? Best choice I’ve made. You just made excuses not to deal with it.

Dear Sir, I agree with your comments on the Sportster. I have a 1996 Harley Davidson Softail 80hp and as I get older it's getting too heavy for me in case it leans too far over and can't handle it. Nice H-D upgrade man! I like Sporties and had a 1,000cc XLH awhile back for 3 years. I agree that they are not two-up bikes and the little peanut tank, while always cool looking, was a pain at only holding 2.2 gallons of gas. Gas depots often knew me by name. Never had a death-wobble problem at any speed, even when bobbed with 6" over front forks. Apes, both big and mini, can make bikes prone to front-end wobble at higher speeds due to the 'sail factor' of the wind whipping past. A death-grip only makes such wobbling worse rather than letting centrifugal force and more throttle straighten it out.

What kind of wobble? A front end (wheel) wobble can happen with too much weight to the rear and certain rake and trail angles... You can check by leaning forward 1 up. If you lean way forward and the wobble stops then you know.

I love my 2016 sporty 72 and never had any problems. i also didnt buy a sporty with intentions of going cross country with it lol. you buy a bike like that because it looks amazing and it's fun running around town with it, I have gone on 2 hour road trips with it but each his own nice vid

a 72 is a bike for around town Trip's and are fine for short two up Trip's but it is a bike that just was not suited for you and why you bought it other than the cool factor makes little sense......now buy a Sportster and a set of air shocks with a Corbin seat with front and rear backrests and then you have a bike that would have made you happy and comfortable for either single or two up riding that handles well and mine would leave my buddies Softail and was a very enjoyable ride as an all around ride however I am going for an ultra for the times when me and my wife want to ride all day and my Sportster although capable in most situations will be designated for quick romps around town......I love the look of the 72 but just looking it over when they were first released I knew it would not be for me because the baby apes might look cool as does the wight diamond seat but skinny tires are too unstable but I did switch to whitewalls because of how they look on the 72

I ride two up all the time on a Sportster. The Sporster Custom with its 4.5 gallon tank solves the problem. No instability either. I did have a Sportster Low model that was unstable. Its steering was way too sensitive... I suspected the bearing head adjustment was wrong. Swingarm bushings or worn or loose engine mounts can also cause a wobble. All Harley Davidsons have the problem so beware and keep an eye on it. In fact, the Sportster typically has less problems than the bigger bikes do, but they all can have wobble if something is out of spec or worn.

had a 2012 HD iron 883 for 5 1/2 years loved the bike tons! but where I live there is all open road for long distant trips, and the iron wasn't cutting it for long distant trips 500+ miles would get sore because of only 5 gears and the 883 engine vibrating me to pieces lol, I could still do it , just wasn't comfortable , so I traded my bike in for the new 2017 HD lowrider S with the 110 cubic inch engine, and what really sold me besides the 6 speed tranny and engine was cruise control! can finally rest my right arm again on highways ! best bang for your buck in my opinion

I have a 72. I agree with the gas problem. I've come close to running out of fuel, but never had any of the other problems you mentioned. I'm going to hang on to mine, but looking at getting something with better distance capabilities.

Yeah, Hemi heads, high compression, valves & ports the size of a small block chevy, solid roller cams, 4.11 gear ratio, 480 lbs 75hp torque out the ass, no turn signal or bullshit of any kind and XLCH kickstart only. The 72 XLCH was made for one purpose. Not the bike for everybody but one of the baddest ever built. I have one and I love it and it wins every show I've ever entered.

I know guys will say I drove a thousand miles on my sportster. Yeah yeah and you can do that on a ten speed as well. The question is rider comfort and enjoying the ride. If I gave you two bikes to go on a thousand mile trip and it was a 72 or Road Glide you choose the Road Glide. I’m thinking of getting a second bike and I’m torn between spending money on a Dyna Wide Glide at $12,000 or a 72 in Gold Flake at $8,000? The sportster certainly lacks any form of suspension but the wide glide isn’t a night and day riding smoother ride. The wide Glide with the 103 has more power but the 72 is a fun little bike throw some apes on her and a tall sissy bar and you have a mini chopper look going. I could never have a 72 as my only bike because of the riding I do but for around town he’ll yeah why not

I have a '15 XL1200CP (mini-apes, forwards, Mustang Wide Solo seat, H-D Convertible windshield). I'm 67 and use my "bar hopper" to ride Chicago to Sturgis (900 miles); both ways in 25-30 hours. Did the same ride with the same setup, except mids, on my '98 XLH1200.

