It really makes you wonder what they do with the used snitches, like, is there just a big bucket full of them somewhere in the castle? Or did Dumbledore hear that Harry swallowed the snitch and then go and immediately retrieve it thinking "Oh boy, I gotta make sure I keep this thing safe in case I ever need to deliver something to Harry in the weirdest way possible."

As far as the Quidditch points go, it would seem to me that they do receive the points outright from the final score, because when Harry, Hermione, and Neville lose 150 points together, it is acknowledged that this would set them back all that they had gained from Quidditch.

As far as Dumbledore’s horcrux awareness though; I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that when the diary was exposed, he already knew (or at least suspected) that form of magic. I think what the diary told him however, (by it not being guarded/treated more carefully by Lucius, and him almost casually slipping it to Ginny,) was that there were likely more than one.

As for the clunky parts...JK Rowling is such a master storyteller it's easy to forget this was her FIRST BOOK. Most first books never get out of the box under the bed let alone get published. You have pointed out multiple times there are things in this book that foreshadow happenings in books that won't be written for years. As a writer myself, I find this an incredible feat!

What I like to think about the "Greek chappie" that sold Fluffy to Hagrid is that it's actually Hades himself in disguise. The Fantastic Beasts book references the Greek demigod hero Bellerophon (Who is a son of Poseidon) being the only one to successfully defeat the Chimera, so who knows, maybe the Greek gods do exist in some way in the HP universe.

I got very excited when you said a few weeks ago that you were going to start this podcast. I wanted to re-read the Harry Potter books anyway and now it's the perfect opportunity to read each chapter again to prepare for the next podcast episode! :D As someone who became a Harry Potter fan meinly because I wanted to see the trio grow up together, I re-read this chapter last week with particular interest in how the beginning friendship of the three was described here. It seems to me that Hermione has been fully integrated into the boys' friendship instantly after defeating the troll together. Actually I have a kind of head canon which takes place directly following the events of the previous chapter "Halloween", when the three say "Thank you" to each other and get plates for the meal. Here's how chapter "Halloween" ends in my head canon (instead of the last two sentences "But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some thing you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a three-foot mountain troll is one of them."): Having filled their plates overly with beans, meat, potatoes and sweets, Harry and Ron sat down in the common room but, in silent agreement, left a free seat between them. None of the two started to eat, but they watched Hermione, who slowly filled her plate as well and then, with a small sigh, headed for a free seat in the corner. Harry looked at Ron who nodded, and both of them shouted simultaneousely. "Hermione! HERMIONE!" Hermione looked up surprised, as if she wasn't used to hear her name from someone other than a teacher in such a loud and friendly voice. When she saw the boys smiling and waving at her and pointing at the free seat between them, she looked as if she would burst into tears. She ran towards them, accidently knocking Lavender over and pouring her potatoes on Neville, and when she sat down between Harry and Ron, she looked like the happiest eleven-year-old girl in the world, because she knew she had found something that no rule, teacher or book in the world could ever give her.

I could be wrong since I don't know if it's mentioned that the door locked behind the trio (and Neville) when they escaped from Fluffy, but what if they're the reason Snape got bit! If I'm not wrong and it's not mentioned that the door locked after they closed it, (which I find unlikely since they needed a spell to unlock it so I think it needed a spell to be locked again) what if they didn't realize it wasn't locked after shutting the door, and left it like that. Fluffy isn't getting through the door and as far as the teachers know, no one has been inside so they assume its still locked. Soooo, when Snape rushed to the door to see if Quirrell made it into the room he checked the door, found it unlocked and rushed in fearing Quirrell had in fact unlocked it and was making his way through the trapdoor only to get bit by Fluffy, but seeing the trapdoor and Fluffy were undisturbed, left, or maybe he and the rest of the teachers caught wind that the troll was in the bathroom and fled. What do you guys think??

