Today I revisit a shape I used to live making and I haven’t made in a couple years. This was so much fun and I’m excited to make more.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the video Matt... watched this 4 times. This is one of the tricker ones. Once I get at about 14" I have trouble getting the clay up, or it buckles or I get thin spots. Super fun.

Awesome throwing there Matt, such control and steadiness throughout. That second one sure gave you much less problems than the first, you always seem to be able to get around those problems though :) I want one ;) Keep me updated please. Regards and safety for you and your family.

The old flowerpot makers in the UK often did a left hand knuckling in for the first pull on the 12 or 16 or 24 pounders using the heal of the left hand . George Curtis at Littlethorpe Pottery used to say "Let the wheel do the work " :) . Are you near my old friend David Stuempfle ? Great throwing . there Matt

I love how you show how high you get with 6 pounds of clay, I really like that idea because it’s efficient. If I may ask, how wide are they and how thick do you make the walls. I’m trying to do a unique bottle type but I think my first one was way to skinny, and didn’t work out, (but hey that’s why we keep at it.

I've started throwing bottles and the taller they get the less clue I have how to trim the base? I've shaped them upside down on a coffee mug but that doesn't work when they're bigger
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t do much trimming or altering to the base. When I have done that I throw a taller chuck to set the bottles in for trimming
@triciac1019
@triciac1019 Жыл бұрын
Soak the chuck in water so when you hold it in place with blobs of clay the clay sticks to the chuck and you bottle.

Hey Mr. Kelly, I find inspiration in your videos and other pottery videos here on KZbin. After Watching pottery videos and wanting to do pottery for years and years, I signed up for a 4 week class today. It's very exciting and also a bit scary to learn something I've never done before, but your bloopers at the end of this video shows the kind of trouble you go through to share your knowledge here and that believe it or not gives me hope to step into an unfamiliar area and learn along the way. Keep inspiring many people and I wish you and your family best wishes :) thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing. I've been struggling with making a taller shape. I keep losing it about mid-way. Also, sometimes I struggle to understand how tall I should be attempting with a certain amount of clay. Is there a rule of thumb? Thanks again for a great video.
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 4 жыл бұрын
No rule of thumb on that as far as I’m concerned. We are all at different skill levels for throwing. Cutting a cylinder in half after you’ve pulled all you can is a good idea to see where you are pulling too thin and/or not enough. Also wall thickness of the cylinder usually depends on how you plan to shape the piece.

It’s especially sad that politics and money has superseded our ability to focus on the necessary steps to totally destroy this virus. We have the resources and knowledge now to do so but still politics and financial interests I fear are keeping us from doing the right things.
