Winter is always a hard time for birds, but during long cold and snowy spells food can become very difficult to find and this is when they will really appreciate any efforts that we make to put out extra food for them.

Superb video! Very informative and beautiful! This winter in Poland is very mild. I often saw insects flying in winter sunlight. But still I also feed birds. It's so enjoyable! Greetings.

Thank you Jakub for your comments. The last few years we have had quite mild winters here but this time we have had more snow and hard frosts and more snow is forecast for us gain this week so the birds will be flocking back into the garden. Best wishes Maurice.

I fully agree with this. I could never understand why so many people seem to stop feeding the birds as soon as it starts to get cold. :(

Thank you Jennie for your comments, I know what you mean, to loose oneself in the tranquility that birds can bring to the garden can be very calming and a wonderful way to de-stress.

Yes, but also how they never give up, no matter the weather and with one leg they just get on with it .. for me it's a real inspiration!!

Hi Maurice, Really well filmed and produced video. I've recently discovered your UK garden birds website which is also excellent, however, I've tried to send you a message through the website but it keeps telling me there's a problem and to try later. Not sure if it's your end or mine! Anyway, all the very best. Nick

I have just got my very first wild bird feeding station. I'm a complete novice, I really enjoy looking/watching the birds and so do my two young children. Please? what advice for food to attract as many birds as possible. I'm a stay at home mum so my budget is low. Thank you for the lovely video and your time in reading this 😊

Kerry Johnson I may suggest the RSPB website and the BTO. Obviously they plug there own products which aren't particularly cheap, but may give you an idea of the different preferred seeds/foods, then you can shop around 😤and a thanks for thinking of our wild creatures 👍they provide great entertainment.

Thank you Kerry for your interesting comments. My birds are spoilt; they get through 2 Kg of live mealworms a week and more during the breeding season as I have a resident colony of about 40 house sparrows that have to feed their young on live food. It’s a bit expensive but as you can see birds are my passion. Dried mealworms are much cheaper and probably more convenient to store and use. During the breeding season when the birds are feeding young ones it’s best to soak the dried mealworms first to avoid choking the chicks. For the bird table I use a top quality bird seed mix, as the cheaper mixes contain a lot of course cereal grain like wheat that is often left by the birds, and black sunflower seed with husks on that the birds discard and can make quite a mess. I add more sunflower hearts, raisins and kibbled peanuts to this mix. You can bulk up a seed mix with portage oats and crumbed dried crusts of wholemeal bread. I use sunflower hearts in the hanging feeders as most birds seem to prefer these. I also hang up bug and berry suit blocks, fatballs are very similar and probably cheaper. I have a hanging peanut feeder but this is not a favourite. In the winter most types of fruit go down well, they don’t have to be top quality. Finally the children might like to make fatballs or bird cakes for the birds, there are many recopies on the net. Best wishes, Maurice

Maurice , how high would it be wise to hang a bird house ? I live on the 8th floor . Blackbirds come to my balcony for food, but i want to have a bird house for them . Will those precious creatures inhabit it ? One more, I have a cat . My Anton is always waiting for my birds, and, I think, scares them. What should I do ? Any advice ?
