Idris Elba has starring roles in two new movies - I take on his turn as a djinn in George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing and a father protecting his kids from a lion in Beast.

I saw *Three Thousand Years of Longing* last night, and the vibe was a lot like that of a stage play--but with fairytale flashback vignettes. The lead performances are great, but it's definitely a different energy than presented in the trailers

I ended up liking it too. But I think I would’ve liked it more if the trailer jus presented it to be as it was instead of kinda misleading us ina way with the energy of the trailer compared to the movie itself like u said

it's kinda sad when the studio marketing team decides to do that because it can alienate an audience a bit and it can lead to the movie getting harsh criticisms when it's not warranted. There have been a few movies that have recieved poor or mixed reviews when if the movie was simply presented as what it is it would have done better. I know some studios do this to recoup money upon opening but it's a really horrible strategy to purposely deceive people to get them through the door. Some movies are hard to categorize if it's very different but I think there are a lot of indie or small budget movie trailers that seem to handle trailer subjects just fine so it's very doable. I remember when people went to see the Village thinking they were getting a scary horror movie based on the trailers when it's more of a slow burn mysterious suspense film. It could have been easily reframed to reflect that and I think it wouldn't have been better recieved then it was at the time. I actually liked the movie for the most part loved the music even more but I don't mind a slow burn suspense.

I would say it ended up being more of a introspective fairy tale romance drama that explores in details the Djinn's centuries of love and lost, that finds a kindred spirit and longing within a lonely British Narratology professor. I thankfully dug it and appreciate Miller for doing something entirely different, but totally understand why it will definitely disappoint others, especially based off of the misleading marketing campaign behind it.

Three Thousand Years of Longing was definitely my thing. No chance in hell it’s making its money back, but I was happy. The pure cinematic ambition got me swept up in it, my only real issue being that it kinda peters out at the end. I hope it finds its audience somewhere. Also, I’d just like to add that I think it’s neat that when you highlight a specific part of the movie, you try to name the person in charge of that department. I don’t think I’ve seen another channel do that, and most people just end up praising the director alone. Idk, I just think that’s neat.

agreed, I like ''bottle'' narrative where is a few characters talking in closed space, only issue is I think from the last Djini story and the real time story weren't that good.

Using the general term "shot in Africa" has to stop being used so often. Research should be done to what country or countries, or specific areas are being represented. You never hear the filming locations referred to as shot in North America, or South America, or Europe, etc. I know it's not technically wrong to use Africa since it is being filmed on that continent. However, being specific goes a long way for different countries, regions, and sub-cultures to gain their identity.
@RominaJones
@RominaJones 2 жыл бұрын
100%, Africa is a whole entire continent. I too don’t see why folks can’t learn which specific country or think it is not part of the equation when referring to a location. It’s a small but striking thing to me and interesting when others note it too. Always enjoy Dan’s reviews just noting a too common turn a phrase that was true but not entirely accurate. I know Dan likes to be informative and accurate, adopting that one extra step for anyone will always serve them well.

@@SimonBuchanNz Fair point. "Never" shouldn't have been my choice of words. I've heard them used before as well. My overlying point is that Africa is a blanketed term used more than the others. That said, I happen to be using this example but specificity should be applied to all continents as well.

Saw "Beast" last weekend and it was okay overall. This movie was made for your AMC A-List! If you don't have to shell out $15-$20, go for it! It's a good theatrical experience, with very active camera work and thunderous sound design to kick your butt! Seeing "Three Thousand..." tomorrow. Expectations have been tempered by all the reviews, including Dan's here, so I'll just go and zen out. I love Tilda and Idris, so I'm sure I'll be at least somewhat entertained. `

@@MatalicMan it can be a very great movie but if the trailer implies the movie was one thing but it's actually another that's just bothersome. a trailer should capture how/what a movie is so viewers can decide if they want to see it. such misleading trailers aren't just annoying but bad marketing IMO because the folks who'd like the movie how it is - not how it is advertises - may not get to see it as they wouldn't know about it.

Yes the message at the end of 3,000 Years is a little ambiguous but it's about selfish love, fear of abandonment and mature love which is like a wish come true, if carefully protected. But would have been nice if Miller had wrapped it up a little more for the audience to get take home point without having to think about it for a while and hope you got the point.

3000 years..... I enjoyed it. For a fantasy film, I thought the end was realistic in human terms. By the second wish you know how it's going to go... fate is sealed. It certainly made me think about the dangers and responsibilities of even one wish, trickster or not. Technically, effects, acting, historical backdrops quite excellent. Could I wish for a better film? I would be afraid my wish would conjure a different film, and I would not like it as much as I liked this one, even though I'd give this (loath 7).... 6/10. Btw, the trailers did NOTHING for the film. I will watch this film again.

