I'll third this suggestion. It's a really fun and informative look at just how the group works together to produce the "whole package" they want and just how precise they are with their tone, wording and sound. The Prayer is another one ( also a part of the Evergreen Album that is highlighted in the Recording of Evergreen.) that shows off the trio's vocal abilities. 90's Dance Medley is fairly new, Creep ( use the unmasked version from the Masked Singer), I Rise ...either use the visualizer version or find one of the fancams from a recent ( September 2023) concert.

The Grammy's category "BEST INSTRUMENTAL ARRANGEMENT" was changed to "BEST ARRANGEMENT, INSTRUMENTAL OR A CAPPELLA" so this PTX arrangement could be nominated and they won. They also won the next year after with their arrangement of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy".

I've seen them live and it's so impressive how they sound nearly the same as they do recorded, they're so consistent. There's one song they used to do off mic, their original "Run to You", relying on the crowd to stay silent. It's really beautiful (and at a show in Jacksonville FL, they sang it loud enough, off mic, to drown out a bunch of homophobic protestors that showed up to harass Mitch and Scott. It was a really powerful moment). Btw, Kirstie has said "Kirstie rhymes with thirsty", so that's how you pronounce her name (I think she's fine with Kirstin or Kirstie) 🙂

Yes, she's fine with either. I've noticed that Pentatonix tends to use "Kirstie" more often, but that could simply be the result of Mitch and Scott having been childhood friends with her.

@@thatsroughbuddy- Listening to it again, with my earphones that are especially good with bass, I think you're right. In the video, Avi's mouth is open and his lips aren't moving during that part, and I'm hearing a low rumble from him, almost like his overtone singing but without the high whistle notes on top. To double check, I tried going to the private performance, but the sound isn't properly balanced and Avi had a LOT more beard, which completely obscured his lips. I tried a live stream of a recent performance with Matt, but ALL their lips were obscured by the microphones and Matt's bass is less obvious than Avi's, so that was no help either. Frustrating.

You need to watch the official video for Daft Punk even if you don’t post it. They recorded it on an iPad. Won a Grammy for it. The video is so fun. So often fan videos don’t capture everything and have people coughing or bad mics or whatever. You should watch one of their Evolution videos. My favorites are Evolution of Music, Evolution of Michael Jackson, or their Evolution of Rihanna. These they record in one take. They know they are going to have to perform these songs in concert and on TV appearance so they generally use minimal effects. But the music videos elevate the performance. Especially like Imagine (John Lennon) music video. They have a big catalog of songs. Lots of Christmas songs. Side projects, solo projects, etc.

No, they did not record it on an iPad. Their early couch videos were done that way, which is where the lore comes from... but even though the video was recorded in Avi's kitchen it was done professionally by Fifgen Films. There's a behind the scenes writeup from Fifgen with photos of the setup on a lighting and photography blog still out in the world wide web.

A suggestion for you - even though it is not recent or live, is Scott and Mitch's side project, Superfruit, covering Katie Perry's song Rise. They are joined with 3 other singers, Brian Justin Crum, Mary Lambert and Mario Jose, it's an incredibly moving cover and a great showcase of their talent. Mitch is angelic in it. Also, if you can find it, Mitch did a cover of Billie Elish's song Power - not sure if it is still out there on YT, but it's stunning.

