What upsets me is GW hires disabled people and pays them less than min wage and does this shit. At least pay your disabled people fair wages.

I remember when thrift stores used to give wheelchairs and walkers away for free to people with disabilities. Now they cost as much at the medical stores. Bibles were also free. Now I see dollar tree items for $2.99 and they still can be bought at dollar tree $1.25. Old magazines used to be free, now they want $3.00 each. I stopped going to thrift stores!

I still shop at GW (here in the States) but I no longer donate there. Most of the good inventory goes to their online store but I still manage to find some good buys. What really burns my britches is when at checkout you are asked if you want to round up the total for donation. This is done as an announcement is made over the loud speaker describing a job program which costs the participants $2,000!!! The gall y'all! One thing I do buy at GW is Bella Soap Bars from Australia! They are awesome...I like the Honeysuckle. 💛

I work at a Plato's Closet, or a second hand store where we PAY PEOPLE for selling their items to us and we would NEVER price anything this expensive. Even for Vintage Coach bags, the most we would price is around $50, and that is in peak condition. Fur coats? Like $20. Plato's as a whole is considered a bit more high-end on the terms of thrift stores because we pay people for good quality clothing without stains, and the fact that places like Goodwill are charging more for DONATIONS meant to help people in low-income homes is absolutely ridiculous.
@lordfreerealestate83023 ай бұрын
That's why I'm considering going to consignment stores. In addition, some of my local consignment stores are small businesses, not chains.
@taro80953 ай бұрын
yes! i've shopped at my local plato's closet since i was a kid and still do as an adult, genuinely a god-send for lower income families since it's targeted at a younger demographic (since the nearby goodwill + savers tended to have a mature-looking selection). the prices have gone up a bit lately, but still extremely cheap compared to small business consignment stores selling basic t-shirts for $30. it's horrible how the working class can't have jacksh!t in this world.
@laurynholling23093 ай бұрын
I love thred up and Plato’s. Also, they check for tears and age and everything like that. Can’t get vintage though because they won’t buy anything too out of season.
@winterinbloom3 ай бұрын
Oh wow, I wonder if Plato's closet is doing better than the one and only time I went into one. This was like, 15-16 years ago, when I walked into a Plato's and most of the clothing was in way worse condition than stuff you find at the thrift store and at 5 times the price or more. I found a white tshirt from the Gap that was so gross and worn out that it would only be good for a cleaning rag, for $20! I haven't set foot in a Plato's since I was so disgusted.
@janedoe28593 ай бұрын
I actually just commented about this, I'm really rough on my jeans because of my job which doesn't pay great. I went to goodwill to find cheap decent jeans and was floored by the prices. I picked up two pairs of jeans from Plato's closet and it costed me less then half what Goodwill was charging for just one pair. They are great jeans too, one was tommy hilfiger and the other was wrangler. its crazy how much thrifting has driven up the price... to the point that people are destroying items they can't sell.
@IJustWantAMocha3 ай бұрын
I work at lifeline here in Australian and the reason why lifeline is upping prices (especially in small towns) because of resellers..people come in looking for expensive brands for cheap prices..then re selling them at the markets. 😀but seeing BUTTONS for 60!? FOR BUTTONS? IS WILD.
@TheSamjane43 ай бұрын
I actually understand this. If they can sell it themselves for the more expensive price they can get more money to fund their other programs. Their clientele are different now. Its rich people buying from them to be trendy so their thinking is...why not sell it to them at the higher price and make the money themselves instead of resellers getting it.
@user-wd3po8sd7k3 ай бұрын
@@TheSamjane4 but why does it matter? If someone can make a decent business out of buying used items while helping the community, why not? Usually resellers fix things up and clean the items. What difference doesn’t make where the item goes after it leaves the store?

i’ve straight up had goodwill employees tell me the pricing is done willy nilly and it absolutely depends on who’s assigned to it that day. supervisors/managers probably oversee that process (and i’m sure have adjusted prices so that they’re higher 😒), but regular employees seemingly don’t care enough to price anything above $5, and the last time i went to a goodwill, the cashier rang up most of my items as the color of the week so they were half off (even if they weren’t). that’s some solidarity right there!!

