I have the same conclusion. I looked around and even with the temptation of the S1 I still think the gh5 hold its own in 2019. Great analysis!
@chrisklugh
@chrisklugh 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. One day when there are more lens and a S2, it will probably beat the GH5 for video. But hopefully by then we will have a GH6. I think m43 will always lead the tech race for video. The heat FF creates, plus its cost, I don't think there will be a market for a FF GH5. If you wanted that performance, you would get a cini camera.
@keithgoreham1463
@keithgoreham1463 5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisklugh Panasonic didn't lie. The S1/S1R are still cameras first, and video cameras second. Which at least in my case, matches my shooting style. I want good video, but excellent stills are still paramount. I see the GH5 (which I also own) as being balanced the opposite way. Video first, stills second. Thus it never really replaced my Nikon DSLRs in the same way that the S1 increasingly is.
@chrisklugh
@chrisklugh 5 жыл бұрын
@@keithgoreham1463 I get that, and its probably the best FF video camera still yet. I think for those that are used to packing FF gear around, this camera will be great for them. I'm more video and like the smaller lens as I can ninja more stuff in run and gun scenarios like events. Photos are a hobby for me so the GH5 is plenty good enough for me. I wish the screen was an HDR so I don't have to choice to bring my monitor or not; and be damned if I do, damned if I don't use it.

I really wanted the S1H. All the bells and whistles screamed buy me. But, after seeing the L mount and Lenses choice. Hell no. Just going to stick with the Gh5. In 1-2 years, the S1H will dominate as the lens choice will grow.

Quite literally the only reason I never ordered the GH5. To this day, I keep seeing background focus pulsing in GH5 videos, and the content creators are like, "What's the big deal?" My response is, what's the big problem? Most other cameras don't have that problem.

who need this misterious AUTO-FOCUS, i personaly think if you don't know how to handle manual focus you don't need auto anyway !!! 90% of people who know how "FOCUS" Works don't need autofocus anyway ! assuming you not filming with stative and running around back and forth in front of your camera, you don't need razer sharp autofocus !!! 80/20 RULE !!! applicable on all 100% in this case ! nailed to the point !!!

i've been a photographer for 55 years now starting out with my grandmother's folding 620 kodak around 1963-64. i've worked at a camera store and a newspaper and handled literally hundreds of camera and owned a good percentage of those hundreds as well. but i can tell you without equivocation that the gh5 was the best thing ergonomically and user interface-wise to ever happen to me in photography. it is ultra-configurable while remaining approachable--totally polar opposite to sony and olympus. i needed one button to toggle mono/color. done. i needed one button to switch in a fake teleconverter. done. and i don't even use like 40% of the features on offer such as 4k/6k and burst. but all that is there should i develop the need or the itch. it fits perfectly in my hands and rides on my back hip weightless on a peak sling--usually with the 35-100/2.8 since i live in a semi rural area and at least one critter pops up on my daily walks. in short, i can't say enough good about it. just the other day i bought the new s1 just because (well, no 'because' is needed for a photo geek, right?) i used to shoot 'real' full frame as my default mode in the 35mm film days. in fact, my first full frame was a used $10 argus c3 (brick) around 1965 or so. the s1 with the kit lens (24-105) reminds me of a nikon f3 with motor drive with a 200/2 or the 80-200/2.8 mounted as far as size and weight go, but although it's hard to believe, in some or many ways they've improved ergonomics and ease of use on the s1 even above the gh5 in several areas. there's not as many actual buttons, but they've significantly improved the locations of them. for instance, there's two in front which your ring and 2nd finger can rest on when gripping the camera and there's my mono and tc toggles. and they've moved the /disp/ button to the bottom left rear and it's no longer sunken. i can't explain it, but i constantly activate the /disp/ button on the gh5, yet when i want to press it i have to try 2-3 times. :) and remember i mentioned critters? it's like panasonic was thinking of my use-case when they added animal detection to face and eye detection! anyway, too long already. just wanted you to know i appreciate your recognition of how ground-breaking the gh5 is and i didn't even get into the video stuff. but since i started to teach myself cinematography several years ago my goal was to be able to shoot 4k hdr and display it directly on my 4k hdr tv without editing (which i absolutely can't grasp the paradigm of). and the gh5 fills this need admirably and imo the results are spectacular even if no one but me ever sees them. tks agn, /guy

Oh dude the gh6 is gonna be a monster . . . 8K? 20+ stops of DR? Raw Video (either external or possibly internal, maybe)? 4K 120p? All rumors but I think the GH6 Could do all of this due to its smaller sensor that does not produce as much heat :)

I am also a proud owner of a GH5. No one seems to mention the 4K/6K photo mode which allows you to take video in 4:3 ratio in 30/60 frames per second in order to extract individual frames as 8/16 megapixel photos that are very difficult to plan for. Very informative video. I enjoyed it.