I would watch The Prayer prior though bc they show post production and you want to experience that first. The arrangement and vocals should have won a Grammy but they didn’t get it submitted in time. "Daft Punk" was their first Grammy winner. Okay, time for a bit of backstory. You know about the origin of Pentatonix, right? About how they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ (2011) with a first prize of $200,000 and a recording contract? Well, that recording contract was with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, who sponsored _The Sing-Off._ So immediately after winning the contract all the members of Pentatonix moved to California in preparation for recording their music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella music. But at this point Pentatonix was totally invested in staying together and making a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. They weren't about to give up just because some short-sighted recording executives said there was no future in their music. So they came up with Plan B. They pooled their winnings, using the $200,000 as seed money. They lived frugally. The men shared two apartments, to cut down on rent. They arranged music and rehearsed every day. And whenever they had a song ready they'd record it on their iPhones and post it to KZbin. It didn't take long for their fans from _The Sing-Off_ to find their channel and subscribe, and even then pentaholics were enthusiastic, so they spread the word around. And some of them became patrons. And Pentatonix started going viral. And someone at Sony sat up and took notice. "Hey, Pentatonix! Here at Sony we've concluded that Epic made a big mistake when they cancelled your contract. But we have another subsidiary, named Madison Gate. Would you be interested in a contract with them?" Darn right Pentatonix was interested! It wasn't a terribly good contract; Madison Gate specialized in movie soundtracks, so they couldn't provide Pentatonix with a recording studio, for instance. But they could and did get a company named FifGen Films to record videos for Pentatonix, and they published albums, and albums bring in money. It was a start. "Daft Punk Medley" was released on PTX Volume II, their second album, in 2013. And in 2014 it won them their first Grammy. And someone at Sony said, "Wait a minute! We got a Grammy from MADISON GATE?! Madison Gate publishes film soundtracks, not Grammy winners! What's going on here?" Eventually they figured it out, and they heard Scott's acceptance speech from the Grammys, where he said that the budget had been $400, much of which went for makeup and a single ring light, and that the audio had been recorded in a closet (it had good acoustics). Hmmm. Think what they could have done with a proper recording studio and a decent budget. "Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since. Okay, so "Daft Punk Medley" dates from 2013. Babytonix. The trio were all of 21 years old when they recorded it, and times were still tough. This video is from 2016, so two and a half or three years after the original video was shot, and around the same time as "Bohemian Rhapsody." Avi would leave them the next year. At some point you really should look at the official video of "Daft Punk Medle" even if you don't plan to post the reaction; FifGen got quite creative when their planned filming venue fell through at the last moment. The Grammy was in the category "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella," a category that did not exist before 2013. Previously it had simply been "Best Arrangement Instrumental." They had to change the category just so they could NOMINATE Pentatonix! And since Ben Bram and Pentatonix were both listed as the arrangers the Grammy was shared with Ben Bram.

For recent live performances, I suggest you check out the unmasked sing out video of them on The Masked Singer. They sing their faces off on a cover of Creep. It’s interesting because they used some instrumental backing tracks in their performances from the show, then they released Creep as a single. You might also enjoy their performance of their arrangement of the national anthem at a college football thingy. They also released a Scott lead called I Rise recently, and a Kirstie lead just a week or so ago, Please Santa Please. There are some good Aha live videos from this tour, but you can’t do Aha in 2023 without also experiencing Aha Singapore Star Vista 2016 which is a truly terrible fan video of an epic performance lead by Mitch that lives rent free in the PTX fandom hearts forever. Yes! There are actually 3 videos of Creep: the official album version, no video, the one on The Masked Singer in costume and the final unmasked version on The Masked Singer, which in my opinion is the best one. It's amazing to watch them without their masks just stun the audience with the realization that they just voted them off the show. @@throga Before watching ANY live performance of "Aha!", including the Star Vista performance, watch the official video. "Aha!" is a weird song; it feels scary, but doesn't really make sense. The official video provides a sort of story to make sense of the song, and they can't reproduce that live. Basically, there are three songs I can think of where Pentatonix's official video provides something important that isn't available in a live performance: "Bohemian Rhapsody," with all the Easter eggs it contains, "Imagine," which includes video effects that in themselves are the main reason their version is an upgrade rather than a cover, and "Aha!".

You guys have to listen to their Ariana grande medley! Their ability switch between tempos and leads at the drop of a hat while keeping it super tight and balanced really shines! Even if you aren’t the most familiar with Ari’s discography, if you understand music you will know where the songs change. There’s no live performance of this one, but I think it will be okay to react to since you guys pause pretty regularly anyway. Also, it may help that this was never an official release, just a KZbin video that they put up as a throwback to their roots. And I’m sure you’ve heard this a thousand times already, but the most iconic ptx vid (even more than hallelujah!) is their evolution of music. So I've heard that 3 of them have perfect pitch: Kevin, Mitch, and ?Scott or Kirstie? and the other 2 are really close. Also, they had also said that Kevin gets help with the beatboxing thru the beat/bass combo that he does with Avi or Matt. What you referenced with the "wind" in the beginning was actually Avi, not Kevin. And just like the lead where it changes people every section, every verse, or even after a phrase, Avi would bounce back and forth between singing bass and do beat effects seamlessly.

Aslo if you think hearing PTX on headset is required, if you can listen on a system with 5.1 or 7.2 souround sound system and you will be impressed with the extra bass from subwolfer and the highs from the true tweeter levels. Still live is mind blowing.

