Best rule of thumb for designing something, Form Follows Function. Set up what you want the spaces to be first, then start adding the flair. Instead of just visualizing what you want figure out the why of things being what they are. Like with the Wizards tower and the crystal growths, you can explain it as magic overflowing and crystalizing around the structure. Then using that base of understanding it allows you to get a better grasp of what you want it to represent.
@nathancarver7179 Жыл бұрын
Hihi, I build e'ry now and again. Some pointers you may or may not appreciate: 1) I'd recommend Gemspark Walls for glowing -- you had the right idea, but not the right layer, ya get me? You can put the walls behind tiles, and they'll produce light much the same way 2) I find it helps to first build with some scaffold tile, use wood or dirt or stone to build the root structure. I often go into builds with NO idea what I'm actually building, until it's mostly finished. 3) Windows can be done in a lot of ways. If you just want something simple, you can just add a frame around it, and place platforms on the top and bottom. Slime banners look like curtains, and if you wanted to be extra fancy, that's where you start getting actuators and such 4) Having some wall variation really does wonders for appearance. Add a trim, separate the room into 3 different wall types, add some windows, add a weird pattern, etc. Get funky with it. Remember that you can replace that at any time, nothing is final. 5) Just as much as walls, having some different tiles really helps. I find what happens a lot is having all the surrounding tiles be the same feels awkward, and it doesn't accurately represent what the interior would look like, all the time. I often use softer tiles like woods, stuccos, etc. for the flooring, since that seems like it would be more comfortable, but again, toy around. 6) Variation in lighting can create a good atmosphere, if you have a room slightly darker than the rest it gives the appearance that it's less used or something, not everything needs to be in fullbright. Just a few other things as well.. - Yes, most players absolutely miss the full experience of Terraria, by running straight through the game and ignoring everything that's not optimal, it's truly sad - There are ~4 other flails past the Dao (Drippler Crippler, Flower Pow, Flairon, Solar Eruption) - Actuators have always been sold by the mechanic (since they were introduced in 1.1, from the looks of it)

Holy crap, man, your gripes about art/building *speaks to my soul.* Able to visualize it so perfectly, so crystal clear, so phenomenally vividly, and yet, the thing that holds us back boils down to structure, the goddamn fundamentals that every artist goes "you have to figure it out yourself" or some crap to if you ask them. Positively infuriating... You and I are probably similar in what we're 'good' at in that regard, too: chaos. Organic shapes. Natural-looking things that don't *really* have a lot of structure to them. I find I gravitate towards landscaping and the like cause of this. The next time you run out of ideas on what to do, try some of that! Use the goblin's new Rubblemaker and the special "natural" wall blocks you can make at a workbench/heavy workbench in a graveyard, try decorating the landscape around your home areas. It *really* brings places to life if you give them that extra touch of love. (Speaking of graveyards, another thing you might want to do would be to make an actual place to *do* that graveyard crafting. Either a literal graveyard or maybe something more unusual...) On another topic-- I've been... Working on a video of my own for a long time now, that's ended up at a similarly extremely slow pace like this series of yours, due to the constraints of the challenge and my way of playing slowly and methodically. Unlike you here though I'll probably stuff it all into one video since I've already recorded 95% of it at the time of this writing, whenever I get back to it... Honestly though? I actively dread how much footage I'm gonna have to sift through lol. How do you do it? The crazy amount of footage you're left with, editing livestreams?
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
I have a bit of a "I can only work on one thing for so long" brain where I struggle working on any one thing for prolonged periods of time, which you would think would make editing videos like this stupidly difficult. But what I do is set a goal for myself. Say one day I decide "I'm going to find all the major story beats or important bits." Then I can start thinking of a basic structure for the video story wise and maybe start drafting a script. From there it's just little by little picking away at it. If you're able to sit down for hours on end and edit, great. But I find it most useful to decide what it is you're going to accomplish within a certain time frame [within reason] and tell yourself to take a break or work on something else afterwards. I find that makes this projects much more manageable.

To be good at building it's like learning drawing, the more you train (with references it's quicker), the less you struggle to build your ideas because you know how to tackle the problem you have in mind, you've already done it before or done something similar. And each time you can spice up your builds with new ideas and master (remember) what you've liked which will now being incorporated to your building palettes/techniques. To create your own way of building things, you have to mix all the thing you learned/copied from others and your own testing. There is no shame in copying, it's actually the best way to learn and getting inspired. And honestly, I already find your builds quite fine actually

For queen slime a very good strat for doing her even immediately after wall of flesh is having max run speed and running in a straight line in the second phase and slow walking. Her patterns always come from her and she always follows you in a predictable pathing. So there’s always a specific spot you can be during any attack in a straight line. So, i would like to give you a pro building tip: you can buy the illuminant paint from the painter if he's in the graveyard biome(you can create one by placing about 7 tombstones next to eachother), and use it on those crystal things(they still won't give out any light, they will just look like they're glowing). Next, you want to place a few amethyst gemspark walls behind those crystals for purple glow(just make sure they don't peek out), and voila, you got yourself some actually glowing crystals!

