Thank you all for watching and supporting my videos! I am shocked at how my channel is growing. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you all! This past week I was visiting a family member in the St. Louis hospital, so I wasn’t able to craft anything. I hope you will enjoy this video even though it is different from my previous ones. Next week, I will show what I did with my finds!

I have been watching thrift videos and diy videos for quite some time and I really enjoy your channel. You do not pan around really fast in the stores ... I think sometimes thrifters forget we are watchin them and constantly move the cameras around so fast. @CanterburyCottage

Oh, my gosh, Rose! I just wrote that in one of my responses to another viewer. I have found that some of the highest prices are in small towns. I live in Peoria, Illinois, which is a mid-size city. The prices vary a lot. I come across a lot of overpriced stuff, too, but I don’t buy it! Because I have a booth, I have to be able to make 2 or 3 times the initial cost for it to be worth my time. Find a thrifting friend and make a road trip to a bigger city!

Also, someone posted on a site that was a fellow that shops boots and stuff like that that the manager of the store he goes in is watching as the guys videos. So it's really strange and weird. I wish you all good luck in your redoing on stuff because as we said Goodwill and all the thrift shops are just going for it. I am in Central Florida -- Orlando, Winter Park in Maitland that whole bit. We have some thrift shops such as the Orlando Rescue Mission that prices items for people that need help. And you can get a cute blouse for two dollars. I mean seriously cute. And you could buy a table for four dollars. When my mom died seven years ago I donated everything in the house to the rescue mission. And they priced the items fairly and if the people were a little shy on the money, they lowered the price and then delivered it to them to help them out. That's what Thrift Shops are supposed to do. Not take everybody to the cleaners.

I sometimes think if every wood piece is painted white you have altered its original vintage look. The shelf with 3 shelves in it, I think, should stay original wood. I like colonial looks. The canisters should stay the color they are too. I think variety in color is fun instead of everything white or a specific green color. But thats just me. I was saddened to find out that eating on old dishes could cause Lead poisoning, like depression glass, uranium glass, China, etc. Only current dishes are non- lead and non-cobalt, etc. Vintage and antique dishes should only be decorative. Blahhhhh......

Too bad thrift stores have high prices now. I don't get it. People donate stuff to thrift store but now they charge 1/2 or more the cost of buying new. I've found stores like Ross and Marshalls are cheaper and the items are brand NEW. Goodwill is worst for high prices.

I’ve recently started watching you from Melbourne Australia. Our savers are sooo expensive. I’m also a Dumpster Diver. Have you ever checked the savers bin? I just can’t justify paying for decor when so much is thrown out. Vases, cane baskets, artificial flowers etc are scored every day thrown out. You’ll feel so much better spending $0!! Especially as you’re reselling it. I know it only may cost you $5 to make something, but all that time and effort you put in, you should definitely tell us what you sold it for :)
@CanterburyCottage

Wow, Melbourne! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!🥰 I don’t have Savers in my hometown, only Goodwill and local charity thrift stores. I have not seen the Goodwill dumpsters, but I will certainly keep an eye out. I do find many things that people put out on the curb-I have scored some great furniture this way! Thanks for the suggestion about the prices. I will consider it. The reason that I haven’t is because prices vary so much by location.

Most people couldn’t appreciate the amazing deal I got recently, but I know you will. I’d been admiring a beautiful set of Pfaltzgraff dinner dishes for at least a year now. It didn’t have a price on it so I figured it was really expensive. My last visit at that store I decided to ask, and I was shocked at the answer! There was over a hundred pieces in the set, and I only paid a hundred dollars for a sixty one year old set. 😁 That is a Christmas gift for me! Lol

Merry Christmas, Barbara! Your present came early! Under a dollar a piece is an amazing price for a complete set! You are so inspirational! I just found you earlier today and I’m so glad I did! So much fun seeing your shopping trips and getting ideas. I have 2 of those tall vegetable baskets. My husband wanted to get rid of them but I refused! 🤭 However, it’s 20 years later and I never could figure out just what to do with them. Somehow using tall stems never occurred to me? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I do hope you’ll show what you decide to do with yours! 🤗 Great video, and thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas! ❤️

Thanks! I did not know they could hide in wood. I will have to check it out. For the most part, I avoid upholstered furniture unless I know where it came from. I do believe there is a bedbug spray that you could use that kills bedbugs. Not sure how well it works.

I was given a wooden barrel that is about 2ft tall. I think it once held nails. It's weathered nicely but has a very rough texture to the point of being dangerous to handle due to splinters. I would love any suggestions you might have for re-purposing it. Thanks! Love your thrift haul! Jo
@CanterburyCottage
@CanterburyCottage 3 жыл бұрын
I would try to sand off some of that roughness. Maybe, just hand sand it, so you don’t disturb the aged patina too much. You could fill it with packing foam or small cardboard boxes or old books , so that the height inside is almost to the top and put a nice plant in it. A spider or other drapey plant would look good. Or, you could top it with a wood round or tray to create a little table. You should be able to find a wood tray at the thrift store. You could just sit it on top or use construction adhesive for a permanent hold. Or, you could clean the inside and stuff it with pillows and a throw blanket that hangs over the edge a bit. If it is really rough on the inside, you could cover the inside with contact paper or fabric to keep it from snagging your pillows. Hope this helps!

