Save £15k and buy a Gen 1 GR Yaris. Whilst the P1 is great, you can get an Impreza STI which is 90% as good as it for a fraction the P1’s current price. The GR being more modern means its more refined, has many more mod cons and is actually more capable in slow corners than the P1. It really is a hoot to drive. The GR now also has the rally success and heritage to match the Subaru. Both cars have 3 WRC manufacturers titles.

I could not agree more, it just plain silly to compare a old car with a current model. £40k for one of these that’s been thrashed by blokes in white socks for years or £15k to £20k for a car a handful of years old with Toyota service history, it’s just not a valid comparison.

Save 15k more and get a Spec C or similar while they're still cheap, very sturdy cars just need to protect the underside for daily use. On modern tyres they'll outclass both others.

Bit of a silly title. As your classic car purchase show there alway so much more to spend on a classic car. Ok if your a mechanic but it can be never-ending. @@gazzafloss It is just one person's personal opinion on a preference though. What 'forms' that opinion. The Yaris obviously has a lot more modern creature comforts, and is a lot easier to drive quickly. An older car like this, requires more upkeep, and more driving skill to get the best out of it, and for real petrolheads, that means more fun. Comparing 25 year old cars to brand new ones is a bit pointless really, as they are completely different. What is best for one person is different to 'best' for another .....

My Chemist drives a couple of the high-end turbos, with one painted in the rally team colours, being the full box and dice. His other one is painted 'Sleeper Blue' Vroom, Vroom. If KZbin were around in 2001, I reckon you might’ve been telling people to get an Integrale instead of an Impreza. I mean I get it, it’s a legend of a car, but it’s also well over 20 years old now. Finding parts for a first gen Impreza is even more impossible than finding the car itself in decent condition. And even if you luck out with one that’s been meticulously maintained, how much life do you think it realistically has left? Things break, things rust, things get brittle over time, it’s basic entropy. If you’re buying it for a project car, that’s a different story. But for those who missed out on the older rally homologation specials to own as a daily driver, it’s a miracle that the GRY even exists, this may be the last car of its kind we get.

Owned a 320bhp P1 for 3 years and a GR Yaris for 2.5 years. P1 is more undiluted and raw but ultimately a watered down Impreza Type R with all the good bits taken off, especially the quick rack steering which totally transforms the car. GR is more refined but equally as fast and capable. Even in stock form a GR Yaris would stay with this modded P1.

You should try an original legacy turbo from the mid 90s. As a teenager when dad test drove one with me in the back i couldn't believe the performance. Only had just over 200bhp but light. Compared to the E36 320 we had at the time it was lightening fast when that turbo kicked in. Had it been me signing the cheque I'd have bought it and then just hoped there was lots of stuff to overtake! Then there was the stock WRX. That was quick enough for the road. 5 seconds to 60 is not slow! Test drove them as well but the legacy wowed more because it looked like a sleepy nissan bluebird or toyota Carina but had the performance of a super car. Also a bit less refined which made it feel faster than it really was! A real Q car. Be great to try one on your channel if one still exists. Sadly whilst practical it wasn't what you would call a refined cruiser compared to the BMW so it got replaced with an E36 328i. A car that was still exciting because that straight 6 sounded lovely when revved. I'm glad i grew up in that era because modern engines just don't have that charisma anymore even though technically they are superior.

I agree. I had a turbo legacy estate . And easy to get into too- with nice wide front doors, unlike the Impreza. The Turbo Legacy was the Best car I’ve ever had ( I’m an Alfa/ Fast Ford man at heart. The only weakness? Fuel consumption, and a gapping gap between 2nd and 3rd gear, which meant that going up hill you were either screaming in second gear or not really on cam/ turbo boost in 3rd. With snow tyres on, the car was a beast on snow, and it had such a nice steering feel ( low effort at low speed, all feel at high speed ). And bear in mind it held the 24 hour speed record at the time ( as did a GTV6 perhaps 10 years before).

No gps,no anti lock brakes, no lane assistance, auto braking or any of the awful electrical nannies in newer machines. They feel understeery, but PUSH it hard. The overseer comes predictably, particularly lift-off, and it's great, because it just takes a little throttle to pull it out. Very fun if you go really hard, which is why so many people loved it. Lots of race drivers owned them, I'm told, rather than the WRX because of the ABS which (when it's your job) makes it easy and still fun. Maybe not this exact model, but they all have that same understeer into easily controlled oversteer thing, which is massively fun! These are going to make money. You'll buy it, drive it hard, and then sell it for the same money if kit more. Hold it and you'll make money imo. They're dying man! Dying. They're all ruined. If you get one that's sorted? Drove a P1 from 2007-2009. loved driving it but hated being accused of being a boy racer all the time. Don't think the image is as bad now , would love to get one again but not for 40k. Currently drive V10 M6, much quicker, more comfortable, half the price but with the P1 but I got a lot more out of driving the P1.

Not really a fair comparison. A GR Yaris is a fast fun daily driver. The Impreza is a wonderful car but it's very much a classic that won't fair well as a daily. You would still need another car for A to B. The Yaris does it all.

@I understand your point but ever more stringent laws have made modern cars very complex and unreliable, very costly to diagnose and fix if they go wrong. Peak reliability probably occurred 20y ago. My daily is a 25y Isuzu Trooper, it’s dead reliable and easy/cheap to run and maintain (I admit to also running a GRY, but there are now reports of catastrophic engine failures due to LSPI, a case in point). As regards his videos, I like them.

Frankly the Evo 9 was the pick and still would be the pick. The Sti a close 2nd. The Yaris didnt “do it” for me. But that may be because im 14 years older

For all the GR lovers, here's some more food for thought. If you buy any new Toyota (does not matter what model), Toyota will collect your driving data (as well as your cell phone data if you connect via Android or Apple) and sell it to data harvesters, who will then resell your data to insurance companies. Then watch your insurance premiums go up.

Thank you for this. Each to his own, but I like to feel a bond with a car. I don't get that with today's cars. However good they are, and they do perform so well, I just... don't. Sterile throwaway conveniences. You're not expected to invest in them and grow a friendship, you just use them and discard them after five years or so. They don't love you and likewise. It's like investing. You don't care what you invest in, as long as it makes you money. My last washing machine lasted over twenty years. This new one won't and I couldn't care less.

That's always the caveat with these kind of "buy a 1980's Ferrari for the price of a brand new Supra" kind of comparisons. The older car may be more fun and more prestigious, but it may also break on you every month and you will start having trouble to even acquire parts. Probably OK if you can afford a secondary toy car and don't need to rely on it every day.
