Never ran out of battery, never needed 24mm or 35mm, never needed the f:1.4, never need 47 meg pixel. The Q2 (or the Q-series to be more precise) has been an 'objet du désir' for quite some time now. And taking a page from my father's book, who bought a long desired VW camper van from the inheritance my grandfather left him, I sold my Fujifilm X100V and my Fujifilm X-T1 and together with the small part of the inheritance my father gave me, bought the Q2 a few months back. Couldn't be happier. Thank you Hugh, for your insights and inspiration.

Ok, as mentioned before, I am 2/3rds into a two week European trip. I am sitting at the airport outside Stockholm waiting to return to London with my Hasselblad 500 C/M at my side. My back hurts, but I anticipate the joy of my images when developed in a few weeks. This camera, the Q2, small agile and with resolution to beat the band, it it the reason to join the 21st century? Hold that thought. This moment, the flight had been announced as delayed. And my tired feet and back would appreciate a smaller, light wait camera that will not rob my eye of the resolution I demand. I assure you, in two weeks, in my darkroom, my tired back will be forgotten and the only thing that will matter is the image. Maybe I need to try one of these modern joys. Charlie

I wonder if there will ever come a time when Leica offers IBIS - if not, what would be the reason for retaining a fixed sensor when increasing sensor resolution begins to test the user's skill in compensating for camera shake? Surely Leica has the mechanical and electronic engineering expertise to implement such technology, and cost should be of quite low importance given its affluent user base. Most competitors(?), with the notable exception of Canon, offer a magic anti-vibe sensor option within their line-up.

Let's accept it, we all are biased when it comes to Leica. Some are biased towards an opinion that Leica cameras are expensive & substandard piece of equipment while others are biased towards the feel and inspiration that only a Leica can facilitate them with. I, just like you, belong to the latter genus of creatives and I absolutely love anything with the name Leica on it. Even though I cannot afford any of it just yet. But I am determined that the first gift I'll buy myself when I will be in a position to do so will be a Leica. I absolutely loved your review of the Q2. I have enjoyed each one of your videos on various Leica cameras. Please keep them coming. It is only you, I believe, who does justice to the reviews of gear with a red dot. Your videos perfectly capture what it feels like to shoot with a Leica through their sedate nature. They're almost like a heartfelt love letter to the camera brand we have come to love so much, though it occasionally breaks our heart too by not giving us all that we want. But then that is also one of the many reasons our relationship continues.

In the UK a used Q will cost you nearly 3k and a new one is just over 3.7k, so when you think that you can have the Q2 for just over 4k new that's pretty good value for money... So you could sell the Q2 after say 4 years of use and maybe reclaim 75% of your outlay, so this camera is only costing you 1k over 4 years......

Fascinating - as Spock would have said. Another great Leica review, although will there ever be another box set in the style of the Leica SL quadrilogy? A camera review encased in a grand sweep of European history, fascism, world war and the birth of miniature format photography: what a wonderful thing! Bravo, Leica for sticking to its Q format in an age where reviewers seem obsessed with the accrual of more and more features rather than attention to basics, executed with precision and wisdom. My heart is heavy, though. A fixed lens has to be the right one for its owner, and 28mm is too wide for me. A 40mm 1:1.8 or 1:2 cropping to 55mm would have me running to the Leica Store, so for now I’ll leave my piggy bank in one piece until it’s heavy enough for that CL.

Gratitude and compliments to the concentration evidenced here, on the enduring values of photographers raised on the rangefinder Leica, and the probably greater commitments of immigrants to the experience in later life. We know what this perspective is. Given the verification registered in this review, of the stunning value offered in the Q2, may I offer the thought that the camera represents, to anyone who has deferred exploring the 28mm focal length in his own activity, this glorious package is priced beneath par for the value (to say nothing of price) of the lens, itself. An enthusiast for the M10 series need sacrifice nothing, if he's willing to exploit Leica's empathy for high-speed medium wide-angle responsiveness in the diminutive, impertinent thing, which travels with his M kit as a convenience without drawbacks.

Hello Hugh, first of all thank you, I really enjoy this channel. I have a technical question regarding the digital zoom. If the lens is a 28mm, when you crop to 50mm, you get a 50mm field of view but the image has the 28mm focal character right? if you take a portrait with the 50mm crop, the portrait is going to have the 28mm distortion. Or I'm missing something here?
@3BMEP5 жыл бұрын
Henry Deletra you are exactly right - HOWEVER: this is what I was talking about when I spoke of perspective distortion (which another viewer in our little community corrected me on, though for the life of me I don’t remember the exact term): because of the crop, you can move farther away from the subject, reducing that “spoon reflection” kind of distortion. Make sense?