These instructions are coming from corporate. They're not moving product fast enough so they will smash or even throw items away. This should really tell us something. 1. Stop thrifting. (Those words break my heart.) Someone is being played and it's us. They are mocking us for being brokies and attempting to force us to accept their wares. 2. It is a fact that the employees are told to price the objects as they see fit and to pay no mind to the disdain of the customer. 3. We deserve better. Eventually, Goodwill will be defeated by the consumer because the idea of thrifting in the first place is to SAVE what little money we have by getting a BARGAIN. They're very out of touch, but that will be their downfall. I'm with you, Hailey. I want to go back to the days of .25 cent socks, .50 t-shirts, and 2 or 3 dollar pants/skirts. Smh. Vote with your moolah. Show them you won't tolerate this type of fockery and watch them make a public apology or fold. Either way, I have my 🍿 ready! 😂

Sometimes you can still get bargains if the people pricing dont know the value. My daughter collects vintage littlest pet shops and we found a massive bag of them about 50 pets for $10. Some of the pets in the bag sell for up to $100 each on ebay as they are rare. My daughter wont sell them but she was super thrilled to get some rare ones without paying the huge prices. Lucky they didnt look those up before pricing.

It’s the resellers causing the price increases. I remember hearing about the death of thrift years ago when resale became a popular hustle. People who go around looking for brand names, trends, popular decor styles, etc who then sell items for double or triple. The problem is these ceos of thrift don’t understand how increasing their prices to cash in on the resellers DOESNT WORK that way
@rationalcynic841624 күн бұрын
Yeah, people blame the resellers, but what they do with the items they buy has no bearing on the thrift store. If I go to an art supply store, buy a $50 canvas, paint it, then sell it for $500, it doesn't mean the company that makes the canvas will make more money if they start charging $500 for a $50 blank canvas. This seems to be the model Goodwill is following, and it doesn't work in the long run. There are sellers who upcycle the clothing they buy from thrift stores to make them more appealing. So if they spend $3.00 on an old blouse, upcycle it or fix it, and sell it for $25, Goodwill seems to think they should now be able to sell all their blouses for $25.00.

Companies for years have resorted to counting on customers erroneously believing that they are getting a deal by shopping at a dollar or thrift store when in reality, they're getting fleeced. This is especially true in areas where these stores might be the only ones available to many.

If you want actually affordable prices, shop at garage sales! My friend just moved and furnished her entire house from yard sales for next to nothing. She got a pottery barn couch and beautiful solid wood dining table and chairs for free and an antique handmade chair for $25. People are motivated to give you low prices cause they don’t want to have to haul it back into their house at the end of the day. Go out Saturday mornings and drive around following the signs. The richer the neighborhood, the fancier the stuff. Polite bargaining encouraged. A lot of ladies will even be selling tamales or something, too, so you get cheap lunch too, and it’s just a fun weekly outing.

The goodwill i work at isnt too bad about the stupid expensive prices (although thay definitely have been making chages that have pissed me off). But the donations being closed for the day is pretty normal for some. Like just the other day donations had so much stuff it went all the way to the front of the store on the outside where people drop off. It got so bad the backroom was cramped and there was no space so the managers had to close early. On top of that, no one was working in the textiles section that day, which gets the most of the donations and generally does take up tons of room, so there was no one there to put anything out and make it less tight. Trust me man the whole day after was a stressful ass mess.

Now, everything in my size is sold out for those girlies that like to buy oversize clothes then rip them apart to make them fitting. Now a size 2x t-shirt is $20 at a thrift store; and keep in mind it's basically granny clothes now. As a disabled person and full time stident, how am I supposed to buy clothes when plus size stores are $50+ for a shirt and thrift stores have gone from $5 to $20? Walmart has become my go-to, sadly. I'm having to give my money to a megacorporation that hates people like me just to be able to dress myself.

