Ben Bram has worked with them as 'the 6th member' since the Sing Off. The Making of Evergreen, a mini documentary, actually shows them working out this very arrangement! It is about 14 minutes long and we all would be happy to watch it again with you if you choose. But do at least watch it yourselves. It is a great insight into why they are so in tune. Filmed by Kirstie's fiancee, a videographer.

The background to the film is that they had 2 weeks to arrange and record the whole album. The camera was invited in for the second week as a "Fly on the wall". You get t see them arranging The Prayer as well as several other songs we all know well. Kirsties reaction when she first hears the almost complete "The Prayer" is absolutely PRICELESS!

You would probably find The Recording of Evergreen interesting. It's a 17 minute documentary about their recording process. It includes the Prayer. Lovely reaction! Your dad was a great addition! Pentatonix often takes pride in the fact that they can have multiple generations of families at their shows. They have often been told "this is the only thing me and my grandma can agree on" etc. Having the conservative aunt bonding with the queer alternative teenager over this band. What they do extend further than their lovely talents. What you talk about at the end with love and respect. That is the key. The have talked about how it's like being in a 5 way marriage and they talk about how they are very intentional in working on that communication. They always try every idea for example, talk openly about how you have to leave ego at the door (and also acknowledge that it's easier said than done sometimes). They have talked about how they respect each other and the end product and the knowledge of that baseline of respect makes any waves easier to handle. They are not naive and have been very intentional in fostering that enviroment for themselves. You really see that in the Recording of Evergreen video.

Scott first met Ben Bram in college at USC. Ben was an alum who was working as a house arranger for The Sing-Off. He also helped Scott form PTX by reaching out to Avi, who he knew through the California acapella scene, and used his TSO Yale contacts to get a hold of Kevin after seeing his YT video at a friend’s engagement party. After they won TSO, he became their primary collaborator and producer. He’s the sixth person winning the two arrangement Grammys alongside the group.

Kirsty, Mitch and Scott grew up together in Texas and have been singing and performing together in plays and school choirs since Middle School. They found Kevin online when they were doing the singoff on TV and desperately needed a beat boxer in order for them to have a chance at winning, which they did. The story behind Kevin becoming their beatboxer is absolutely mind-blowing. If you want to find out more about that, check out the KZbin video entitled 'Kevin's 5th' where Scott introduces Kevin to the world and explains how Kevin ended up in Pentatonix. To give you a hint of how interesting this is, Kevin is a Yale pre-med graduate, and I'll leave it at that. And of course Matt replaced Avi when he left the group amicably.

*ABSOLUTELY* have Dad back! And yes, they are friends. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie grew up together and attended the same high school. They recruited Kevin from a KZbin video and met him in person for the first time the day before their audition for The 2011 Sing-Off competition. Matt is the "new" guy, he replaced Avi in 2017. The 12 Sing-Off episodes would be great to react to, and give a whole introduction and background to the individuals as a newly formed group. You watch them learn and grow together to become the artists they are today.

The recording engineer for Pentatonix said they often layer the cuts to make it sound fuller. They still sing it amazingly in person. You should watch the making of Evergreen album…evidently, this was the first album where all 5 of them were in the studio recording it. They usually record their parts, send them to the engineer, who sends them to a guy in Connecticut, who mixes it. Check out the reaction of Restitutto (sp), who interviewed Ben Bram. In the video, the making of Evergreen, it was the first time Kirstie heard the finished recording.