@@3BMEP I went to the Leica store and shot a few picture with the Q2. I didn't had the time to dive into all the cameras settings, I just went to the street in front of the store and took a few snapshots. Coming from the M10 I wanted to test the autofocus, and if there were distortion with the digital zoom crop. When I shoot I saw clipping in many images (the sky was very white/bright) so be careful with the overexpose, but for my surprise it was very easy to recover detail in post, even more than with the M10 imo. The files were gorgeous, a lot of detail and very very sharp. I took a few portraits with the 50mm crop and the 75mm and seriously, is hard to imagine that they were taken with a 28mm lens. I d'ont know if is true but in the Leica store they told me the the Q2 has a distortion correction in camera when you use the crops. I would like to make more tests but this camera could be a keeper. I think actually, that the Q represents more the M spirit that the actual M. I think Cartier-Bresson if given the choice would probably took the Q (hahaha).

Really feel you on the 40mm for more contextual portraits - what a great focal length, I wish there was a compact that catered to it. Then again, a GX9 (or used GX80/85) with Panasonic's 20 1.7 isn't exactly conspicuous either - and then there's the flexibility of an ILC.. I just wish I could shoot tethered with it...tested the phase 150mp, that’s special with backlit sensor. But medium format is so slow compared to the q. Most of the reviews of the Q1/Q2 discuss the "either or": Is it a gateway camera before the M? Is it a substitute for an M. But let me ask (And your "Now I want a Q2 on top of the CL" kind of jumped the gun on me...): What would you think about having both? M240 for example, Or M246 and the Q2? Maybe at a price of a 28 lux+some, we can get the entire package? Is it obsolete? Where do you (If at all) see logic in such a combination (Not causing one to think for hours with which camera to go outside... As it happens today)?
@3BMEP5 жыл бұрын
Sharon Leibel The Q2 is a bit of a Rorschach test. Gateway to the M for some, adjunct to others, stand-alone to others again. I prefer the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, and I like small - which is why I enjoy the CL and TL2. But light and small becomes bigger and heavier as one adds lenses. This is why the Q2 is so appealing to me: it’s an alternative to the CL such that sometimes I’d be willing to bring the CL and glass, other times I wouldn’t - which is where the Q2 is beautiful.
@sharonleibel5 жыл бұрын
That’s a very good analogy. And I can relate to the “stuck with one lens” thing, Especially when it’s a 28 (most people commented that if it was a 35? they wouldn’t think twice...) I can see why most people see it as a great all-arounder, But speaking the CL: Isn’t it just a Leica without the Leica advantages of being full frame? An APS-C camera in a brand that takes pride in being the first full frame mirrorless body ? Doesn’t the CL kind of defeats the Leica advantage and makes it the same as others (Obviously, X100F comes to mind)?

Vajir Musabji I think it addresses every issue I saw in the original Q (which I liked very much) in a complete way., making it a VERY attractive camera. If you shoot street or landscape or travel, given you are already a Leicaphile, offs are you’ll really enjoy it. But: it should always be asked: what can’t you do with what you have that the Q2 can - and how important is that to you? Keep me posted!

Leica makes beautiful compact camera cases for the X1, X2, D-Lux, C-Lux, and other Panasonic-made Leicas (the X1 and X2 were made by Leica). Look up the 19554 case for the D-Lux7 camera - it fits the camera perfectly with no room to spare, fully enclosed and protecting the lens, and it looks elegant - not like the old-fashioned camera cases. The point of this is that Leica is making a $5k compact camera with the Q2, and then denying that it's a compact camera by not providing a compact case - only providing ugly photographer cases that are used for system cameras. If Leica were to get their heads out of the sand on this Q2, it would be to provide the elegant carry case type that is available for all of their other compact non-system cameras. The point of that is to keep people focused on what the Q2 really is, and make it fun to carry most places without a camera bag or a half-cover that doesn't protect the lens. I've been using these cases for 15 years, and they make a night-and-day difference in the pleasure of owning a compact Leica camera.

you should convince Leica to add in a menu an option to add a 40mm crop. It would be cool to use the function button to switch between crops that one has selected in the menu like it was possible on the GRII. if it had that option and a 4;3 option (cost nothing to do that with an EVF camera) I would buy it right away

I'm a big fan of your videos Hugh, but I wanted to point out that we had to sit through 8 advertisements to get to the end ( hope I counted right). There were 4 brought in by KZbin and 4 embedded in the video itself (3 for SquareSpace and 1 for your workshop in New York). While I am all for advertising I found, in this case, that the ads distracted significantly from the enjoyment of your video. The first one cut you off mid-sentence. Later, I wanted to rewind because I missed a quick shot of yours, but as soon as I rewound I got an ad. It was so unexpected that I thought I was watching another video and backed out, forcing myself to restart the video.

