THREE THRUSHES IN THE SOW - Redwing, Fieldfare and Song Thrush

Because of the snow and ice and warnings not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary it was a good day to do some filming in the garden. I had put out some apples and pears in the garden in the morning, more in hope rather than expectation, to see if I could attract either of the winter thrushes that had not yet visited the garden this winter. You can imagine my delight when both the Redwing and Fieldfare put in an appearance, followed not long after by a Song Thrush.

A flock of fieldfares and a redwing too during the snow with our resident brave blackbird doing his best to retain his territory. Resulted in a lot apples! Beautiful film.

It is amazing how these little birds manage to keep themselves warm.

Their main requirement is finding enough food to provide the energy to keep them warm. You can see at 0:58 the redwing is puffing out its feathers to trap air in them to act as a form of insulation. Some birds like the starling come into towns and cities at night to roost where the temperature is 3 or 4 degrees higher than the countryside, and other like the longtail tit huddle together in groups, and wrens will some time roost in nest boxes together sometimes in quite large numbers. In the end food is the most important factor as the days are short and the nights are so long.

Wonderful filming, Maurice. A great opportunity for you to film the Winter thrushes in picturesque conditions. We had a big influx of Redwings and Fieldfares into my local park recently. Most of the Fieldfares seem to have gone but there are lots of Redwings still around. I might see if I can attract them closer to my camera with some apples!

Wonderful video! You had such nice visitors that day. Fieldfares and Song Thrushes are quite common in Poland all year round, but I've never seen a Redwing during migration. I like your capture of this rare bird especially sitting like a fluffy colourful ball on the branch at the end of the video. Greetings.

Absolutely brilliant Maurice. It is extrememly difficult even to spot redwing or fieldfare never mind film them at close quarters. I saw no fieldfare this winter and only a few redwing from a distance.