The 72 is style over comfort. The Tank I can understand it being a downer. A 3.2 would be better. BTW the Paint is awesome. Passenger comfort is minimum and probably not fun for the back seat. My Roadster cuts wind. Almost a 48 tire size with good thick forks/suspension. My Roadster had a Postage Stamp Seat and my knees were above my hips so I put a HD Tall Boy Seat on it. Hips would lock up and my legs got the Jimmy Cramps going down the road without it. I will be putting a 4.5 tank on my Roadster while turning it into a Go Fast Street Fighter. Shooting for 90HP/85TQ.

I have a '92 Sporty 1200 with the 2 gal peanut, I've had to go into reserve a few times, but never run out. The problem is you were waiting too long to start looking for gas. I top off the fuel if I'm not sure where I'm heading, just so I know I have a good 60 miles and I fuel up nearly every time I ride just to be sure. Stopping for gas is just a chance to show off your bike more. Also you could've strapped a fuel bottle to your bike for the long rides. Since the 1950's many Sportsters have had the 2 gal peanut tank, not to mention countless choppers and bobbers throughout the decades. It's iconic.

Fully agree... and mine is unstable at speed too... I have a new Forty Eight with mags... and yes the wind is not a friend of the Sportsters. This is my 3rd Sportster and they seem to be all the same. My 48 is just bloody worse with an incredible hard rear suspension. Also not a bike you buy for riding long trips... it a Sportster!

This is Earl again after a year ago. Today I have two Harleys which are 02 softail standard and 04 fatboy softail (the bigger stuff) but back in 1988 to 1997 I did own a used 1977 sportster shovel 1000 cc. Lightweight? Not harldy not that one as somehow it was literally heavier than any fatboy or even the breakout of today. I don't know how but it did!! It was all original with aluminum spoked front wheel and chome spoked rear wheel. On the gas tank (peanut tank it came with) was changed out by me. I bought a used 5 gallon tank and it was a harley tank but wasn't the split tank and it even had the two gas caps on it. It fit on that sportster. I then got larger tooth sprocket for the front I believe in a 25 tooth that was I think 3 teeth larger to help with final gear rpms. Rear sprocket couldn't be reduced because the factory one was pop riveted to the brake drum those used as it has rear mechanical brakes. It was GREAT! But useless for the highway even with the 5 gallon tank I installed. Reason is is because at 60mph the thing ran at 5000 RPMs. I cant go with that because anything like that will fly apart before long. But light weight???!!! NO!! I swear it was heavier than any fatboy of today. It also never wobbled and that I think is based on your wheels beig balanced possibly because mine did not. As far as an in town bike that you never get above 50mph it was wonderfull and heavy as I said earlier and even had a two passenger seat with a wrap down rear fender. I wish I would have kept it now because I'm older now and only ride local

Don't have a 72, but I have the 1200 Custom from 2006. Has the skinny spike wheel front end of the 72, but regular bullhorn bars, slightly raised. I never experienced any wobble, even at 130 km/h (80mph) on the southern French A9 Highway with massive gusts of wind. Maybe it's the apes? Cuz I've taken this thing in all sort of conditions, from snow to blazing heat and storms, and it felt pretty stable. Two up, yeah it felt cramped, but about as cramped as on a Dyna. Granted mine has an upgraded seat and Progressive 412 shocks on it, so the ride is smooth. Mine does not have any range issue because the Custom has a 4.3 gallons tank, which is amazing. Only issue I have is the bike feels a bit cramped. I like skinny bikes, but the pegs would definitely need to be at least two inches more forward than they are. It's a small Harley, that's for sure. But hey, I took mine on long trips with no problems, even tho it was packed like a mule with camping stuff.

I agree on all but the instable part. I have one and tend to haul ass at times. 90mph ish, but I did change my tires a long time ago to the super grippy michelin commander 3. I went with a slightly taller from tire. I love the bike the biggest killer for me is that tank. I want to find a 3.3 peanut from a nightster or iron and have it matched just so I can get at least 100mp tank.

Traded in the Sportster for a Softail. Traded the Softail in next summer for a Bagger. All due to rider comfort, tank size and passenger comfort. I miss the light and whippy ride of the Sportster, I miss the badass blacked out look of the Softail but ultimately feel the bagger is the best overall for my type of two-up highway riding. Wish I could afford to keep all three!