Idk if other Goodwills price differently from the one near my home, but my Goodwill has relatively fair prices. All clothing items are priced based on type (i.e. shirts, pants, etc), not brand. A designer coat would be the exact same price as a cheap coat. And we have $1 Mondays where items of a certain tag color go for $1. I just hope this doesn’t change 😭

I recommend everyone joins their local Buy Nothing/Pay it Forward groups. These goodwill stores are for profit and always have been. Thanks to resellers they all upped their prices and now have no idea what they should appropriately charge for things. No one has time or the interest in checking each item online to see what they should be charging. But I HATE that they will throw out items, rip up clothes, and break things just so no one can have them for free, when they got them for free in the first place! The prices they charge should be to cover wages, and the store front and running of. That’s it.

This entire video was grinding my gears but the CANDLES is where I finally drew the line!! I'll admit I'm guilty of buying half burned candles from the thrift shops....but only because they price the big ones at 1$ locally! Candles half that size are 10$ in stores, so I may as well buy a nice smelling half burnt one. But 10$ for a HALF BURNT candle from GOODWILL?! That's absolutely insane. Seriously! Like, there's some things I understand have to be priced somewhat high (What I'm thinking of right now is a marble bust I found priced at 40 euros a little while ago) but most of the things show in this veidoe should not exceed 20$! For example, the folders shown in the video should hav had two different prices, one for them indivodually, that would stay the same for each one, and another one for if the customer is buying multiple!

One of my local thrifts has a "pricy" section with items that are vintage/made of real leather/exclusive and high-end brands etc. but that's because those items are actually worth that much or even more than that, I don't understand the price gouging that's been happening recently... There's a place near my home that does that too. It's called Baby Steps and it's run by the most amazing woman, Robin ❤ she's an earth angel, for sure. When my daughter was just a few months old, I went to go do laundry at a Laundromat. I had to step out to get something at the store and when I came back, ALL of her clothes were gone. Everything. I didn't know what to do because I didn't have the money to buy an entire new wardrobe for a baby. As a lot of you may know, it adds up quick. She was kind enough to give me more than I needed and I'll never forget what it meant to me. We need more women like her on this planet.

Thank you for doing that. People should stop donating to these places if they're price gouging. A couple of years ago the CEO of the industry organisation (in Australia) that thrift/op shops belong to wrote a letter that appeared in many newspapers around the country, including my local paper. He stated that thrift stores should be charging as much as they can to make more money for their organisations, and that if someone couldn't afford something they should ask if there was anything in their price range, as if a person in need needs more reason to add to their possible feeling of shame. It was a disgusting letter and I haven't donated to these stores since. If they are going to act like normal retail stores then they should buy their stock like other stores. This is not what these stores were set out to do, help low income people.

It went SO well that the ceo pass from wining 250k USD in 2020 to 750k USD last year 2023 ... All that lavish lifestyle, he doesnt want to Lost it, SO what he does, increase prices of free items cuz he is delusional and greedy ... People need to stop the donations there ASAP. Just donate directly to shelters ...thats it

Charging people hard-earned legal tender for used hygiene products is heinous! Most women's shelters and relief programs won't even accept that stuff as a DONATION because you really can't guarantee the health and safety of something that's been opened.

When it comes to efficiency and avoiding waste I'm probably close to the top of the list (Heck, I even identify as German! 🙃) but even I won't try to donate part-used bottles of shampoo and toiletries. The bottles get washed out and recycled of course, but unless the product can be re-used internally (e.g: Shampoo can also be used as hand soap) it gets disposed of via appropriate means. tl,dr: Unless it's genuinely unused _and has an intact, tamper-evident seal_ then offering it to Goodwill or anywhere else is *not OK.* 🧑⚖
