This is a piece of Maple that most turners dispose of. It's not always smart to leave this piece of pith in a turning meant to be a finished piece. Pith cracks, that's just nature. But, maybe the pith is worth saving on it's own?
Finished in shellac.

Hi Phil, I am with you on keeping the textured top surface; it shows a lovely contrast against the smooth finish in the bowl and on the underside. I am currently enjoying making some bowls/ platters/ dishes in what I like to think of as my 'inspired by Phil' style, trying to leave as much Nature as I can. It's fun!

‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ I wouldn’t call it ‘throw away wood’ just because someone else doesn’t grasp the value of Life. It’s a very pretty bowl. I could see that in a home’s entrance as a place to put keys. Or it could be used in an office to place one’s business cards. It has lots of applications. 👍🏻✌🏻

Phil, Challenge met and successfully conquered. It was my chainsaw that left those marks when I cut the thick pith slice out of the log. Usually I cut a pith slice in two along the pith, but this one was too pretty to turn into waste wood. Since the pith was actually pretty tight and solid, I figured you might enjoy playing with it. Well done!

Mr Phil, I can't imagine how anybody would have a single complaint about your work. I've yet to see one of your masterpieces that I do not like. This particular piece is just full of originality and I love it. The best feature, in my opinion, is the one feature I don't think I've seen you put on a piece until now; that textured top. That texture on the top makes the whole piece. Along with the live edge, it simply adds to the character of the piece as a whole. I love your vision on this piece and pretty much every piece of art you turn out. It's truly amazing.

I just finished watching your video on the small piece of Oak that Tuffy sent you and you turned a Beautiful bowl. Small things when you do it, turns out with results no one thought possible. A very stunning piece again from the Master. Tuffy & Valery knows how to challenge you with the things they send you. As i said I throw very little wood away. At this time I turn a lot of smaller items, this allows me to incorporate a lot more of my creative nature into my projects. KEEP ON TURNING

I stumbled across this in my recommended page, and I'm sure as hell glad I did. My dad used to turn wood amongst other woodworking projects, and I used to love just watching him. So thankyou for this video, I was hooked from start to finish. You have my subscription mate. Thankyou!

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Again, and again you amaze us with your vision about any given piece. I thought for certain that it was going to split. I have learned so much from you and we all look forward to your next art piece.

As always my friend you can be one of the best teachers in how you do what you do. Your contribution to showing how, and why, you are using your tools. The process and the way you use them is always a safety lesson for anyone who listens.🔥 Happy turning my friend ☺️ working on another piece of Black Walnut on the east side of the country. ✌️

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I'm eventually going to try to get you and Gary both a piece of Butternut to try out. It's nickname is called the White Walnut and it's pretty hard to find due to it's rarity. The reason why I'm going to send you both a piece is because you guys are the ones that got me wanting to turn and it's given me a purpose. I've always wanted to do things with wood ever since I was a kid I took wood shop, but I knew that I could never afford a shop. Now I'm loving what I do and I love selling my work. It's given me a reason to keep going every day. So like I said to Gary a few weeks back. Thank you for sharing what you do because if it weren't for those videos I would be in a different place. Just thought I'd give you a little back round on me. Happy turning my friend ☺️

@@edwardhand7070 I'd be in the same boat without my lathe and channel, Edward. I have family that loves me but it's my audience that I talk to every day. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning!

Thanks, Phil! I enjoy and learn when you explain which side you will use for the top and bottom. Ithelps me to see what it will look like when it is finished. Or what we want it to look like. Thank you.

I was yelling round over the bowl edge. I’m with you Phil it looks like the piece was split with an ax as it has a really cool ripple look to the top. Then you showed the finished top I could really see the ripples. It is a beautiful candy dish for sure. Thanks for the show. Joel
