I'm a 72 year old Viet Nam Veteran, who has seen and done many horrors for "My Country". I've loved these Kids since their first performance on the Sing Off. I consider them to be musical savants without peers. But watching a sweet and gentle soul like yours, respond with joy and an expertise, only enhances my experience and helps to remove me from my dark memories of the past. Thank you, God Bless and Keep you in His Sweet Embrace. I like their performances of "Amazing Grace" and Scot's "Thank You".

The bedrock that Kevin and Matt are laying down to allow Scott and Mitch to dance above is flawless.
@rmac10423 жыл бұрын
Most people don’t realize Mitch is a true countertenor-thus the ease he has of singing with such soft passion with the timbre his voice has. The “Wall Of Sound” at the climax of the song-and the ritenuto! Wow! Kirstie is really busy on this with the stacked harmony along with Scott and Mitch! She’s just so awesome! This deserves the 4th Grammy for PTX!
@amycunningham1830 Жыл бұрын
Is it the “Wall of Sound” that gives me the chills/heart pinch right there or the specific notes of their chord progression? I want to understand how they can make my body feel sensations that I love, and I try to hear that chord at the climax in my head even when I’m not listening to music. You seem to maybe understand music. This song has me hooked. Especially the wall of sound parts

One of many things that astonishes me about this group is their harmonized riffs. In the middle of a word - often in the middle of a single vowel, in less than a quarter second! They hit six different notes, in rapid succession, and every one of them is crystal clear. They don't emphasize the fact that they're doing it. They treat it like it's just a decoration on the melody. But listen for it and start noticing how amazing they are! There's no 'slide', no instants when they're seeking the right pitch, etc. They are just - singing one note, and then suddenly singing another. And even when they're hitting - (If I heard this correctly) - a complicated mix of thirty-second and twenty-fourth notes on the same bar(!) the rhythms are absolutely precise. There isn't any 'improv' going on in those riffs, they know exactly what they're about to sing. In a way, they remind me of a Japanese savant who listened to a Dizzy Gillespie trumpet solo and sat down and wrote the piece on sheet music - note-perfect, And then played it, precisely and exactly reproducing it. That seems like missing the point when you think of Gillespie as an improv soloist, but now imagine five people doing something that complex, all in harmony, all exactly on rhythm. You can't improvise that! Each and every one of them has to know exactly where they're going to get there together.

Scott, especially, sings with his hands all the time. Ages ago, they covered Say Something (Christina Aguilera), and for the video, the effect they were going after was of an old painting. At about 2:50 in their video they hit that chord and they sound like an organ. Just jaw dropping. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were in high school choir and also did local theater together. They have been in Pentatonix for ten years and they sang together at least five more years before that. Their high school choir teacher did help them develop their blend. Could you imagine having those three at the same time in high school?

I loved the half Italian comment. I, too am half Italian. The other half is Irish (Scots-Irish to be precise. Oddly each of my parents has precisely the same background, ethnically, that I do, each being half and half as well.) My Italian side had the same reaction to Scott singing in the home tongue as yours did. Hearing him sing that deeply in more of a lead line was not new for me. He does the same in Sound of Silence. Hearing him do so in Italian was a new experience for me first time I heard this. But he does it so beautifully.

This outdoes the Bocelli/Dion version both for production (to be fair, they simply stood and sang) but also for vocals. Five people making as much sound as the orchestra and the singers, but also telling the story. Far more inspiring. I love Andrea Bocelli and have for years, but this version upgraded from the original. Scott is singing in Italian and Mitch is actually translating again like the original. And don’t forget they will do this live on tour. One thing especially good about PTX is they never record anything they can’t do live. I enjoyed your reaction/review