It delivers a story that has purpose and hooks the audience with a psychological thrill and beautiful fast-pace scenery within the first 45mins-1hr of the movie. But towards the the last 50 mins of the movie it sort of switches pace drastically and becomes a slow burn to a somewhat satisfying conclusion. As a comicbook & cinema fan, Marvel & Dc, who had Easter eggs on the movie, producers should go and see this movie as homework asap. The stories were from the gens pov, he is the main character. Theme was tragic Romance. Anyone raised on a deit of superhero movies will not care for cinema with a story that is not a setup for another movie.

The good news is that the movie certainly doesn't fall in the action genre however the bad news is that the movie is a total bomb come out with bad pacing and overindulgent dialogue that simply does not land. Also while I am a big fan of Idris Elba, I query the casting of him as a Djinn, which is of Arab/near East origin. Get in the lack of representation of Middle Eastern and Muslim actors, it would have been nice to have seen one cast for the role

Three Thousand Years of Longing is a movie that isn't usual in today's cinematic experience. Mediocre directors and editors today produce Rollercoaster rides with cheap thrills that pull you along and show you nice things but in the end you feel empty and take nothing with you. Movies today have nothing to say just cool tidy "experiences" for you to watch without you being invested in. This movie draws you into a story takes a love story and dives so deep into what a love story could be and does it so subtly this simpleton thinks it was meh!. It's dives DEEP into the important parts of a couples love story broad and heavy. It explains the serendipidy of love, its pitfalls, the whole experience of life before and after love in its entirety but doesn't beat you over the head with that complexity. Its a movie that seeps into you not some thick drowning. Not a scene or shot wasted here. This is a movie. @danmurrell your career has deadened your senses to film. This is 2 thumbs up. This reminds me of The Cell in some ways

I didn't like the story of "3000 Years of Longing", but the cinematography was beautiful, and the CGI usage. It's another slave story told by the Genie, over his time being enslaved. He is at the will of all who open it , and must obey, with some rules to follow from his own Genie rules of Granting Wishes. He hopes of being free from capture in the bottle, through wish fulfillment/manifestation. The movie was too long, and BEAST is wayyy better.

It’s a thinking persons movie, which won’t do well at all in the current Idiocracy that demands cgi superheroes with no content. ANd of course you compare it to Fury Road, you only want narrative drive, not meaning, literature, writing, content, character development, just violence. Bad review, doesn’t reflect well on you at all.

If you’d listened to what I said - I don’t compare this movie to Fury Road. I said people would likely walk in expecting a movie like Fury Road, which it isn’t. I consider myself a thinking person, I just wasn’t 100% on board with the movie.

@@DanMurrellMovies I didn’t watch the trailers, because I knew I would see the movie opening night regardless. However, I was excited at the possibilities from the description of a narratologist finding a djinn’s lamp. I imagined a tense, layered battle of wits between a genre-savvy academic who knew all the classic wish traps, and a possibly duplicitous djinn who had seen all of human history. Although I enjoyed the movie, I found Alithea’s passive, barely-questioning character to be disappointing, and the removal of consent reversal to actual love to be both not given enough narrative weight and to be absent of real chemistry. It’s a good story, but I don’t think it’s nearly as intelligent or meaningful as it thinks it is.

I liked Three Thousand Years of Longing. Could it be all in her mind like her childhood imagined friend. Is he’s a story she made up to fill her life with some love. I always thought that you can not wish for love.

I surprised my wife with 3,000 years last night (we like to not tell each other what move we are seeing). When Idras name came on the screen, she let out a disappointed ‘Is this Beast?’ and I laughed out loud.

Sounds like Arabian Nights, you know, just two people talking and a bunch of stories in between. Smart George

I'm definitely more interested in Three thousand years of longing than Beast but I am an Idris Elba fan so I may have to do a double feature.

I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. Definitely not for everyone but as the early narration suggests, it's a movie for people who enjoy stories and this tells quite a few. Kinda had a Terry Gilliam vibe to it in my opinion.

Both movies have me interested to see them, but I do appreciate the heads up on the misleading trailers for 3000 Years. “My Dinner with Andre” - but with an ancient genie - sounds like a good premise, but not at all what the trailers are indicating

Beast is a really great Creature Feature. I haven't seen Three Thousand Years of Longing yet. I had to push that back because Dragonball Super wasn't going to be in my theater much longer, so I saw that instead. I'll be seeing it next week though.

I had not heard of the first movie, but now I kinda wanna watch it. I'm conflicted with Beast. A stupid, action thriller is always fun, but I don't feel good about them demonizing Lions, especially since they're already poached to such an extent.

Saw Three Thousand Years of Longing last night, going in only saw one trailer a while ago and only remembered "Idris Elba is a genie", ands George Miller is the guy who did Mad Max and Babe, so this could be anything... Going in with that mindset, I thought the scenes with Elba and Swinton in the hotel room telling stories was great, if odd at times, but then we leave the hotel room for the last 1/3 and it fell apart for me... I totally get your qualified "huh" on this.