Thanks, this was a wonderful reaction and analysis! As others have said, the mini-doc Recording Evergreen should be really interesting for you two because it shows them working on a recent-ish Christmas album. And as she has said, it’s Kirstie, rhymes with THIRSTY. There is a video of their cover of Ride that was done live at a radio station, so it’s a good example of what they can do, anything from their Hollywood Bowl performance about a year ago is good and their cover of Gold is live but recorded at a studio. Personal favorites of min recently have been Come Along, Anchor and Havana. Also I Rise, a brand new stirring anthem that has only a visualizer at this point. Thanks for continuing with PTX! Peace …

For a somewhat more recent live, this recording of Love Me When I Don't from their original album The Lucky Ones is really good. This was recorded for the Kelly Clarkson show during the pandemic IIRC: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5OunHmko92ee80 If you can find a live version of Happy Now, that's another great song from the same album

I would suggest taking a look at the videos for individual songs from the Sept. 2022 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, so just a year old. Miles Reuben's channel has almost the entire concert available. Since it's a live performance, I don't think you'll have any trouble with copyright bots (at least I haven't heard any reactors mention problems), and you can pick out a song that you haven't heard before, or maybe one that you've seen the official video and listen to how they perform the same song live - there's really not much difference at all!

I would love to see and hear you react to some of Avi’s solo work. It is phenomenal! He writes as well as sings almost all of his songs. The first song he released in 2019 was Change on the Rise-a very powerful and great song. Two of my favorites, recorded while he was on tour in a little church in Belgium (I believe) for Seven Layers Music are All is Well and On My Way. The latter song is autobiographical, which makes it even more interesting. I look forward to seeing your reactions to his music. Oh, and yes, I did subscribe.

If you want some other examples of them live and on point check out their live performance of Hallelujah on thier 2010 Christmas special and their video cover of Kiara’s Gold. Also, check out their Evolution of Music and Evolution of Michael Jackson just two of their Evolution Of videos. They also have some great original music like Sing, Cracked, and Can’t Sleep Love to name a few. Their solo music is good as well. Kevin isn’t just a great beatboxer he can also sing and plays a mean cello. One of the reasons they are so in sinc is due to Scott, Mitch and Kirsty singing together for so long. They have known each other since high school. Their is a utube video out there that tells their story that is very interesting. Welcome to the club.

I understood where your comments were coming from in your first reaction. Given what digital post-production can do, it makes sense to wonder about what's, "real," in music. You were at a disadvantage, because you're unfamiliar with Pentatonix. For people who've been paying attention to Pentatonix for a while, it's a given that they can do their repertoire flawlessly live. I'm guessing you can't react to it on KZbin because it's a network show, but Pentatonix were formed in order to compete on, "The Sing-Off." Kirstin, Mitch & Scott grew up together, while Scott met Ben, their arranger, while in college. Scott convinced Mitch & Kirstin to audition for the show as a trio - later, he & Ben recruited Avi & Kevin to make a quintet. A lot of people saw how PTX works on their arrangements from the very beginning because of the show's format, in addition to the fact that they saw how PTX compared to other a cappella groups at the time, most of which were well-established. The judges & even their fellow competitors recognized early on that PTX were special. Having watched the show after the fact, I can say that from the first episode Pentatonix blew open the possibilities of what a vocal group can do. There are also the people, like me, who discovered Pentatonix through their KZbin channel after the show. Like the first group, we've seen Pentatonix do this without digital processing time & time again in their one shot videos. Re: pitch - they've said in the past that they usually rely on Mitch's ear to set the correct pitch for the group.

There are so, so so many good originals & covers by them, it's hard to narrow down recommendations! It's not recent, but since it's about to be the Christmas season, when you check out Christmas stuff by them a must-see is their video of them doing Silent Night off mic in a church! It totally changed a song I already loved & now theirs is the only version I play! I have never heard anyone else do what they did with it. ❤

For the record, this live performance is exactly what you will hear in the official video as Pentatnoix refuses to do anything in their recording that they cannot reproduce live. So there is no amplification or reverb used that does not come from them. And you ought to see Mitch Grassi doing the guitar-riffs from "Bohemian Rhapsody" live.

I love this video. If you account for the terrible acoustics of the room and the quality of the cell phone mic, it becomes obvious just how much of their sound is down to just their skill, as opposed to the skills of their (admittedly very good) sound engineer.

Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were all in high school choir together at the same time. (Can you just imagine that?) They had been singing together for years before they brought in Avi and Kevin to compete on The Sing Off. That experience with each other allows them to mix together pretty flawlessly. Their arranging skills are just off the charts good. They do have help from Ben Bram who has been arranging with them since The Sing Off. Ben Bram was the producer of this and won the Grammy with Pentatonix. Ben Bram was the one who talked Scott into starting Pentatonix and going on The Sing Off. Ben is thought of as the sixth member of the group.

Really enjoying your reactions. Love the approach and the info you provide. I've listened to many reactions of this and PTX other songs and you all point out things no one else has. Very informative. Clearly you all know your stuff. Keep it up. And yeah, PTX is that good. You definitely need to check out their Grammy winning video of this even if you can't get it posted. Most hear that first, doubt it can be done live, and then listen to this backstage version. Incredible how close this is to their produced version.