In "Order of the Phoenix," after Ron gets his new Cleansweep Eleven, Malfoy asks derisively, who would put a charm on that? He is more specific in the actual quote. My understanding from that and descriptions of the Firebolt and the Nimbus series with their special features, is that charms are used. This is reinforced by the fact that it is Flitwick who checks the Firebolt for jinxes. Does this preclude a broom having a core like a wand? No, not definitively, but if brooms have a core like a wand, why doesn't the broom choose the wizard? If JKR had a broom core in mind, I would expect at least some specific attention drawn to the similarity between brooms and wands in how well they work for the user. Both of Harry's brooms are bought for him. He never has a chance to try one out before it is bought for him and yet both work excellently for him from the outset.

The bluebell flames thing that they were worried about getting in trouble for, I always interpreted that as it being a spell that Hermione created, rather than something she learned from a book or soemthing. It is her signature, and we never see anybody else cast it (except for a semi-canonical appearance in one of the video games), and the way they proudly talk about it makes it seem unique. The way magic is regulated I imagine that creating your own spells is frowned upon, although it of course has been known to happen as we later see with Levicorpus and Sectumsempra, so that would certainly explain why they were worried about getting in trouble if a teacher saw her doing it.

Yes, the broomstick defrosting is ??? I noticed the description: "lake like chilled steel." Hermione's blue flames in a jar is becoming characteristic as a skill like later Harry's use of Expelliarmus spell becomes his signature spell. Harry's conversations with Ron and Hermione about what Snape could be up to is the beginning of them being detectives, which fake Moody mentions in GoF if I remember correctly (book not in hand). Harry trying to empty his mind the night before the game preps the reader for same in OaP. Seamus putting ketchup on sausages--ick, LOL. (I've been to England and the sausages taste good but have a softer texture than the ones here and to me the taste doesn't make up for the texture). I wonder why the Quidditch match referees aren't Hogsmeade residents instead of students? I read this chapter last Sunday and my notes are from then :).

In regards to the points system, in Book 2 chapter 11, Wood says that winning the game earns Griffyndor 50 points. I think Harry and Ron have seer skills because of how many of their predictions came true when they did the hw for Trelawney. I also think Dumbledore is a legilimens (or has the skills) and has a time Turner. It would explain how he’s constantly aware of what’s going on and how he understands Hermione’s time turner so well. I think he regularly reads people’s minds but can’t tell anyone, otherwise he’d lose his advantage. I think that’s why he knew Hagrid was innocent but didn’t/couldn’t prevent him from being expelled. If he told people how he knew, he’d lose a major advantage.

50:08 but Dumbledore doesn't completely stay out of the Harry vs Voldy fight - he actively goes looking for horcruxes and destroys the one in the ring. He's happy for Harry to have a go at piecing the puzzle together, but that doesn't mean he won't have a crack at Voldemort himself if the opportunity arises, like in the Dept of Mysteries.

I think sometimes JKR includes some details out of whims instead of logic. And i love her for that. Becase it's a magical world with set rules but as such, it's all in all fantasy so anything can be allowed or excused by thinking "welp, it's just magic and anything can happen". For example, i think Snape, although quite talented with potions and spell creation, he's not a healer, so maybe he didn't find any efficient potion he could fashion himself to cure the wound of a magical creature. However and hear me out; the fact that he went to the squib specially to 'mend' his wound was a way to have him tell Snape any suspicious activities he'd see at night, example, Quirrell's shenanigans in the middle of the night; so Snape discovered the suspect trying to get a hold of the Stone. But Filtch was of not use in such regards, unfortunately.

Snape may be one of my favorite characters but it is my unbiased opinion that he is a complete badass. That's pretty much canon 😂 I highly doubt he _wouldn't_ have been able to heal his leg. He made Sectumsempra and the spell to heal those wounds. I like the theory that there's something in Fluffy's saliva that prevents magical healing. I also like to think he totally knew his robes were on fire, but his number one priority was making sure Harry was safe

Part of how I answered Dumbledore not directly confronting Quirell\ Voldemort is because of how little he knows. If all he has is the prophecy then I reckon he's more interested in trying to draw Voldemort out so that he ends up revealing some of his plans, and specifically how he never died\ came back, and he's comfortable enough in his own abilities that should he need to, he'd step in and deal with Voldy directly.

