Through the Portlight We bought a 1976 Alden - Wellington 47. Yes, it is very exciting, I'm like a kid waiting on Christmas. We are the 4th owners and she has been very well taken care of until the previous owner got sick. They held on to her for about three years hoping he would get better, but finally decide it was time to let go, so she has been neglected for the last few years. There is not any damage to the boat, but she needs a lot of TLC.

Hello again from Oregon! Great camera work. Better walk through than most. Very easy to see and you featured a lot of details that are often not shown. My wife and I are five years (roughly) from living aboard. Right now, just lake sailing and saving. We really appreciate all the info you two, Curtis and others have offered on the Westsail. Very helpful. Good thoughts your way... Cheers...

yetiwookie1 Thank you! We were originally going to shoot the boat tour as one video, but because we went into a little more detail, it ended up being two. We are glad you enjoyed it! Are you thinking of living aboard La Dolce Vita? What kind of boat is it? It's beautiful!
@yetiwookie19 жыл бұрын
Through the Portlight It's a 23' Venture Newport. Had to do a full resto on her inside and out, which has taught us a lot about what to be prepared for in the future with a larger vessel. Lot of fun to sail and camp in, but too small to live on. We've narrowed our search to a Westsail 42 center cockpit. More expensive, but offers everything we need and want. We are determined and motivated to make this happen. Your videos help a great deal. Thanks again.

Angela and James, thank you so much for sharing a bit about yourselves and your aspirations. I had the opportunity to sail with some Canadian friends out of Brockville, Ontario last (very short) summer on the St. Lawrence and have been bitten by the sailing bug ever since. I have been living vicariously though you, Sail Life (Mads) and Life Is Like Sailing (Alfy). Please keep up the your nice work and think of us when we get our first ice (any day now).
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
damtim Thanks for watching! We know Brockville (and the St. Lawrence) quite well! Many good memories there; we won't be missing the cold weather though ;) Whereabouts do you live?
@damtim9 жыл бұрын
Through the Portlight I live on the Americanside of the St. Lawrence River in Potsdam, NY. I thoroughly enjoy the St. Lawrence having been on it from Kingston/Cape Vincent to Gaspe, Quebec (though I have not boated it all). My only complaint is the short boating season. After watching your videos along with Alfy’s, I can easily see why you have made the move to the west coast. Your area reminds me of the geology of the 1000 Islands! Again, thank you for sharing your stories. I am looking forward to your next installment already. Do you recall the group/organizations that you took your classes from?
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
damtim Yes, the Gulf Islands remind us of the Thousand Islands very much - only it's tidal and salty here :) I (James) took a few courses in Toronto back in 2004, at Humber Sailing & Powerboating Centre (Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate, VHF, Coastal Navigation). Then in 2007, I enrolled in several courses at Holland College in Summerside, PEI. They were for Transport Canada certificates (MEDA1, MEDB1, MEDB2, Marine Advanced First Aid, ROC-MC radio course, and the Bridgewatch Rating Certificate). I ended up working aboard the Canadian Empress (where I met Angela), which sailed round-trips between Kingston - Quebec and Kingston - Ottawa. We love the St. Lawrence Seaway and hope to one day sail our Westsail up the river! :)

Hi guys, Thanks for a great boat tour! Looking forward to the next part. It would be great if you could include some measurements of head room in the various parts of the boat, and if possible also the dimensions of your current v-birth and settee. Good luck with your continuous work on your beautiful home.
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
Leif Pettersson Hi Leif! Thanks for your comment. We have just measured the headroom for several areas of the vessel for you. Note: we have added insulation and cedar planks to the deck head, totalling about 2.5cm (1"), so here are the actual measurements: Under the sliding companionway hatch: 203cm (80") In the salon: 185-189cm (73-74.5") Head: 177cm (70") Right before the v-berth: 181cm (71.5") The dinette becomes a settee that measures about 190cm x 98cm (75" x 38.5") The v-berth is triangular and measures roughly 244cm wide x 190cm (96" wide x 75") The space between the mattress and the deck head in the v-berth is 65cm (25.5") at the lowest, and 91cm (36") at the highest We hope this helps!

@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
s/v Natalie B Hello Chip! Thanks for the comment! We are happy with our AirHead decision, although there are a few complaints about it, which we will go over in a detailed video about the Air Head. Overall, however, the positives outweigh the negatives for us. We got rid of a horrible odour (even after emptying the old holding tank). It seemed like the smell was permeating through all the hoses. Also, we don't like the idea of carting around so much sewage, especially right under our bed! :P

Very nice. It looks quite comfortable inside. A thought: have you considered putting a shelf in your "pantry"? From what we could see on the video, it looks like quite a tall locker, with some wasted space in the upper part that didn't seem to be used. Just my $0.02.

@goofy4birds2 ай бұрын
I was wondering why your WS looked more like the new Ikea look instead of the teak mahogany look. As you can tell I love all the teak an mahogany. They can't make them like this anymore due to cost/lake of getting the wood. They also loose value when you paint over the teak and mahogany. Teak is an oily wood and really needs to breath to keep from rotting. I just oil mine with teak oil every so often.

@chucklanham19 жыл бұрын
As a soon to be single mattress (as opposed to three piece), how do you access the storage below?
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
Chuck Lanham We are hoping to make access to the storage underneath the v-berth more accessible from the aft (the entrance to the v-beth). Having 8" of latex is really comfortable, but super heavy and awkward to lift, so even if it was in three smaller pieces, it would still be quite a hassle to lift and hold out of the way. These are not the typical lightweight 3" or 4" boat cushions :)
@chucklanham19 жыл бұрын
Through the Portlight Hinging the fore and putting in a hydraulic lift would work if it isn't cost prohibitive. Here is an RV one. I am not sure how it would hold up in the a sailing environment. www.hatchlift.com/bedlift-kits
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
Chuck Lanham Hi Chuck! The lifts are something we haven't thought about. It's always good to get some different ideas! :) We are planning to drop the v-berth even lower, and any storage space would be lessened further. Not sure if it would be worth installing the lift system, but we will look into it. Thanks!

This is what I did for draining the shower pan. satorisails.com/?p=352 I am one of the few that has a fully functioning shower on a Westsail 32. Just need a couple of debris traps to keep the pump from clogging. Not a big deal. Takes a couple of minutes every few months to clean the screens. Also nice to have it pass a vented loop for using the drain while heeled over under-weigh.
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
SV Satori Thanks for the link and the info on how you plumbed your shower drain into the same thru-hull as the sink drain. Great idea and no need for a sump. We will definitely think about that system if we ever decide to install a shower.

If you haven't been told yet,, don't tow your go-a-shore like that. Those tow rings have been known to break . Could never figure out why people think that glass on a boat is a good thing. (Your on deck and need to go below for something and step on broken glassin your bare feet ,200 miles from shore)
@ThroughthePortlight9 жыл бұрын
Mazda rx7 Thanks for the tip, but as difficult as it may be to tell from the clip, we have a bridle attached to the two D-rings and then through the front handle. As for the glass, we do not plan on going offshore with our glassware, but we will put your two cents worth towards some new Strahl beverageware. :)
