Gosh I wish my Goodwill had great prices like yours.....mine is very over priced...small town, big prices..I believe its because they know we can't go anywhere else...
@CanterburyCottage3 жыл бұрын
Oh, my gosh, Rose! I just wrote that in one of my responses to another viewer. I have found that some of the highest prices are in small towns. I live in Peoria, Illinois, which is a mid-size city. The prices vary a lot. I come across a lot of overpriced stuff, too, but I don’t buy it! Because I have a booth, I have to be able to make 2 or 3 times the initial cost for it to be worth my time. Find a thrifting friend and make a road trip to a bigger city!

Also, someone posted on a site that was a fellow that shops boots and stuff like that that the manager of the store he goes in is watching as the guys videos. So it's really strange and weird. I wish you all good luck in your redoing on stuff because as we said Goodwill and all the thrift shops are just going for it. I am in Central Florida -- Orlando, Winter Park in Maitland that whole bit. We have some thrift shops such as the Orlando Rescue Mission that prices items for people that need help. And you can get a cute blouse for two dollars. I mean seriously cute. And you could buy a table for four dollars. When my mom died seven years ago I donated everything in the house to the rescue mission. And they priced the items fairly and if the people were a little shy on the money, they lowered the price and then delivered it to them to help them out. That's what Thrift Shops are supposed to do. Not take everybody to the cleaners.

I sometimes think if every wood piece is painted white you have altered its original vintage look. The shelf with 3 shelves in it, I think, should stay original wood. I like colonial looks. The canisters should stay the color they are too. I think variety in color is fun instead of everything white or a specific green color. But thats just me. I was saddened to find out that eating on old dishes could cause Lead poisoning, like depression glass, uranium glass, China, etc. Only current dishes are non- lead and non-cobalt, etc. Vintage and antique dishes should only be decorative. Blahhhhh......

Too bad thrift stores have high prices now. I don't get it. People donate stuff to thrift store but now they charge 1/2 or more the cost of buying new. I've found stores like Ross and Marshalls are cheaper and the items are brand NEW. Goodwill is worst for high prices.

I’ve recently started watching you from Melbourne Australia. Our savers are sooo expensive. I’m also a Dumpster Diver. Have you ever checked the savers bin? I just can’t justify paying for decor when so much is thrown out. Vases, cane baskets, artificial flowers etc are scored every day thrown out. You’ll feel so much better spending $0!! Especially as you’re reselling it. I know it only may cost you $5 to make something, but all that time and effort you put in, you should definitely tell us what you sold it for :)
@CanterburyCottage3 жыл бұрын
Wow, Melbourne! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!🥰 I don’t have Savers in my hometown, only Goodwill and local charity thrift stores. I have not seen the Goodwill dumpsters, but I will certainly keep an eye out. I do find many things that people put out on the curb-I have scored some great furniture this way! Thanks for the suggestion about the prices. I will consider it. The reason that I haven’t is because prices vary so much by location.

Most people couldn’t appreciate the amazing deal I got recently, but I know you will. I’d been admiring a beautiful set of Pfaltzgraff dinner dishes for at least a year now. It didn’t have a price on it so I figured it was really expensive. My last visit at that store I decided to ask, and I was shocked at the answer! There was over a hundred pieces in the set, and I only paid a hundred dollars for a sixty one year old set. 😁 That is a Christmas gift for me! Lol
@CanterburyCottage2 жыл бұрын
Merry Christmas, Barbara! Your present came early! Under a dollar a piece is an amazing price for a complete set! Thanks! I did not know they could hide in wood. I will have to check it out. For the most part, I avoid upholstered furniture unless I know where it came from. I do believe there is a bedbug spray that you could use that kills bedbugs. Not sure how well it works.

I was given a wooden barrel that is about 2ft tall. I think it once held nails. It's weathered nicely but has a very rough texture to the point of being dangerous to handle due to splinters. I would love any suggestions you might have for re-purposing it. Thanks! Love your thrift haul! Jo
@CanterburyCottage3 жыл бұрын
I would try to sand off some of that roughness. Maybe, just hand sand it, so you don’t disturb the aged patina too much. You could fill it with packing foam or small cardboard boxes or old books , so that the height inside is almost to the top and put a nice plant in it. A spider or other drapey plant would look good. Or, you could top it with a wood round or tray to create a little table. You should be able to find a wood tray at the thrift store. You could just sit it on top or use construction adhesive for a permanent hold. Or, you could clean the inside and stuff it with pillows and a throw blanket that hangs over the edge a bit. If it is really rough on the inside, you could cover the inside with contact paper or fabric to keep it from snagging your pillows. Hope this helps!

I love St Vincent DePaul. They are great for furniture. I’ve purchased the most fantastic vtg oil paintings over the years. My mother was a painter so I have developed an eye for original paintings of all types. I frequently find chunky wood lamps which I chalk paint and distress, and same with the the wood hanging shelves. They are gorgeous chalk painted. Always looking for candlesticks, pottery and wicker. I recently found a gorgeous begonia leaf majolica tray for $2.95 and a McCoy large jardiniere for $4.95. I just discovered you and subbed to your channel. Love it. A nice departure from the twenty somethings videos.

I wish there was a way to attach pictures. I was pursuing Goodwill yesterday and ran across an original charcoal (colored) drawing of a horse on natural fibered linen or other similar material. It is then double matted. Love the use of natural fiber texture in the material or perhaps a specialized paper. It has a gift inscription on the back indicating that it is an original charcoal dated 1975 with the recipient's name and the artist's initials. It is fabulous in my estimation! $6 for a 14x 25 and I am betting the frame was created by the artist as well. Thought of you. 🤗

GRAB.... GRAB... GRAB....and lets make something that will stay out of the landfill... Thank you, Trudy! I almost said salt box but it didn’t look old enough. You’re right though! Thanks for the feedback!

Wouldn't it be embarrassingly funny if at 9:09 she holds up your old little ugly "lamp", that she's going to flip 🤔😅😁

the two green canisters would make wonderful pumpkins after spraying orange!..

That one base that you bought that was Square had to tall candle in it that's an expensive honora tapered candle in the middle those are very expensive they're probably like I think $25 you may get two or you may get one for that price but they're expensive so I hope you keep that candle and put put it to use I can't imagine that you would ever get rid of anything that was nice you do such a good job

Great finds! My faves are the two matching canisters and I, personally, love the green. Maybe a stenciled design on the side.

Regarding the brass tin, if you decide to keep the candle night light in there you could may keep an eye out for one e of those chandelier shades....that would be cute too.
@CanterburyCottage3 жыл бұрын
Oh, my gosh, I love that idea! I have some of those little shades, too! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

It’s definitely a fact that it’s almost impossible to find a wood candle holder at a thrift store. I’ve been looking for one for the past year, with no luck.
@CanterburyCottage2 жыл бұрын
You are RIGHT! I think that so many KZbinrs and DIYers have shared ideas on things to do with wood candlesticks that they are snatched up quickly. I’m also noticing that brass candlesticks are hard to find now, too. There was a time that wood and brass candlesticks were always on thrift store shelves.
@barbaraness45072 жыл бұрын
@@CanterburyCottage For sure! I did find 1 brass candlestick a couple of years ago.

If you do a RH up cycle on the canisters they will look fabulous! Also you can use putty to fix chips in the candle stick and then paint it. 😊 very beautiful collection of blue and white. I love how you style your home.
@CanterburyCottage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Yes, I am planning on using putty! You are obviously an experienced DIYer! I will have to look up the RH canisters. Thanks for the suggestion!