I mean... I have a 2015 72, mine doesn't even wobble at 110 mph, and with a peanut tank what were you expecting!? I took it for a 7 hour round trip ride, yeah I had to stop at about every 80 miles but so what, it's a great bike. I have a passenger too most of the time and even she has no complaints. I scrape peg all the time, I have never even had a speed wobble, so maybe your frame was at fault there. My brother rode from Denver to LA on an older sporty with a 2 gallon peanut tank so to each his own, maybe you need more comfort like a trike or something

I love my Nightster, I've never had any problems. I've gone to 110mph with no wobble, it has a 120 mile distance with a 2.3g tank, i have been on 1000 mile trips. My Dad has a dyna and my sister has a softail, i dont like either, they both don't have the agility that i like.

But Very seldom do you ever come across someone that rides that only rides around the city and calls it a day. Especially HD riders. These bikes were made for the open rode and exploring. You got a beautiful Dyna now though man. Glad it worked out for ya. I always advice my friends to just skip the Sportsters and start on a Dyna or a Softail if they can.

I would love a Dyna eventually but I think the Sportster is plenty. I'll never do a cross country trip and I don't ever ride 2 up, so a bigger bike seems like a lot of expense for not much gain.

I ride my 72 7 days a week for most the year (even in the winter when the roads arent slick and it aint snowing) its just preference, I ride everywhere and I go on long trips too. I gotta gas up more but that doesnt bother me, if i know im gonna be in the middle of nowhere, just strap a gas can to the sissy bar its no problem. my brother rode from Denver to LA on an 04 sporty with a 2 gallon peanut tank to go to born free. I guess its all about endurance

I live in Nevada and 120 is the minimum. with all the mountains and constant grading in many valleys, you can cut a good amount out of the highway mpg. I looked at a sportster 72 and it's just not a bike for this area. rain isn't a common problem, but when it does, all streets are basically oil slicks and it's windy a lot of the time, especially in higher elevations. it is, however, a cool looking bike. but like you said, it's got everything to make for a wobbly bumpy ride. they should have contracted Sugar Bear for the front ends, his stuff never wobbles.

There is a video put posted by a Harley dealership on choosing the right Harley. The bike tells you what it's for. The peanut tank tells you that it is for urban transport not for touring...that is obvious. The small frame tells you it's for rider only...no passenger. That is obvious too.

Harley sells the 1200T sportster touring bike and it's on the same frame. As previously mentioned, when I bought the bike I only did city riding, and short distances so it fit my riding style. Things changed, and I decided I wanted to start riding it how a motorcycle should be ridden, and it doesn't work for that.

Morons. Rode my first 1200 Arizona to Florida. Completely stable. Small tank? Yeah. 80 miles better find gas. Now I have a 2005 classic. Bigger tank 4.4 gallons. With good tires serviced forks and new shocks great touring bike. Rock solid dependable. I'm 65 now and honestly wouldn't be able to deal with a dresser.

I bought a new 883 in 2003 and rode it 10 years. Had 16inch apes and looked a lot like what is now the 72. All your points are true accept I never had a wobble issue. The 883 would get 120 miles before reserve. Rode it 400 miles on a road trip and damn near killed me. Never took a trip ever again. Now on a 2002 dyna wide glide. Has the old school chopper look and rides much much better and tons more comfortable. I wish I bought the WG new back then

Definitely go Dyna you won't regret it. I rode a sportster for 10 years and now have a 2002 dyna wide glide. Much more comfortable and smooth riding ( new wide glide is quite different). I wish I bought one 10 years ago

No testimony can ever replace actually riding for a few hours. Beginners fret too much - just npick one & ride. Many big twins are uncomfortable after a few hours also. If your passenger is 'sturdy' then opt for a fitting solution. Big tanks, other road amenities are just good planning sense. Time TT riding (Tavern to Tavern) vs. over the road use - weigh out the compromise. Better yet, get both types of bikes!

My brother had a 48 for awhile and it was definitely more stable at speed due to the fat front tire. But honestly the 72 is an amazing bike... It's just best suited for what it's made for. Bar hopping, short rips around town. Definitely not a good interstate/highway machine

Kelvin A. Çéspedes i have a 2016 48. it's got better shocks and beefier forks. I never adjusted the shocks and ride 2-up with about 340 lbs. it doesn't bottom out. the stock seat is beautiful but sucks. I put a sundowner on it and it feels like a completely different bike. take one for a test ride. I don't regret buying a 2016. I've loved them since they came out but prior years had some suspension issues and chronic bottoming out. but I'd advised buying a used one and putting progressive shocks on it. you'll save some dough.

