Thresher Sharks Kill Prey with Tail. The thresher shark has one of the most dangerous tails in the ocean. It has evolved a deadly hunting tactic to kill its prey with its tail. Watch these thresher sharks in action.

It's just cavitation. It's certainly not breaking up the water molecules but it's breaking the polar bonds that water has making water vapor which is a well known phenomenon called cavitation bubbles which form on fast moving propellers under water.

They are likely cavitation bubbles... a 90mph tail slap is not capable of severing atomic bonds. If only separating water into elements was that easy...

Thank you for pointing this out. This was just speculated by the researching biologist, but not proven. He thinks it might occur from a localized explosion or shockwave. There is always a possibility of a miscommunication too. It is really cool to get input from everyone and always appreciated!

While kayaking off La Jolla California I saw a thresher shark roll out of the water and its long tail slapped down under its body like it was trying to hit something, but not overhead like Simon Oliver’s science article indicates. I do not think a thresher can strike overhead because that would be spine-breaking. I believe a correct interpretation of the article’s video is that as the shark brakes with its pectoral fins, which throws its rear body and tail vertically forward, it quickly twists sideways and delivers a fast sideways slap followed by a return slap and twist back again to face forward. This slap from the tail mimics the movement of a whip. The thresher only appears to be slapping overhead; really the thresher quickly twists to slap. Oliver states that threshers sometimes slap sideways. I think their long flexible tails must always slap prey in a sideways motion. Kai Holdaway San Diego
@KrillLiberator
@KrillLiberator 7 жыл бұрын
You are quite correct! Slowing the video down to 25% and watching closely, it is apparent that there is indeed a slight 'twist' of the rear body and that the tail is slapping sideways. There does still seem to be a slight upward curving of the spine, but it's clearly not directly upwards (axially) but at a more oblique angle - upwards and outwards at the same time, so it's definitely using the spine's lateral flexibility to achieve this swift motion. Good spot and great assessment!

threshers may cause cavitation, which can result in extremely high temperatures and even sonoluminescence if the pressures and temperatures get crazy enough. i don't know if it's been proven or not yet, but there have been plenty of scientists that theorize the complete dissociation of oxygen and hydrogen during the phenomenon. so, it might not be that ridiculous.

I live in Hawai'i and once (so far) saw a thresher shark come on shore to grab a fish. I saw it's tail coming toward the beach, it was poking up out of the water, moving fast, and was flexible (I honestly didn't know what it was right away!), it was swimming around, I think herding a fish closer to shore, when all of a sudden it struck, and in what I can only describe as a blur of motion I saw it in a split second whack a fish almost on shore, grab it, and quickly swim back out to sea. Mahalo & Aloha...

Can someone help me understand how they break so sharply that they can sling their tail like a whip? Isn't stopping on a dime underwater exponentially harder that it is above the surface? Also, sharks bodies have evolved over hundreds of millions of years to be streamlined underwater, which I would assume would only make it harder to stop so quickly. Watching these sharks just hurts my head man, how do they do it?
