Throwing arrows are an incredibly fun and easy to make projectile. At their simplest, they consist of a notched shaft, fletchings and a counter weight. With the aid of a length of string, these arrows can be thrown great distances. On a calm day I threw an arrow from one end of a football field to the other. With a tailwind they can go as far as 150 yards.
These arrows can be made from any long and straight material. Dowels, tree branches, bamboo, repurposed arrows and even broom sticks will work. Arrowheads, field points, and lock nuts can all be used as counterweights. The fletchings can be as simple as duct tape and cardboard. Feathers and arrow vanes work great too!
To throw the arrows, put the knotted end of the string in the notch of the shaft. Wrap it around once, over the knot. Pull the string to the front of the arrow winding it around the shaft once. Wrap the excess string around your hand. Hold the arrow like a dart. Check to make sure the string is taut and you are ready to go!
With about a dollar's worth of materials from the hardware store you too can be throwing these arrows in under ten minutes.