Trust me, thought about it. But I had the hard candy custom paint and that would be difficult to match up. Very viable option though for a sporty owner wanting some more range.

Harleys are cool, they are iconic. I've owned three of them and had rides on dozens of others. I LOVED my Harley Davidsons and lavished love care and attention on them but each of them fucking HATED me and all of them left me stranded, walking, because something got loose and either fell off or stopped working. No other make of motorcycle I have owned has done that, they all got me home.

If a person must occasionally use a peanut tank Harley to go on a lengthy road ride they should have two saddle bags and carry 3 quart gas containers on each side. Buy the narrow taller plastic gas containers. I would even do this on my 02 softail and it has a 5 gallon gas tank if I went on raid trips

Gas...always carry a spare fuel tank with you on long trips. I have taken many trips over many mile on a rigid frame with a narrow springer front end pushed by a '73 shovelhead/kicker. The longest trip was Philadelphia to New Orleans down the east coast. No gas issues, no wobble issues, just a sore ass from riding a ridged that far. There are several ways to fix wobble...hi-pro bearings, steering stabilizers, etc.

You bought the wrong Sportster is all. Superlow: 4.5 gallon tank Passenger seat and pegs (the frame is fine for two up and suspension, it is all in the setup and tire pressure) I've had my Superlow up to 100 mph hour before I felt a little instability and I believe that is from the tombstone windscreen. No wobble at all!

I live in the American Southwest and that small tank would be a pain in the ass. You wouldn't have a choice but lug a gas jug with ya if you were to head out of town. It's pretty common to be 100+ miles from a gas station. I dug that bike and how it looked, but that little peanut wouldn't get it done in the more sparsely populated regions.

I own an Indian so I'm not a HD die hard although I have owned multiple Sportsters and other Harleys . That being said I feel your criticism or dislike or nervousness about the Seventy Two may be somewhat more to do with your skills and preferences as a rider than the bike itself. In particular it really makes me laugh to hear people complain about the range of the bike when they bought a bike that they KNEW had a tiny peanut gas tank! Really what were you expecting dude? My personal solution for that would be an after market 4 gallon tank if you want to tour on it. Same situation with the thin front tire and raked forks....YEH, no shit, it's not going to improve handling but I think with a little attitude and the magic words "Just handle it man!" you probably could have...well...handled it. Rear suspension not so good you say.....hmm this is a bike with no rear seat or pegs so in standard form not even a pillion passenger or lots of travel gear on the back....so I find it a little hard to believe it is that lousy - but hey maybe it is. I know my last Superglide (a 97 model) had lousy suspension and the 2015 Scout's is definitely nothing to write home about BUT not as bad as the Superglide (and in both cases I'm talking about with lots of travel gear tied on the back seat). Sure you shouldn't HAVE to replace the rear suspension on any bike but if you love the bike it's not such a big sacrifice is it? (especially with ALL those after market parts for Sportsters - unlike Indian Scouts! - sure it's gradually getting better but no where near as good as for HDs) My final thoughts are these: (1) the 1200 Sporty motor is bullet proof due to being an Evo and the truth is it is basically SUPERIOR in terms of reliability to anything else HD make at the time of writing this (2) the Seventy Two is a basic retro style bike with the potential to do a lot of different things IF you conclude it is worth the money and effort. Personally I'd love to have one in stripped back form for use around town and then a spare 4 gallon tank, big leather saddle bags, dual seat, sissy bar etc. to go touring on it. And YES I would go long distance touring on one (not with a pillion passenger though) because they are a bullet proof bike with real credibility and character. And for those who say they are a "girl's bike" know that Sonny Barger rode one for years....bet you would not have told Sonny he was riding a girl's bike would you?

Fair enough.....I'm just making the argument that Sportys are great bikes....its kind of frustrating owning an Indian Scout when there are so few after market parts available (unlike Sportsters). I think a second hand Sporty 1200 leaves a lot of scope for customizing it the way you want to. I actually think they are a much under rated bike...even Harley Davidson under rates them....otherwise they would have stretched the frame by a couple of inches and added a 6 speed gearbox years ago.