1. I actually know the song "Tammy". Debbie Reynolds. Lovely song. 2. They have albums/EPs outside Pentatonix. "Love" by Kirstin Maldonado. "Renegade" by Kevin Olusola. "Future Friends" by Superfruit (Mitch and Scott). "Roses" by Messer (Mitch) plus a bunch of singles. Scott also have a couple of singles. Avi has several after he left PTX, but I'm only familiar with "I'll Get By". 3. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch grew up together. They recruited Kevin and Avi to compete in "The Sing-Off". They only met the day before the audition. And then Matt joined after Avi left. They do get along well; they're like family. No ego, just a group of friends who are the biggest fans of each other's talents. They have no problem of letting each other shine. 4. For a long time they didn't use any instruments, except Kevin's cello and Lindsey Sterling's violin. And their arrangements can always be performed with five voices/beatboxing. But I think starting around 2020-1 they started to use more instruments (still very occasionally) and make arrangements that would require backing tracks, which are still only their voices, but there will be background vocals in the backing tracks and they will sing the harmonies for the melody line live. 5. On their arranging process, from an interview: MC: How is material chosen? Who does the arranging and how do you take a well-established pop hit and make it a Pentatonix tune? Hoying: We pick a song with a great melody that we can agree on. Five of us sit in a circle. Kevin starts with a beat and Matt will sing the bassline. Then we improvise the lead and backgrounds over that and record voice memos to capture those raw moments. It’s really messy, super sloppy. We give those improvisations to *Ben Bram,* who translates everything to paper with all the little details and mistakes. He takes what we come up with organically and creates a structured arrangement that is “singalongable.” Then we work out the other details later. I consider “Hallelujah” our best arrangement ever and it was the biggest song in our history. We sang through it only one time before Ben cleaned it up. Mitch Grassi: It’s a crazy process with crazy chemistry. We put a phone in the middle of that circle and stumble through the song, make up parts as we go along, and then everything has to be cleaned up so it sounds listenable. During COVID social-distancing situation, they arrange online via Zoom. Ben would screen-share the music sheet of the arrangement and members of Pentatonix would tell him or "sing" him their ideas.

Fortunately, if you're interested, they actually all do have solo work available (other than Matt, though he has said he's working on some). Mitch, under the name "Messer," has an EP "Roses" along with several (amazing) single releases, Kirstin's album is called "Love," Scott's album is called "Parallel," Scott and Mitch together put out an EP under the name "Superfruit," called "Future Friends." Kevin has a KZbin channel with several great covers arranged and performed by him. Avi Kaplan (former bass not in this video) has an album "Floating on a Dream." It really is remarkable that after 12 years (and longer than that for the trio, Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie who were friends and sang together in high school - and Scott and Mitch even earlier from theater work as kids), that they have managed to maintain great relationships with no major upheavals other than Avi leaving 6 years ago with little to no visible drama, and Matt joining. Like their original song "The Lucky Ones," lyrics say: Look how far we've come And it was all so unexpected We were broke and we were young But somehow we stayed connected So we hold on to our better days 'Cause easy come, easy go away Still can't believe we were the lucky ones Look how far we've come Hand in hand, we stumble and fall Then we stand, once and for all And now we dream with our eyes open We're unbroken

Oh, yeah! If they're interested in hearing them doing solo work, those albums are all excellent. That's one of the things that's so amazing with PTX... every one of them is talented enough that they could be leading/fronting their own group, and combining all that talent results in a whole that's even greater than the sum of its outstanding parts. Mitch is a natural contratenor; he has a range of six octaves plus one note. Celine Dion's part for "The Prayer" is smack in the middle of Mitch's sweet spot. I think he's in head voice here, but it could be chest; it isn't obvious when he changes registers. We used to say that if Pentatonix used instruments you'd see the instruments in the video, but that changed with "Holidays Around The World," their 2022 Christmas album, which had as its theme collaborations with artists from other countries, other continents. And at the time they were filming the official videos for the album COVID travel restrictions were still in place, so their collaborators couldn't be there to film with them. So "Prayers For This World," for instance, has a full string orchestra behind it, because that's who Pentatonix was collaborating with in that song, but you only know it if you hear the strings and check the credits. That said, "The Prayer" was released on their 2021 Christmas album, "Evergreen." This is all a cappella, all Pentatonix. They may have used some layering to make the harmonies sound fuller, but that's all.

You need to buy the new Pentatonix Christmas Album for your dad - greatest hits. They do Christmas songs like no other. There is a behind the scenes video for this as well that shows up they set this up. There are a number of videos from behind the scenes on tour as well - Mitch Scott and Kirstie have known each other since childhood, and they truly care about each other as family, and it shows in their live performances especially. More than a decade later, that joy shines through.

