Yup. A set of plug wires for my 600 (it's an early M120, pre-COP, still has the cam driven distributors) is like $500 from the dealer and there's a core charge because MB wants them back. No joke. A car that cost as much as a house to buy costs as much as a house to fix. This is why I tell people that they need to buy a car because they love the car. Doesn't matter what it is, at some point, it's going to cost you money. Could be a Corolla, it'll still want tires and oil changes and brakes. Loving the car at least makes spending that money hurt less.

Serviced German cars professionally for years. Own a W140 600. Both of these are excellent cars, but the 600 is worlds better than the 750. It's been largely forgotten to time now but the 750 cost about what a V8 S-class did, it was about 50% cheaper than the 600. They have quite a bit less horsepower and they're not built nearly as well as the Mercedes. They are, however, a good deal lighter and a better driver's car, to the extent that anything in this class is a driver's car.
@peterhammer69156 сағат бұрын
Merc prices have always been ridiculous. And the cars mostly look ugly. The EQ-series from C upwards probably gets the trophy for the ugliest cars ever manufactured.
@martinsvensson68845 сағат бұрын
@@peterhammer6915 From making the best looking ones back then.
@siorusbzns6545 сағат бұрын
@@peterhammer6915 The EQs are ugly, I agree. They're less-ugly in person, but still ugly. With respect to being overpriced, historically, up to and including the W202/210/140/R129 era, Mercedes cost what they did for good reason. From roughly 1960-2003, Mercedes built unquestionably the best cars on the planet, and by a very, very large margin. You could buy sportier cars than a Merc of that era, or faster cars, or more fuel-efficient cars. You might even be able to get a more reliable car--the RWD Volvos are at least on par with Mercedes, possibly better, although not much else belongs in that conversation--but you will not find any one car from that era that makes as few compromises as a Mercedes. A better driver's car--say, an E28 versus a W123--is not built as well. A Volvo 240 might be more reliable and is certainly cheaper to fix but does not drive as well. So on and so forth. There was about a 45 year period where Mercedes built cars to make the fewest compromises possible, and they did it at a level that perhaps no other company besides Duesenberg ever managed. I have a Mercedes ad from a magazine circa about 1965 here waiting for me to frame it; it's a picture of a transmission on a transmission dynamometer, and the caption talks about how Mercedes dyno tests every single transmission they make to like 200mph road speed, even though at the time none of their cars could hit more than about 125. That kind of engineering and FOS is what you paid for, and those cars were absolutely not overpriced. That kind of engineering is why the 190E set speed and endurance records that stood for decades. The "overpriced" argument is the refuge of people who just don't understand the ethos of Mercs from that era. The later cars, the W211, W220, W203, so on, there was a meaningful drop in quality, the absolute nadir of which was about 2005-2010. They've improved since then, but they're still not what they were. Buyers' tastes and expectations changed. Nobody buys these cars and holds onto them for 25 years anymore; they're leased, then CPO'd, then scrapped. If they make it to 150k without completely falling apart, job done. In some respects they're still better cars than what the rest of the industry is doing; Mercedes still knows how to tune an engine (current C63 notwithstanding), they haven't completely forgotten/cost cut interior economics (although they've tried), and they still drive mostly like a Mercedes should. But they're not what they were. Stuff like the 500E and that 600 are long gone. The closest you can get in 2024 to that "engineering above all else" philosophy is probably a Lucid, a Land Cruiser, or a GT3.
@purwantiallan50895 сағат бұрын
W140 600 also very reliable.
@siorusbzns6545 сағат бұрын
@@peterhammer6915 I had a longer reply to this that has disappeared into the mod queue, hopefully to turn up at some point. In any case, I agree the EQ is ugly. With respect to pricing, at one time, Mercedes built cars to make the fewest compromises possible, and they did it at a level that perhaps no other company besides Duesenberg ever managed. That ended with the R129, W140, W202, and W210; the absolute nadir of MB quality was about 2005-2010, and it never has recovered completely, nor will it ever. But the cars from the '60s-90s? They were by far and away the most comprehensively well-engineered cars anyone has ever built. Plenty of other companies have made outstanding cars; BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Jaguar, so on. But none of them did or could do what Mercedes did in that era. Not even close. You got what you paid for.

I bought a very used, highly depreciated Hyundai Equus, and it is marvelous! I've always wanted a VIP done up Full sized Mercedes or 7 series BMW. There is something about driving around a huge slab of luxury metal that you don't mind parking at the mall.

I've always LOVED that generation of the 7 Series and Thomas' 750 looks killer lowered on those Alpina wheels! Man, it really sucks the camera fear was stolen. I hate crooks. I'm definitely looking forward to the next episode!

This is by far these best video I've watched on KZbin ever. From the food to the cars to the troubles. Amazing. Sucks they kept getting robbed though.

I appreciate this type of videos more than with the new cars. Somehow these old cars are just more interesting.