Just curious how good is leica (especially Q2)? I'm new in photography, and just can't understand why people spending their $5.000 just for a camera (unless their cash is unlimited 😁). Can I get same or similar (9/10) IQ from my fuji XT2 paired with 16mm f1.4 (less than $2000)? I'm seriously asking 🙏
@3BMEP4 жыл бұрын
Anton Sujarwo the X-T2 with 16/1.4 is a superb combination, and in fact irrespective of brand, I prefer the field of view offered by its full frame equivalent 24mm to 28mm. Another way to go is the micro four thirds Panasonic LUMIX G9 with, say, the Leica DG Summilux 12mm f/1.4. Both will offer a beginning photographer (or very seasoned photographer!) extraordinary image quality and flexibility to explore via their interchangeable lenses that the Q2 cannot; both offer wonderful color and great ergos. The G9 offers video performance and IBIS the other two cannot, superior EVF to the X-T2. What the Q2 does offer is a shooting experience and resolution the other two cannot. I would not recommend the Q2 to a beginning photographer, especially one who is budget conscious. With this said, to the experienced eye, the difference in IQ at 28mm field of view equivalence is there with the Q2. Don’t let that stop you from getting the X-T2: as a I said, great camera and the 16/1.4 is one of my favorite Fuji lenses. Just go out and enjoy - and if and when you are so inclined, spend the difference on more glass, travel, contribution to a worthy cause... you get the idea. 😊
@wikenseru81874 жыл бұрын
@@3BMEP Thank you so much hugh! Lumix G9 was on my list too (IBIS is tempting), but I went for XT2 (bigger sensor, assuming better for low light). One more question please,. Based on your experience, Which one is better for low light, XT2 or G9? Then which one would you pick if you could only afford one camera?
@3BMEP4 жыл бұрын
Anton Sujarwo see my comparison of the GH5 and Sony a6300, and you’ll see that the difference in low light performance is indeed in favor of a larger sensor, but not by much. If I could only have one (given that we shoot video as well as still AND the fact that IBIS MORE than offsets the high ISO advantage in many though not all cases - and the far superior EVF - I’d go with the G9. If you widen the choice to include the X-T3, it’s a closer call because of the ‘3’s upgraded EVF, video capabilities, ports and AF. All it needs is IBIS to convince me of its superiority for what we do over the G9. Be happy with the great camera you now have, go out and shoot (see my review of the X-T2).

Hugh I'm a great fan of your work. I currently shoot with a Z7 and Zeiss Milvus basically I have most focal lengths I just love the IQ they give. Lately I've been thinking maybe I need a walk around camera. As IQ is very important to me I was either thinking of the Q2 or CL. Whats got me into action my local store has a 20% off everything sale for 3 more days so..... I travel a lot and love doing urban type shots not really street/people. Q2 or Cl with 2 lens, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated
@3BMEP4 жыл бұрын
You've already got a great ILC mirrorless. If you like 28mm and 35mm FOV, go for the Q2. Then again, the CL with SummicronTL 23mm f/2 is even smaller; the 35/1.4 SummiluxTL is spectacular at a 50mm FF and IQ of this package is INCREDIBLE. It's what we own (in addition to the SL2 and SummicronSL 35/2). If you can really get 20% off that Leica gear, whoa!

Thanks for the review, Hugh! I always love hearing your thoughts and insights about a new launch, but I also really enjoy seeing your environmental street photography portraits, regardless of camera. The Q2 is certainly an interesting concept, making use of a high-res sensor to provide the functionality of a range of focal lengths with just one excellent and fast lens. The nice thing is that lens remains an f/1.7 lens regardless of the range of focal lengths you can set. For me personally, the wondrous little X100F remains my street photography camera of choice and with respect an outlay of 5 large... well, I'd be using that capital outlay for a digital MF system that begins the designation, "GF".... Cheers, Stephen.

So, I guess what you are saying is that I will love the Q2 as much and now more with all of the changes. hmm I was thinking of a CL for lens changeability but then I am not a bank. My Q type 116 and my D-LUX 109 are fun cameras. I brought my Q to Thailand and just went around the neighborhood and down the river and used every focal length and just had fun switching them out with a touch of a button. The 2 is not the P correct? I see the markings as 2 so I am happy with that. Should I even trade in (I never trade in) or just play with both? ("I am not a bank") Maybe I should check out LEICA in BH and talk to this lady who set me up with my original. More later on... I know I will be impressed with the new Q2 and may just hold back from the CL for a moment. The Q type 116 is 5 years strong and I got mine in 2016 with no regrets. I should not walk into that LEICA store at all.

The questions always are: 1) what can't you do with what you have already that you can with the new gear; 2) does it really matter; and 3) is switching the best use of your funds? Only you know the answers. Happy thinking! :)

I'm writing this from a different prospective than I would have ordinairly... yesterday, the Leica Store here in San Francisco combined the opening reception for their current exhibition with the rollout of the Q2 (as well as a special version of the Monochrome... but hold that thought). I did indeed have a chance to get my grubby paws on a Q2. Impressions? Pretty much everything you reported on it (I didn't have the opportunity to actually take it out for a week...) But, I do like it. Not that I would give up my current stable of cameras, but still it sounds like it would be worth owning. I put my name on their list...
