Thank you for posting. I think eliminating compulsory routines was really a huge mistake. There is something to be said for comparing everyone on the same basic skills. Striving for perfection really shows what a gymnast can do under pressure. Those routines can be harder than they look!

It's such a shame about compulsories for the Chinese team. Most of their routines were super smooth and solid but then they all just had a few big errors. Really wish we'd been able to see kui yuan yuan in the balance beam finals!

oh my... It's been 26 years that I watch the chinese compulsory Blance beam routines. China/ Russia were same subdivision ( maybe 4) at 96 OG compulsory Team and chinese starts from Balance Beam.... The TV showed from Chinese fx routines so it doesn't exsit chinese compulsory BB routines in my video tapes. .If Kui didn't make mistake she can be podium . And she should have won the Gold at 97 worlds.

The 1996 Chinese WAG team was prolly their craziest ever, 2 Mo saltos, Liu Xuan's one arm into release, Kui Yuanyuan's beam etc, and also their best AAer (Mo). Not to mention the incredible mix of choreography, skills, artistry, and routines, such creativity that we won't see until FIG get their one braincell back. Even Shannon Miller was beautiful to watch. The WAG of these two quads are unwatchable.

These Chinese gymnasts were STELLAR but the judging was notoriously pro-American, which meant the nuances and exquisite form of the Chinese were ignored, but the magnifying glasses were taken out for every minor flaw. Meanwhile, the Americans performed “solid”, but unspectacular, routines with clear form breaks that were ignored. The compulsory scores for 99% of the Americans clearly reflected home field advantage to appease the raucous crowds.
@dannymorales71432 жыл бұрын
I’m not even sure there was a US judge for compulsory beam in the mix lol. Regardless, no one could touch China on style, but they all had very visible errors that usually resulted in at least 0.1 for the balance check and a simultaneous 0.1-0.3 for rhythm breaks. Besides, China’s first couple scores are deservedly higher than the Americans.
@gaelgarciabernal24342 жыл бұрын
@@dannymorales7143 I stand firmly by my observation. The US didn't deserve the team gold and the questionable judging was a source of low morale for a lot of non-American gymnasts, even before the start of optionals and the Bela Karolyi and Kerri Strug fake circus act. The deduction for flaws and rhythm breaks is fact but they always enforce it with the exquisite performers, like the Chinese. The Americans seemed to be rewarded for simply staying on the apparatus and the judges ignored amplitude, toe point and flexibility.
@PeirsolFan22 жыл бұрын
@@gaelgarciabernal2434 - sorry but the fact that the Chinese got the scores they did with the errors they made shows that the judges would have rewarded them well if they had hit. Qiao Ya getting a 9.3 for those mistakes vs. a conservative Strug getting a 9.3 doesn't seem off. I have no doubt that Mo would have matched - if not beaten, Miller, Moceanu, and Podkopayeva without that error on the cartwheel.
@buddyboy13092 жыл бұрын
The Americans were the only ones to hold the leg up after the cartwheel and China did the fouetté the best. The rest I’d say was equal and you can’t deny the deductions for the semi major wobbles and rhythm breaks.
@dannymorales71432 жыл бұрын
@@gaelgarciabernal2434 Genuinely curious who you think should have won based on the actual performances? The other teams gave it away, the US won pretty handily and fairly IMO. China probably had the best group of athletes but didn't deliver, and Romania got more gifts than anyone, especially on compulsory bars. Russia had a fall or near fall on every event in optionals.

I think the mistake on the first element (form break on the mount) soured the judges' eyes a bit. The rest of the routine was great. For what it's worth, I think she ended up as one of the reserves for the beam final with a 9.7-ish score for her optional exercise, which shows how difficult it was to get a great score on compulsory beam that year.