I love St Vincent DePaul. They are great for furniture. I’ve purchased the most fantastic vtg oil paintings over the years. My mother was a painter so I have developed an eye for original paintings of all types. I frequently find chunky wood lamps which I chalk paint and distress, and same with the the wood hanging shelves. They are gorgeous chalk painted. Always looking for candlesticks, pottery and wicker. I recently found a gorgeous begonia leaf majolica tray for $2.95 and a McCoy large jardiniere for $4.95. I just discovered you and subbed to your channel. Love it. A nice departure from the twenty somethings videos.

Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😊 I wish we had St. Vincent DePaul stores where I live. I always try to check them out when I am out of town. You have certainly found some great items over the years! With employees checking the internet for prices, it is getting harder to find those amazing deals-McCoy for $5! I always keep an eye out for original oil paintings but have only found a few smaller ones (excluding some that were painted by beginners!).

Yes, I do think I am lucky. I grew up in a small town and if you can’t find something at Walmart, you have to drive an hour to the nearest city. I’ve always been drawn to the ones that are rare to find either because if shape or texture. I would leave the green canisters as they are. Green is in. If they don’t sell then I would paint them. I wish there was a way to attach pictures. I was pursuing Goodwill yesterday and ran across an original charcoal (colored) drawing of a horse on natural fibered linen or other similar material. It is then double matted. Love the use of natural fiber texture in the material or perhaps a specialized paper. It has a gift inscription on the back indicating that it is an original charcoal dated 1975 with the recipient's name and the artist's initials. It is fabulous in my estimation! $6 for a 14x 25 and I am betting the frame was created by the artist as well. Thought of you. 🤗

New to your channel , came across your video and decided to watch. Glad I did, I been a thrifter since childhood not by choice but because we were poor. I went back to thrift shopping when I had kids, saved me big money as they grew out of clothes so fast. But now as an single empty nester I can finally decorate more to my taste but without the outrageous price. I am still learning my style lol, but thrift store and habitat store allow me the affordability to change out without paying full price. Thanks for the tips and ideas.

I think since Covid, many people have been looking for ways to being in a little extra money and have begun flipping thrifted items to sell on Facebook. I am one of them and I live and enjoy it so, so much. So channels like yours are invaluable to me and many others I think, as we are just beginning our journeys. Your ideas and support are so invaluable! Thank you so much for sharing your time, knowledge and creativity!!

Betty here.... You got some great finds! I live in Kansas City and Savers is my go-to thrift store. Don't forget Tuesdays are 30% off for age 55 and over and if you donate you will get a 20% off coupon! Happy thrifting!

Hi, Betty! I live in Peoria, Illinois. There are Savers in the Chicago area but not here. I was lucky to have visited on Tuesday, so I did get the discount! I thought the store I went to was a little overpriced, but prices vary from store to store. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

As a Carpenter with 30 yrs and 2 to 3 times all ( what I mean is I have 2 or 3 of each tool) the tools you need I don't feel I have to purchase wood as I always have scraps...but YOU...Sherri or Sherry I am not sure how you spell it.... are right sometimes you go into a thrift store and there is a piece...if you were to make it...even out of scrap wood...is a steal....unfortunately.... for me scrap wood is either used to make a project or heat my shop...so I hear you on the wood pieces...if you are not fortunate to have easy access to wood...grab it while you can...and as a carpenter knowing the price of wood all I can say is... GRAB.... GRAB... GRAB....and lets make something that will stay out of the landfill... All the best to you.... love your videos...I think I am running out of new ones...just means I will have to be patient...until you post a new one...but tons of thanks for your great content and inspiration...and you are also a very very very nice person!!!!

That tall wood basket is cool, but I would turn it over for a tall table, cover it with a glass tabletop or pizza pan. My home is small, so I'd be afraid to thrift since I have no place to put anything. Oh, outdoor lanterns at our ReStore go for nothing less than $75.

I got a wicker baby basket for free. My mom's neighbor was going to throw it away. I use it to put some of my books in and threw a droopy plant in it. It's so adorable. I love wicker items.

I love your lanterns, I almost sold one because the glass was broken, bought it that way at a yard sale for $3.00, so I had some glass cut at. I heals craft store to fit the lantern where the broken pieces was. That cost me $10.00, so a large lantern for $13.00! Not bad I say…

Definitely paint the containers! They are teal green and that means the 90s are calling and want their containers back...lol. An updated paint job would do them a world of good.

That one base that you bought that was Square had to tall candle in it that's an expensive honora tapered candle in the middle those are very expensive they're probably like I think $25 you may get two or you may get one for that price but they're expensive so I hope you keep that candle and put put it to use I can't imagine that you would ever get rid of anything that was nice you do such a good job

Regarding the brass tin, if you decide to keep the candle night light in there you could may keep an eye out for one e of those chandelier shades....that would be cute too.

It’s definitely a fact that it’s almost impossible to find a wood candle holder at a thrift store. I’ve been looking for one for the past year, with no luck.

You are RIGHT! I think that so many KZbinrs and DIYers have shared ideas on things to do with wood candlesticks that they are snatched up quickly. I’m also noticing that brass candlesticks are hard to find now, too. There was a time that wood and brass candlesticks were always on thrift store shelves.