Ive been using the gh5 as my main cameras on the weddings i shoot for just over a year now, the joy they bring is beyond compare,i can forgive the autofocus fall downs which is hard to say coming from the Sony school of thought,but my gh5s have something which the A7 did not and thats character the look i get is is sometimes breath taking its more than the eye can see sometimes,i know i know many would say it could improve but like a old friend it has its imperfections but they blend into back ground whe you trust what you know.

I just paired my GH5 with a GH5S and the combination is really strikingly complete for a live videographer. Having an IBIS-enabled run and gun camera and a fixed sensor cinema-oriented camera (coming in at an unbeatable price to features ratio - seriously, nothing else at this price point compares) is a really tremendous package.

I'm thinking of going with a GH5 and either the BMPCC 4K or the GH5S. The P4K has the edge in image quality and the flexibility of BRAW, but has issues with battery life and storage. The GH5S is almost twice the price, but uses the same batteries as the GH5, and has all the reliability of the GH5 too. Honestly, the flippy screen is so useful. I might rent a P4K for a week so I can figure out if it works for me.
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
raksh9 let us know how it goes. BMPCC4K also has brilliant software interface, but I’d prefer the consistency of a single manual of arms and the flexibility of a GH5 and GH5s combo. No right answer here in a vacuum. Whatever works best for you!

It is remarkable that the GH5 has held its own during such epoch change. I agree with the others who have said keep the long form content. There are many of us who thirst for thoughtfulness. It fired up my imagination and confidence like nothing else since I bought it almost two years ago. It truly is a soldier in the trenches that has my back at every turn. There was a screening recently for a short film I shot (handheld mostly) and edited and people thought I shot it on an arri. Also, Hugh, I must thank you for the insights you gave me on the 30 f1.4 a few weeks ago. I've been absolutely loving it. Total goldilocks lens for self tape auditions. Hey, if your still answering questions on this video. Please may I ask how does this camera do in low light with the prime 25mm f1.7? Surely it does okay I'm a city that's resonably well lite, without having to use too high an iso, and I don't see many films or videos where people are zooming in during a video/film at night!? Obviously any camera if you take it too a dark field it's going to suck! Like say you went to a town centre at night, London or down a main Street with good street lighting,!? Now I don’t have to waste half a day pasting all that information together out of a ton of blogger wisdom and even sound like I half know what I’m talking about. I keep reading and hearing the DSLR is as dead as a boat anchor though. Not in this household. When a day of photography really matters, I’ll take my big beasts with me and to blazes with the weight. It's like the middle genius brother of Jeff Goldblum and John Stewart just unloaded the brief history of time version of every camera and lens ever made in the past 5 years and delivered it like a GD memorized Tarantino soliloquy. Very thorough analysis based on real world application. It's a confusing time for a camera buyer looking to get back into the hobby, with a lean toward video. Old dad with young kids, nearing retirement, so have time to edit, LOL. Used to have descent photo chops back in the day. TBH, still learning the GH5, but extremely happy with it, especially with the new f/w. When there is vastly conflicting information, you are left with nothing to do but going with your gut.

Welcome! Many folks like the Weebill Lab, but I want to check out the Ronin SC. The GH5 trades off IBIS for low light performance and better results when mounting on a vehicle, so it’s not about the person, it’s about the use case.

I never planned on being a hybrid shooter so I purchased the GH5s for video. However I went back to school full time for photography. I was sure I would need a new camera with a higher megapixel count but so far I haven't found 10 megapixels a limitation. I have printed and even multiple times printed larger than the theoretical 10mp size but I couldn't tell and my professor didn't even notice. I have been looking for a stills camera to go along with my GH5s and almost pulled the trigger on the X-H1 because of the ergos over the X-T3 but bailed out because of it's focus area. I think the X-T3 is probably the most beautiful camera on the market but seems like it might be rough switching from stills to video then back to stills at the same job. I wanted to pick up a G9 but can't get over it's 12 bit stills limitation, same with the GH5. Is there a difference to worry about between 12 and 14 bit? I had really high hopes the S1 but it didn't speak to me when I had it in my hands. I don't like big lenses, maybe because I went from the t3i to GH4 to before I really invested past the nifty fifty. I have had full frame envy and probably still do. In my program in school I hear a lot about the "full frame advantage " but my images off the GH5s have held up extremely well and even surpasses that of the full frame images I've seen from classmates. Won an award off one image and merited two images at a professional photographers association gathering while only entering two. To wrap this up it's nice to hear someone talking about the good points of cropped sensors. I don't know if I'll find a camera to go with my GH5s any time soon, if I do it will most likely be a cropped sensor, probably Fuji. Thank you for the very thoughtful video.

