Throbak SLE-101 PAF Clone Pickup Demo

Yet another nice demo! You sure have put a lot of work into this. Thank you for that! From your demos, these Throbak SLE-101's seem to have a little bit of the characteristics of all the other pickups I've listened to in your demos. That may be a good thing because you get the best of all worlds or it could be of the opinion that they lack a defining character that sets them apart from the others. The PAF pickup allure is a murky subject as there are many versions with varying components and construction contributing to different tone characteristics that could all be a called a PAF pickup. They all sound different in different guitars as well which further complicates things. When someone says they want PAF-style pickups...good that narrows it down to a few dozen or so.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, the number of variables is crazy, and there definitely is no one single PAF “sound.” What I will say is that the one quality that seems to be ever-present in vintage PAF’s (and this is hearsay, because it’s only from clips I’ve heard, I’ve never played a real set) that many modern reproductions lack is a sort of “granular” sound…they’re articulate, but GRAVEL-Y. It leads to some extremely interesting overtones, and I suspect it’s probably due to the inconsistent manufacturing standards of the day as compared to modern times (of magnets, wire diameters and compositions, etc). Some modern builders manage to capture this sound, others don’t.
