Im certain some missing hikers are taken amd/or buried by brown bears. Especially because they are primarily omnivorous scavengers, so a kicker that is already dead is also a target. Im sure some are attacked, but hikers that die for any reason, suicide, accident, natural causes, foul play, etc can be vanished by hungry bears.

there's 2-4-8 it varies yearly in northern america. brown bear attacks are regular in eastern Russia. brown bear's don't want people in the Backcountry. if you startle a grizzly or encounter a sow with Cubs it's more likely than not she will attack you.

I am not a hunter, but, common sense tells me that an intelligent person would not go up against Ali nor Tyson, in their prime, armed only with a tennis racket. So why , in the name of SWEET Jesus, would anyone go up against a BEAR with a 6 inch can of any kind of spray? I would need a gas mask and a tanker truck full of........oh, I don't know maybe ether!! After listening to many of your stories, I haven't heard ONE where 'bear spray' saved anyone! My conclusion is, bear spray is not the solution!

I live on the east coast where we only have black bears. Even then, I do not solely trust bear spray. I wouldn’t trust anything less than a 357 magnum with hard cast 180 grain game ammo for defense out here.

In recent years I've read of bear and boar attacks in Europe and North America against hunters or happy go lucky trail hikers. Some areas make it hard to carry a firearm. So I thought what did our ancestors use against boars and bears? Spears which they also used as walking sticks. So began the process of the ideal spear design. The shaft length was the hardest to pin down as too short or too long would be a handicap. For me at 6'4" a seven footer seems about right. For material I like hickory but thick-walled aluminum tube would likely work as well. The spearhead is a pretty basic tool and there's many dozens of examples from antiquity for design inspiration. 12" long. two sharp edges and about 3"width. Some of the ancient cast bronze spearheads also had the cross-bar cast into the spear unit. Our ancestors learned an angry animal will slide along the spear and whip your butt before it dies. So best to stop it so claws or tusks stay away from your skin. Next, what about safety with your sharp blade. You could carry it sheathed on your belt/harness and attach it when needed, especially if it had a quick attach design. Having it attached to the shaft seems the most prudent way. But you don't want to get sliced so a sheath is in order but what design or materials. A simple leather sheath held on by friction would work, as long as there's a pull cord to yank it off. I was thinking of a Kydex based unit like a clamshell, "open" on one side with a pull cord on the other. The base of the Kydex sheath would extend onto the spear shaft, so it will slide down or break away (slip off) as it penetrates the bear. This is what happens when you retire and do deep research into genealogy with its associated history, and like to come up with practical solutions to problems. ADD: I understand there's some guys who do "primitive hunting" against the feral pigs in the southern US. That's a hobby for a much younger guy. 🧐🥸

@DaneAxe6465, I agree with you on the length but I think the length would prevent you from skewering yourself, so the length of the shaft would have a double safety effect. I would definitely want a cross bar for optimal penetration but keep the animal away from you, like you said. Materials wise, Alder is a very light wood and I would think it you weren't going to throw it, but us it more like a pike, then a heavier spear my not help much. In addition, a butt that you can plant in the dirt against a charging animal, like the Zagya, (See the Sasha Zimel episode on Scary Animal Attacks YT channel). Zimel killed around 300 jaguars by hand using only a Zagya and a bow and arrow. Seven foot long does seem optimal length as long as it is light enough weight for point agility, to hit moving targets, etc.

Anders Brost, the bicycle salesman, should have known that he would have problems with the area grizzlies. Bears, in general, prefer a Unicycle: they are a better fit for their short rear legs and allow them to ride upright while eating honey and peanut butter sandwiches. Sometimes I wonder if people who come to Montana from elsewhere ever really understand our Bears.

Agree, bear spray might have been helpful. Never leave home without it or at the very least, .45 caliber side piece. The possible question of how experienced the friend was is a factor imo. It’s fortunate that it stopped its attack and moved on, that alone saved his life. I would imagine it views him as a competitor most likely but other factors may have been in the mix. Lucky break, I’d be saying extra prayers each night going forward. It wasn’t your time yet.