Very well said! I’ve been shooting professional video (and some photo) work on my Gh5s and love it! The lack of room for cropping means that nailing composition is important. I’m considering a gh5 or g9 and continuing to invest in mft for photo work and a b cam to the gh5s. The s1 is also in mind, but the body and lenses would definitely stretch the budget. 😂

I find that the more I know about the GH5 the more I think I am under-utilizing it in my workflow. You mentioned that you are not using a gimbal any longer, are you using a cage, and if so which one? Thanks for your reviews and sharing your experience.

So rich with information. Great video. O feel the same about my GH5. Even if I do adapt the Sony ecosystem into my workflow, I never want to do it at the expense of the advantages of the GH5.

Hugh thanks for the video - I just bought a GH5 and this video comforts my empty wallet. Gh5S next. That kit ought to last years and years. I don't think we will need any brighter than a gh5S with a f/1.4 or similar lens. It becomes unnatural to see the night any brighter than that. I just wish the footage from the Lumix S1 did not look so good... ultimately, too heavy and big and pricey.

Great video - How interesting you posted this, I told a few friends of mine recently, that I felt the GH5 hits a sweet spot unlike any camera of its type I've seen. Also check it out, on eBay out of around 265 for sale, only around 41 were used, and none with bodies under around $1,300. So people are hanging on to them.....for good reason as we all know.!

Thanks for your time and 'tone' sir. You touched on the G9 and it is a camera that is peeking my interest as a viable crossover (video / stills) camera to compliment my Blackmagic rig with MFT lenses... What aspects would make you buy the GH5 instead of the G9 as a B-cam video and A-cam in stills? Thanks again Mr B. :)

Depends on your budget, arm strength and ultimate ambition. S1 is spectacular, but for what we do in video, the GH5 is a better value and easier on the back.

I bought an M43 camera this week, (NOS) it feels right and the buttons are where I expect to find them. It is not a GH5 but the GX8, I have had one for years and bizarrely perhaps felt drawn to having another one. Yes, the auto focus can be wilful but I can live with it. It seems to be that in the video arena we are already at a point where content generators can produce output that exceeds what the consumer can use. As I am writing this I just checked the video resolution on this laptop, 1920 by 1080... it can't do better. A very thought provoking presentation once again, always riveting.

@@3BMEP , thank you for the kind reply. Having given the subject of "content consumption" more thought, I realise that in our home the one huge print was from the output of an iPhone 3GS. Purely as a hobbyist that likes to do wildlife and landscape photography and share with friends on social media I perhaps realise that trailing edge technology is a good fit for me! Best wishes David

I have three Lumix GH5. G9 , GX9 all take the same lenses. I use the GH5 with DC adapter battery and a good Battery Pack.The battery pack powers the G9 and charges the GX9. I use the G9 as a true hybrid and the photos are great and sharp. The GX9 is used all the time with small prime lenses. 12 F2 Olympus 15 1.7 Leica 42.5 F 1.7 and 75 1.8 Olympus. The GH5 with 12-35 F 2.8 35-100 2.8 and 100 to 300 Panasonic with a German Tripod ring. All this work is Volunteer for local 501C3 groups. I find low light weddings and events the Nikon 810 with dedicated flash that works in the dark. As someone who delivers quality for 60 years, do not depend on Mirror-less cameras for low light action and no light wedding receptions. Low Light Theater work is still best served by my Nikon 810 and a heavy old style 80=200 F2.8 that I bought used and had Nikon rework. I cannot hand hold it and use a sturdy mono-pod. I am starting to use grips on G9 and GX9 and find them to useful for hand holding video and still images. I always shoot 4k 30 p because I can use cheaper cards. External Video capture is on my to do list for next year. I gave the HD recorder to my son and Grandson.

Great analysis! Love my GH5, but I do see where it has it's weaknesses and I guess that is where the A7 III shines. Since for some reason we can't have it all in one camera. I guess a GH5 and an A7 III would be an amazing pair and would be all I would ever need for video and stills. Keep up your wonderful work, Hugh!