The three headed dog reference could also elude to the three horcruxes of Voldemort (Voldemort prime being kept alive by Quirrel, Harry and the tiara) in Hogwarts at that time. These also represent the three big issues of Snape's life: Voldemort, his hatred of James, and his desire to be the DADA professor but can't because Dumbledore can't lose him (this is assuming that the tiara is the holding place for the curse on the DADA position).

What he was doing, what he knew, and what he might have been plotting at the time, during the major events of the series

They have a similar to what you're asking for, but not exactly, video called Dumbledore's Big Plan if you haven't seen it yet! They did a part for each book, but have all 7 parts in one video too. It's specifically about what he may have been plotting and trying to teach Harry during the events in each of the 7 books. If you haven't seen it yet, it's a great watch!

My head canon for snapes leg is that magical creatures have magical bites that can't always be fixed with magic. Otherwise fluffy is just a big dog, and that's not really dangerous to wizards.

About the Broomsticks. Someone in the books jeers "who would put a flying charm on a twig like that" (paraphrase) so I assume it is a spell and not a core. That being said I like the core idea wayyyyy more.

About the flying brooms, you are forgetting that when Sirius gifted Harry his broom, the teachers dismounted it, explaining that they removed the enchantments it had on it to see if it had a trap enchantment. Which means that the broom has no particular flying capability, it is enchanted to fly. Similarly we have Sirius's motorcycle which again, was enchanted to fly and further enchanted to fight for the Battle of the 7 Potters. Also, Arthur Weasley has troubles with someone from middle east that was trying to sell flying carpets as a "family vehicle". Is safe to assume that those are also enchanted.

As for a quidditch point system from the very begining. It is possible I think to have that situation without entangling this points to house points. I know that canon numbers reflect game scores, but just bare with idea alone: Imagine that house gets 3 points for a win and loses 1 otherwise. If there was 2 plays before: S+R (S wins) and R+H (R wins), we would have situation when G did not play yet, S is first with 6 points, R is second with 2, G is third with 0 and H is last with -1. If in match we read G+S G would win, they would be now second in ranking with 3 points behind S with 5. I think it solves the situation quite well. G would win the cup if also wins against both H and R ;)

As far as the quidditch championship and the house cup points. They say in a later book that they get I think it’s 50 points for winning at quidditch. Then they never say an amount but if you win the quidditch cup you get so many points toward the house cup so it does sound like whoever wins quidditch cup usually wins the house cup. So even if they were behind Slytherin and earned a 50 point win, that doesn’t mean that was enough to overtake Slytherin.

The Weasleys are pure blood. So, they're "poor" the way a lot of the English landed gentry are "poor": they may not have as much money now, but their family did have quite a lot, at one time, so they do have a lot of pretty expensive heirlooms to hand out to their kids. Even more reason not to be wearing the wristwatch to play Quitich, though.

I feel like for the house cup, Ravenclaw is probably always in the lead at the beginning of the year for academic reasons then the other houses move ahead for Quidditch and other stuff.

What if petunia had a crush on Snape when they were younger and the real reason petunia was so jealous of Lilly is not only was snape was her crush and her sisters best friend and that Lilly got to spend more time with Snape than petunia did how would this change the story if petunia had a crush on Snape and knowing later on that her taking care of Harry would allow her to possibly see Snape and had Dumbledore known this from the start of petunias feelings how would he use it in his big plan

I like to think that brooms are like sports equipment in college or at the rec center, they can be checked out if you don’t have your own. Maybe the brooms on the field are for students who play quidditch but don’t have brooms of their own.

they could totally move to second place after slytherin after defeating slytherin, as in english football you get points for winning matches in a tournament table, and similarly those points can move you over teams with less teams even if you have defeated the top team

I do think Harry displays some seer blood. Like his 3rd year divination exam, he better have got and O in that, he exactly described what was going to happen. He thought he was making it up but he was spot on, and only seconds later the prophecy for voldemorts return happened, which kind of overshadowed it. There's a few other times harrys intuition is just too on point when it's not to do with voldemort too. You could call it poor writing or plot convenience or you can accept all purebloods are related so chances are harrys related to a seer somewhere along the line