We have caught her on trail cam 3 times in the last 5 weeks, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., so we are avoiding that little canyon. We don’t want to disturb her.

I think humans are pushing into their territory. I also think there’s a lot more bears out there then what they claim. I’m not sure bear spray would have prevented anything, but it might not have hurt, we will never know. As far as doing something different, I don’t think so. He was teaching his friend how to hunt, which requires them to be very quiet, but alert. He probably should have got to the ground and covered his head and neck. His pack might have helped🤷🏻‍♀️. You know, play dead. You never know at all.

.45 ACP is not really the pinnacle of power and performance however it’s the most commonly available large caliber pistol ammunition, so a good choice. There are many hotter specialty rounds available.

Actually the 45acp is well subpar even against humans. The FMJ is pathetic in any pistol caliber. The 45acp can do halfway decent with a hot load and an excellent bullet like the Corbon XPD, but that's on humans. It doesn't penetrate far enough for anything bigger than a cougar or wolf. The 45acp is handicapped by its limited max psi. The above is based on my years in LE and crime lab/scene. Lately I've been going through videos on current trends on dangerous game backup handguns. I've been a big fan of the .357 Mag since the 1970s and dropped a thick muley buck with my short barreled .44 Mag. But the speed of bear attacks really make me question using a single action Ruger whether .44 Mag or .45 Colt (hotter than standard). Plus the larger Rugers are heavy. I've had 10mm on my mind for a few years. After noticing a number of guides or AK residents moving to 10mm I finally got a new S&W MP 2.0. It fits my hand perfectly and instinctive shooting is plenty good for point shooting. Mags hold 15 rounds and its a lot lighter than my big bores. Now to figure out which Buffalo Bore load to get, they have a lot more choices than I thought.

On any given day, you can get mauled by blackbear as well brains……. all Bears are wild regardless of what your top the chances may be less, but that’s just individual basis. I have no idea how to answer your questions concerning the black bear attack on one individual on a fishing boat. The bear couldn't be disduaded or distracted by salmon meat thrown overboard as a compensation. The entire attack makes no sense. It turns out the male bear was greatly undernourished . That's the only clue , as far as I can tell, as to the bizarre & unusual behavior of this bear. Nature is sometimes entirely unpredictable!

As far as the hunting party are concerned, they should have had more people and at least stand guard over them as they processed the meat. You have to have a firearm at the ready in bear country. Bear spray is pretty much useless against them in any weather. It's a false sense of security. Likewise, what food is a gun if your hands are slippery and full of blood and guts?

Can't believe those last hunters dug up the elk remains to take out. Don't think I would want the meat after a grizzly had been feeding on it and rolling in it. Also, a .45 is definitely NOT the "pinnacle" of sidearms for grizzlies. If anything, it is considered too light of a cartridge to be adequate for the job. It is recommended that a bullet energy of 1000 foot pounds is required to take a deer ethically. A 45's maximum energy at the muzzle is less than 1/2 that power. A 44 mag at twice the energy of a 45 is considered a barely acceptable minimum cartridge for grizzly. A 454 casull on up to a 500 s&w is what you require for dependable stopping power. Of course, you could get lucky and kill a bear with a .22 or even a big stick, but I would never count on having that much luck:)

@PeterOlbrisch8970, I agree. The government is reintroducing the bears or letting them overpopulate in habitats missing their main source of fats, salmon. They should really focus on reestablishing salmon runs in every body of water as possible before increasing grizzly numbers. The ripple effect on other species is too significant to do it the way they are doing it now.

@DBache, I appreciate the sentiments but prolonging animal suffering is anthithetical to hunting and unethical. Most hunters aim for a rapid death for the animal they are hunting. When it comes to bantitheticalears, they just don't die easy most of the time.