People do fishing instead of mining, for much the same reason you are. They don't want to cause the Mechs to spawn in, until they're good and ready. The only ways to get the ore, are to either break the altars, or fish. And as you already know, one popped altar, now allows for mech bosses. And in the harder settings, it's particularly reassuring to have titanium or adamantium armor, instead of, oh I don't now, hellstone armor when going up against said Mechs. lol The rest of your comments already got you covered with the newish illuminant coating, but a few other options I can think of to help you get glowy bits is meteor blocks (they glow, but are a bit metallic), martian plating (don't have access at this time, and are more silvery), occasional (and sometimes painted) gemspark blocks sprinkled in to cast lighting, strategically placed gemspark walls for the same reason, painted glass, and stained glass(?) but I don't remember how to make the stuff, and one other thing on the tip of my tongue as it were, but I just can't remember it at this time. Maybe something with actual gem blocks or some-thing *struggles to think of it, but then tries to look it up instead* - Looks like gems and glass wall make stained glass, but I'm not sure that was the thing I was looking for.

I also try to fully build one part of each build, maybe a room or entryway, before moving on to the framing. It acts as sort of an 'anchor' for my sense of scale and placement when doing the rest of the build. This is the video that introduces me to your channel. Your comments about not being good at building are wrong. A good builder is anyone who can build in a game and despite how pretty or ugly it is, continues to build anyway, committed to getting better, or working with what they have when they have it. This is no different with art. All artists from my perspective hate their art because they see imperfections that nobody else sees. Instead of looking at your faults as making your build ugly or pretty or bad or good, look at them as what gives the build character.

it is, but my point was that it's the only one that you have to go through a lot of trouble to get, including a boss fight, while the others you kinda just get

For the build maybe try using Aetherium blocks maybe that might fix the glow affect your trying to go for, you can obtain it by pouring water into the shimmer for the blocks and then mining it- if its not what you want just drop the blocks back into the shimmer to return it to the shimmer
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I totally forgot about those blocks, will have to try them out.

every run i ALWAYS do fishing right from the start, i actually find that when i fish pre-hardmode and get super geared up for fishing, that fishing for the hardmode ores takes me significantly less time than simply mining
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
Really? See I've been fishing this entire run, like, a LOT more than I usually do.
@pulsss Жыл бұрын
@@Throarbin it might be that i just fish A LOT and tend to not realize how long im fishing for. so maybe it does take longer lol idk,

I get the building struggle, u visualise every detail of something and what comes out is an abomination that should never have seen the light of day in any world
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
Yeah, pretty much. A few tutorials help with Terraria builds though, so at least I can usually avoid abominations

When I was a kid, for whatever reason, the Dao of Pao was a *mandatory* part of early hardmode progression.

You can use the shimmer to get alternative fishing gear, auch as earing to tackle box, tackle box to line, and line to earing.

You can remove shadows from a block with Illuminant Coating and it looks like its glowing
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
I tried that with the crystals. Though I want something that actually creates a lighting/glowing effect rather than certain blocks just being brighter

Oi i just discovered this channel and already fell in love with it. The idea of this series really fits with my play style and i can also take some inspiration from it. But um, why don't you break the altars for hm ores? I thought that breaking them in 1.4.4 no longer randomly convert stone in to infected blocks?
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
It doesn't randomly infect blocks any more. Though I do lay out why I don't want to enter hardmode at the start. It's more for the spirit of the challenge that I don't. But glad you enjoyed it!

the building technique isn’t that bad tbh its like creating a rough draft and slowly improving. You’ve adapted a very famous art technique in your building.

You can place gemspark walls behind the crystals to actually make them glow since illuminant paint will only brighten the crystal blocks themselves

Yeah, I tried placing gemspark wall behind them but couldn't do much since the wall would stick out.

The hardmode summoner weapon that you can fish is probably the Sanguine Staff. Only difference is the fact that you need to defeat a mini boss for it, but I think it's worth the effort cuz it holds up even for empress of light
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was my point with it. All the others just fish it up while the summoner has to fight a boss, lol
