My office is right across the street from Goodwill. The other day I noticed a bike was dumped there the night before. I was looking for a mountain bike for my 5 year old. Something she could learn simple gears and with a front fork. As I drove up, I couldn't believe it! It was a Specialized Hotrock. It looked super greasy and dirty but with a little tune up, could be sweet. I went to the front desk and said I wanted to buy it. The lady said, "All bikes are $4.50." I asked her to clarify the price and she did. What?! She then told me to go back there and the lady would give me a piece of tape with the bike and price and I could come back up and pay for it. I did as instructed and the lady in the back picked up the bike, bounced it around a bit and said . . . wait for it . . . "$1.99." What (again)?! I only believed her when she slapped the pice of tape on my hand. I went back to the front and paid for it with my debit card, a total of $2.13 with tax. Sheesh! Didn't even have any cash or coins. Took it home and degreased the whole bike, straightened the rear derailleur hanger bracket, aired up the tires and it was ready to roll. Can't keep my daughter off of it! Score of the century. When you have 5 kids in bikes, it helps to find a nice cheap one every now and then!

You know what this video made me realize more than anything: How for the longest time, cycling in the US was seen as something as "a toy for kids" instead of a way to get around. The ratio of kids bikes to adult bikes must be 10:1 in the US. In Europe, you'd find tons of adult size bikes everywhere.

Hey RJ. Thing about thrift stores in my location, we've got a Goodwill, a Salvation Army, and then we've got a couple of second-hand stores: One is 501(c)(3) non-profit bike shop called Re-Bicycle Lenawee that refurbishes old and worn-out bikes (they also sell new and used parts, but don't do E-bikes). The other place is a store called Mohr's, where I think the owner refurbishes bikes and sells them cheap, such as a girl's 20" I saw a month ago for $15. The fact you're going around to over 15 locations would have me going probably to Detroit, Ann Arbor, Toledo, and Jackson to hit the same number of places -- all over an hour away from where I live.

That's hilarious that you drove that far for thrift store bicycles. I rarely ever see good bicycles. I'd avoid Goodwill. Anything that is worth a decent amount of money gets sent to corporate for them to auction or sell back to the store. I know that Goodwill South West PA has an auction website. I usually stop at the same 2 stores on my way home from work once a week. I could probably do 6+ stores but a lot of them close earlier. The God's honest truth is it's easier for people to dump their [literal] trash (old and broken furniture, lamps, bikes, exercise equipment, etc, anything that can't fit in their garbage can) off at a thrift store, than it is to take it to a landfill. This is why thrift stores have so much trash. Most landfills charge money, while thrift shops don't. Thrift shops are usually closer than landfills, so it's easier. And most thrift shops don't actually check and reject literal trash.

backi in the 80s, 90s, up to early 2000s i've bought so many brand names like bianchi, specialized, trek, and many others today all you find is crap from china. when the internet came along late 90s the bikes dwindled as they were now to be found online on used marketplace like craigsLst etc. People were able to search for information and what they're worth and list them online for cash . Also during those early days, you could find schwinns, raleighs etc on the trash bin complete and some unused i didn't even touch those I was just looking for bikes with alloy parts but those were the days…..

Unfortunately now days Trek and specialized are made in china by Giant. There are no good made in America bikes anymore.

Lol yeah every major bike brand is now made in the same 2 chinese factories. Even handmade usa Cannondale switched and no longer have that badge. When I needed a rear triangle for my full suspension bike, diamondback warranty had to get me an entire bike and not just the part because it would have been more expensive to just ship the single piece

Was that a dashcam on the left side of the windshield? It looked pretty nice. You sure do like your thrift adventures.