@@scarybearattacks Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it👍. A quick clean shot is fair enough, when stalking a Bear. A quick clean shot when a Bear is charging is unlikely. What really annoys me is when stalking hunters shoot/aim for the shoulders of the Bears to incapacitate them. Then to finish them off who knows how much later? The pain of the broken/smashed to bits bones would be excruciating especially when it tries to move I imagine. Some Bears are immobilized some stagger off into the scrub to suffer for God knows how long. I can't understand the pleasure hunters get when hunting for sport. Anyone can pull a trigger.

I think the guy never hit the bear with his shor and I'm glad he didn't also I think if he did hit bear with the shot I think it may have been a minor flesh wound and the bear actually survived it because of how minor it was its refreshing to have a story where both bear and hunter survived virtually unscathed

I think when people venture into the wild with intentions to kill an animal they are taken a big risk. It is like someone coming into our home with the intent to kill. These animals are only protecting their environment. I am sad for anyone so badly injured by an attack. I just wish people didn’t hunt.

I dont believe in euthinizing the bears for 1 attack. Ofcourse l dont want to see more people attacked but unless a bear starts attacking people frequently, shouldnt be killed. Carry bear spray and know how to use it! Not necessary to kill bear. All Bears are not hibernating, because of what occured in Alaska. Not too long ago, a law was passed in Alaska allowing hunters to kill sows with their cubs inside their dens. Males are protecting temporary dens they have. They don't feel safe in dens anymore, that's why their moving around so much, and into areas with people. Their trying to survive! If a law is passed allowing people to jump off the highest bridge, would they? Most bear attacks, you won't have time to use a rifle or gun. And if your lucky enough to get off a shot, if you don't kill it, it will kill you. Bear spray works, and animals don't blame the person using it. Similar to training a cat. If your cat gets on the table, countertops, and you spray the cat with water from a waterbottle, the cat won't blame you and will learn to stay off those areas. My brother didnt use that method with his cat, instead he yelled and tapped the cats butt. His cat, crawled into his car through a window that was down a few inches, and pooped all over his car! I laughed! Also male bears territory, protecting his family, will attack. Elk hunters are not on the dinner bell. Their protecting their territory . Bear spray works, if used correctly. Bears know what guns are, and can smell them. Bears dont know what bear spray is. Bears can track, even after a heavy rain storm. They can also track vehicles. Bears think they are being hunted. Learn how to communicate with a bear. Dont smile and show your teeth, that is a sign of agression. Always stand your ground with a male bear. Always. If you communicate one thing wrong, a bear will attack, since they think the person is a threat. Best to take an extra person hunting, to keep watch, and carry bear spray and know how to use it. I think the only time bear spray wont work, is when you have an injured bear.

I think if we are able to go into their territory then why can't they do the same? It's because of us that food has become scarce especially hunters so it makes sense that they would be forced to come into our farmlands and more populated areas in order to survive. They eat to live, we live to eat 😢

@KaylahJames1093, the more they come around or into towns the more they are exposed to things that alienate them from what makes them better as a species. The overabundance of food and lack of competition between individual bears does actually help them. I do enjoy seeing bears and only have their perpetuation in mind with what I think.

Anders shouldnt have had his rifle slung over his shoulder with the safety on in bear country. He should have had that rifle by his side and ready to fire at a moments notice. Just another dummy who deserved what he got for his lack of awareness of his surroundings.

If they were just killing the elk for sport, why did they take precautions to care for the meat? It was while they were dressing the elk to preserve the quality of the meat that the bear attacked. I'm not certain you've thought this through. But hey, that's just me. I don't mean to be intrusive...

@Troybowen3024, I know that sport hunting is controversial today, but subsistence hunting seems to be more acceptable to many people. I am a subsistence hunter. No horns or antlers on my walls. A recent trend in areas where tribes still live on their lands in Africa, South America, and SE Asia is to have the tribes issue permits to trophy hunters to come in and take out individual animals that the tribes deem hostile or dangerous to them. The tribe gets a huge amount of revenue from this and they let their farms go fallow and back to nature, allowing more wildlife habitat. To me, that is a win/win.
