Your silk blouses are actually very washable by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. (It's actually better for the fabric and better for you not to be exposed to the chemicals used in dry cleaning.) To help preserve the color, rinse your blouses in a basin of cool water with one cup of white vinegar mixed in. The vinegar will help to remove the soap completely and also works to preserve the color as it is a natural mordant. :)

I would love to learn more about proper hand washing so thank you for these tips! I definitely hand wash many of my rayon blouses but I just never know how safe it is to treat my silk ones in the same way. I also really need to buy a proper steamer for "ironing" such things too, but that always gets put to the bottom of the list!

TheClosetHistorian Vinegar was once used to neutralize alkaline soaps - with modern detergents it’s unnecessary. What’s more, acid will damage natural fibers, make them brittle. Just stick to a special detergent that specifically says it’s meant for silk and wool. Cool water, no soaking, press dry in a towel, no wringing. Dry lying flat, if possible,, and store protected from sunlight. That’s about it.

My mum (born 1922 and a taylor) always said: "silk is a natural fiber, throw it in the wash at 40C or 60C but with a mild spin cycle" She made all her blouses and all made in silk. No problems. She never took them to the dry cleaners. And my silk blouses and scarves gets washed in 40C with the rest of my clothes but with a normal spin cycle. Never had any problems either. :)

The oversize (especially long, grey or black and vintage looking) wool coat was *the thing* in the 80s for the alternative kids to wear. I often borrowed my dad's original WWII navy peacoat as well. So great to see you pulling back the veil on the 80s. I'd forgotten how heavily we leaned on the fashion from 30-60 years prior back then. We used to have full on vintage rental places in Seattle packed with early-mid century clothing. Did not appreciate that fully at the time.

Those are some lovely finds - that first coat is swoon-worthy! Great idea for a diy too, both the sweater you've already made and the dress. Must remember that as an option. As for myself, I keep bringing home wool sweaters and cardigans. Men's section cashmere is even cheaper than women's which is just ridiculously cheap. Though Sweden is not having the winter weather it should - about twenty degrees too warm :(

I love what you said about how you are all "More and more". I can relate. I love buying and wearing vintage slips. My favorite slips are silk. They work in the summer and the winter. As far as dry cleaning....I wash my cashmere sweaters(about 70?)and my silk clothing in those meshy bags. The washer needs to be set on cold water and gentle/hand washing cycle, My friend and I love to use Pantene. It cleans and makes everything soft. When you take the items out of the meshy bags give them a shake then you put them on a drying rack. Easy peasy. BTW the skirts fit you so well and look beautiful on you.

I would love to see how you refashion that dress into a skirt, sometimes the waistbands on those types of refashions confound me. I love the whole haul but I must admit that royal blue coat makes my heart sing lol I found a modern royal blue wool coat at a Habitat for Humanity thrift store two years ago that I wear to death styled both vintage and modern business casual. And I thrifted an 80’s vintage royal blue coat almost identical to yours at the tail end of winter last year that I am looking forward to wearing this year. I also have a black based plaid wool coat, a maroon bottom calf length Pendleton coat, and a 50’s vintage cream coat that fits perfectly...but I am considering dying it because cream in that shade makes me look a bit sickly. I have a really hard time not buying all the wool coats! I also have a big box of vintage coats in great condition that do not fit me but...ya know...couldn’t pass them up at an estate sale. I have a weakness for wool you might say. And also a weakness for any top of the body layer-cardigans, blazers, jackets, coats.

You look so sophisticated and seasonal! I really love your vintage finds! London has poor vintage. £15-£25+ for vintage and it's mostly 90s fashion 🙄 but the 80s stuff is a great idea! Great video and if you got any thrifting vintage tips that would be good too ♥️
@TheClosetHistorian6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lele! I was surprised at the prices whenever I went thrifting in London, which I didn't do often on my student budget. I think most of the good stuff just gets funneled into the "proper" vintage shops by the professional sellers in big cities who then know how to price it accordingly. What would you think about making a lower neckline on the 80's dress? I've got some great ones, and trying to figure out how to make them more flattering.
@TheClosetHistorian6 жыл бұрын
For me it's not really about the neckline, I quite like a higher neckline, but more the extra blousy-ness and the general feel of poly on my skin not being my fave. I actually think if this dress were silk or rayon I would just take it in a little and wear it as is with a black belt and more 40's-ish accessories. Belts do wonders sometimes, but I think I would have to know more about the specific shapes of the dresses in question to be of better help!

Slips? Heck, I’ve bought actual panties at the thrift store. They’re new. They don’t take them as donations except from retailers. So they from damaged packages and dead stock. They also sell open packages of incontinence products. Sounds really questionable - but if you look, the multi-packs inside are still sealed. And when it comes to the pads it’s way cheaper to buy an open pack of large incontinence pads for human needs, than buying “pee pads” intended for pets. They’re great as disposable seat covers for your vehicle too. Nice to have a couple just in case.

I've never thought you talked too fast, but I've heard (in general and from my US friends) that we Canadians speak much faster than Americans (maybe to keep the hot air inside in the winter?) So maybe you're just a natural Canadian-speaker and you didn't know it?

More and more I find I would much rather be a Canadian, so it's good to know I have a foot in the door already ;)

That’s exactly what I’ve been saying about the wool coats! I found a beautiful burgundy wool princess coat at my local goodwill for 11 dollars half off on those tags! Also, apologies if you’ve answered this many times before, but how tall are you? I’m a petite gal and a lot of long skirts and coats tend to drown me out.

Princess coats are the dream, I'd love to find one! I am 5 foot five inches tall, so pretty average (apparently the US average for women is 5 ft 4 in). I always prefer longer skirts on my particular shape, I just like something about the proportions for whatever reason. I'm not the best at knowing how to dress others, I'd love to learn more about styling someday!

curious about something- what is the point of a vintage slip? like waht does it specifically do? I wear a lot of vintage stuff but i've never gotten a slip cause I didn't think it was needed. But you seem to mention it a lot so maybe i'm missing out! :O

Slips help smooth everything out. In the Winter time they provide an extra layer for warmth but they are also a barrier between skin and rougher/itchy fabrics- (unlined wool!). In the warmer months, slips once again offer great protection, but instead of protecting our skin from itchiness, they protect the garment from our perspiration. Also, some Summer dresses can be on the slightly sheer side, so the slip helps with that as well. Lastly, there is something so pleasing about wearing a slip while getting ready or even coming home after a long day and just stripping down to said slip. But that's just me. Happy slipping!

@@PoppyDorada Just want to thank you also for that explanation. For some reason I never bought a slip in all my years of buying vintage. My Mum wore them and now I understand why so can't wait to buy some next time I go thrifting ...cheers :)

I agree with all of these points! I started wearing them because of sheer dresses and kept collecting them thanks to scratchy wool skirts :) I'd love to find more.

Plus, what's wrong with adding another layer of beauty, just for beauty's sake? To me the point of getting dressed is to create something for the day, hopefully something of beauty or inspiration; I don't do so to be considered well dressed or fashionable. Style is an inside job.