Glad you mentioned organ. When I heard this the first time at about the 3:10 mark when the sun is now out and everyone is singing 'SKY ' it sounded to me like a pipe organ. Just astounding. I do think they layered their vocals so there may be more than 5 voices at times, but no instruments, Just How?!?!? Scott, Mitch and Kirstie have been singing together for 15 or so years. I wonder sometimes if they share one soul. When they were all at Scott's house practicing between making The Sing Off and before filming, Kevin's beat boxing was so real that Scott's parents asked him if he bought some drums.

Yes, they have the friendship gig in spades! It’s evident in their tight vocals in the studio and on the stage!

A supergroup they remind me of would be the Traveling Wilburys. That was a group of superstars with little to no egos whenever they got together.

Check out Pentatonix - The Recording of Evergreen on YT. It shows them making this Christmas album including recording The Prayer. FYI: Scott, Kirstin and Mitch were friends in High School, and have been singing together since.

What an excellent analysis!!!! You guys are great!! Professional singer here. I cannot express enough how fantastic I think Pentatonix is. They are my favorite and this song is one of my most loved of their covers. Thank you for a very educational and thorough analysis although, I bet if you had more time, you could have delved further. I agree, I could listen to a solo album of each singer from this group. But I do love the blend of their voices best.

I definitely vote yes for having your Dad back...especially for more Pentatonix!!! And by the way, I am 62 (almost 63) and not only do I remember the Honeymooners...I remember (and have heard many times) the song Tammy 😉

HEY! Some of us have been around for a time, ok a lot of time. But the dynamic of the voices of PTX are truely amazing, each one has done solo work, and the level of talent is still there when they work together it is ALL about the music and what will sound the best when it is performed. Watch a few of the behind the secense videos and you will be blown away by how it is done. And on the seeing PTX LIVE, pay the extra money for the "Meet and Great" VIP experience it will amaze you when they do the song you would swear has to be production effects live with no mikes and still sound like it is computer editted or reverbed or layered with no way to do that. It is just the power of great vocal talent and the ability to perform.

Kevin the beat boxer plays cello. He plays with Lindssey Stirling and Pentatonix in Radioactive (cover from Imagine Dragons). You should watch it. And Kevin created celloboxing!

Did you say your Dad is 81? I’m 74 and I wish I looked so young. I think your Dad would love to hear their Evolution of Music. It was done quite a while back so it only goes up to 2010 but I think it has something for all three of you. One of the reasons they sound so good together is that Mitch, Scott and Kirsty have known each other and sung together since high school. Kevin came in to the group when they did the Sing Off as did Avi so they were there since 2011. Of course Avi left in 2017 and then Matt came into the picture. These guys were his idols so when he auditioned he already knew most of the arrangements. They tour a lot so they are in each others lives a lot. I love your Dad and I would love to see him pop in once in a while. I just subscribed so I hope to go down this PTX whole with you. Speaking of tears I always cry when I see their Imagine video. I don’t know what you have reacted to so far but Hallelujah is great. They also do original songs as well as their own solo stuff. Avi has some great songs on his own. Check out Change On The Rise. Enjoyed this reaction.

They will occasionally use the piano, Scott, or the cello, Kevin. If there is an instrument it is front and center. If you think you hear an instrument and cannot see it then it is voices only.

More Dad! I'd like him to be there to hear them sing "I saw three ships come sailing..." from two years ago's Christmas album. The reason they are so sublimely harmonious is because the trio of Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) have sung together since junior high school twenty years ago. Kevin, the beatboxer, also sings when he isn't providing percussion. He has a lovely high tenor voice. Matt sings base, but also has a dramatic baritone range with the glorious tonal quality of a French horn. Since they are, themselves, the instruments, what they have to be able to do is sing each note with precision, so we hear all the colors of their voices. But if you hear an instrument you will see it in the video. Recommend: Mary Did You Know.
